v i i I v I J f I f r ERA WED OCTOBER 1967 VOL 116 NO Bi The Robarta Government will be reelected on Oct 17 and York Norths Progressive Conservative candidate Bill Hodgson should be elected with them York North has three excellent candidates but Mr Hodgson is the best of the three Tom Taylor the Liberal candidate is a young man with great industry He would make a good representative in Queens Park for York North were it not for him being a member of a disorganized party which is unable to field enough qualified candidates to form an effective government Baker the candidate is a sincere hardworking man whose roots go deep in York County Unfortunately his party leader has made some strange socialistic pronouncements These have hurt Mr Bakers chances and indeed the chances of many other NDP candidates Bill Hodgson the Progressive Conservative candidate is a man of wide experience in local government He has been warden of York County reeve of King Township a representative for his municipality on conservation authorities active in farm organizations and hospital and welfare boards Because of his experience and obvious interest in the affairs of York North Mr Hodgson is the best candidate to represent this riding He will undoubtedly make an excellent member of the Government in Queens Park Eliminate Doubt East Gwillimbury Township Council and York County Council have at long accomplished something concrete to bring the Brown Camps Ltd to a head With its unanimous acceptance of a resolution asking for powers to license and investigate these places council has started the ball rolling to awaken the Ontario Government up to the fact that there are many questions needing answers regarding the financing and operation of these camps There is too much grey matter in between facts and rumor in this operation to satisfy the great portion of taxpayers who are raising some mighty fine kids and helping the community in many other ways on a lot less than the figures tossed around for the operation of a single one of the Brown Camp homes Perhaps the parents of these emotionally disturbed children are paying the brunt of the cost but a certified balance sheet from the Brown Camp officials would soon verify this It must be determined whether Brown Camps Ltd is a legitimate business enterprise or small closeknit community entitled to subsidy from the taxpayer They cant be both as a business the government taxation department should be able to enlighten the public regarding the extent of the operation if they are a subsidized form of child welfare then the taxpayer is also entitled to know under what conditions A clearcut statement from either the government or Brown Camps is overdue for the sake of both the taxpayer and the children involved Worthy Promotion It possibly was Newmarkets last planned activity in observing Canadas Centennial but those responsible are to be commended for the variety of program attempted and the effort entailed The Thanksgiving weekend starting with the dance at the Canadian Legion Hall Friday night attended by many in costume reminiscent of a century ago through Saturdays variety of activities Sundays slightly quieter program and again the events which were held Monday gave the citizens ample opportunity to participate or enjoy the role of spectators Municipal officials members of service clubs Branch and communityminded persons proved during the weekend that we take second place to none in organizing an extensive program which would have been the envy of much larger towns r THE ERA Serving York Since you would be so kind as to print something in your paper to the effect of how kind the people were in helping my partner and myself in getting the voters in our Poll which was No Heights You hear ho complaints today J thought it would be nice if you could hear that all of these people were so They even were so kind as to take our phone numbers ho that they could call ami tell us when their neigh bors who we never could to contact would home Ah you know there was not deal of time for the enumeration this time so this was of great assist- Im sure that other enumerators were as fortunate as us and I really think It would be very nice to have these people thanked publicly I hope you think so too Thank you Mrs Donald Green t HAPPINESS Our photographer was faking a stroll through the park the other fay when he happened upon these two delightful young ladies After taking the picture we asked and him to write us a caption and cut lines He brought in a piece of blank led How can you really describe a childs happiness SUGAR SPICE By Bill Smiley Trials And Tribulations Theres an old superstition that things good or bad run in se quences of three Im inclined to respect it During the war casualties on my squadron always seemed to follow the pattern Wed lose a pilot today perhaps two the next day then none for a week Then three more It happened to me One day I was shot to ribbons by flak Had to land at miles an hour No flaps no brakes Fortunately I remembered a movie Jammed on throttle jumped on the rudder and just short of nasty ditch Two days later I had a tomb hang up and had to land with a bomb fused and ready to go dangling from my left wing That was the smoothest landing ever made in World War II The only thing that was a bit dis concerting was that the control tower made me laud not on the landing atrip but on the grass beside it so that I wouldnt ruin their runway when I blew up The very next day I was shot down This business of things happen ing in threes is still going on Monday the furnace goes on the blink Tuesday your wife gels ugly about the garbage or some thing Wednesday some jerk creases your car in the parking lot the good things come in threes And thats what happened to me this week Three delightful opportunities for the weekend and I can take in only one of them Sickening First of all J signed up to help supervise a trip to Expo from our school This in itself should prove a fairly hairy experience Cant you see me marching up and down the halls of a monastery in the middle of the night in my pyjamas and raincoat trying to prevent boys from being boys and girls from being girls Id just committed myself in this when old Australian buddy Dutch phoned to remind me that this was the weekend of that ancient and honorable bash known as the Canadian Fighter Pilots reunion Same place Montreal And he had booked me on a flight to and from the flcshpota of that fair city I was sorely tempted to with draw from the kiddies excursion go to the and take two weeks to get over it as usual Rut my wife said Youre not go ing You always come home look ing like a skeleton And that was that Resigned and feeling quite noble I was packing my stuff for the trip and patting my self on the back for doing my duty rather than my pleasure when number three came up An invitation to be a judge in a beauty contest on Saturday This is one Ive been waiting for for years Ive judged essay contests public speaking contests apple pie contests at the fall fair and for three years have been a judge for the Lencock Award for humor Hut Ive never had a chance to just sit there ami gawp at those cute kids leering inside and pre tending I chose the winner because of her talent rather than the way she parts her chest All I can say Is Shucks And all I need now is for Mike Pear son to call up and say Ive been appointed to the Senate provided I can bo there Saturday morning to be sworn In Oh I havent given up entirely I eould with the kids to slide over to the fighter pilots party the bus ride home and catch ji plane to the beauty con- teat Hut I think theyd probably bury me the day On Hit oilier hand that might not ho a had idea Im not long for this world anyway Not unless my wife it out a bit about going to rollego Friday night she came home all fired about her course At I am Saturday was rend ing the part of Socrates in Platos Dialogues And had to rise at seven to gel Kim to her bus for music lesson WEEK By Ray Argyle Election Time In Canada Three provincial elections in less than two weeks and three federal byelections set for Nov have come so quickly on the heels of the federal Conservative Conven tion that little time has been allow ed for the political temperature to cool off in Canada New Conservative lender Robert St an field will be personally involv ed only in the byelection in Nova Scotias ColchesterHnnts riding and there he will face no organized opposition Instead it was this weeks vol- ing in Saskatchewan and the elec tions Oct in Ontario and Oct in New Brunswick which drew most of the political attention In Saskatchewan Liberal pre mier Ross Thatcher an exCCFer turned ardent rightwinger faced his first test since dislodging his former fellow socialists from office three years ago Neither Mr Stanficld or his predecessor Mr took any part in the Saskatchewan vote but this did not mean that the out come was not influenced by the Conservative party Saskatchewan Tories ignoring Premier Thatch ers complaint that they would merely split the free enterprise vote to the benefit of the merged their federal and provincial organizations and fought hard to enlarge their toebold in the legislature In next weeks Ontario voting it was crystal clear that the boom ing prosperity of the province would send Conservative Premier John into another term this time with probably even more seats in the legislature than he won four years ago The catch was that the Ontario legislature has been enlarged by redistribution with more seats given to the cities and the suburbs Liberals and the also could come out of the election with more seats which would make the elec tion the first ever in which nil three parties could boast of gains And the real buttle was going on in those newlycreated seats with hopes resting on Metro Toronto and to a lessor extent t Ontario Now Democrats will bo delighted if they can replace the Liberals as the official The fight in Ontario is thus for second theres little doubt who will be the winner The New voting week after next is perhaps the most interesting of the three in that voters will render their verdict on a Liberal government policy which has brought about a genuine social change Under Premier Louis centralization program Now Bruns wick virtually wiped out local municipal government in favor of putting justice education health welfare assessment and taxation all under direct provincial control Premier calls It a pro gram of opportunity The opposi tion which consists chiefly of a reorganized Conservative party under J Call Van calls it destruction of democracy In next federal by- elect t he only real rout eat appears to lie In rid ing of The seat was held by Tory Dr Hugh Horner who quit In enter lite Alberta legislature It promises a giuui fight between Liberals and Con- in con Hat to the thing in riding ami in the third seat at stake Twillingale This third seat has belonged to Liberal kingmaker Jack and the possi bility that Newfoundland voters might reject the Liberal party there is about as likely as Mr being beaten by a write- in candidate Theres an interesting angle therefore to the JasperEdson con test It could decide whether Mr Pearson is to majority government without calling another election a result of Social Creditor Hud Olsons defection to the Liberals and assuming the two eastern byelections go as expected the Government will hold 132 of the House scats A victory In would give the Libcinls seats and Canada would again have majority govern ment for the first time since 1962 Crier By Elizabeth The first proposal of an abortion bill before a federal committee brings to mind again the less happy aspects of having babies as recent made public in the example of a family who repeatedly abandoned a severely retarded child of foster children being tossed around under most unfortunate circumstances If in their best interest One cannot help but ponder about the unknown heartbreak that must be suffered daily is obscurity by unwed mothers pa rents unable to care for offspring and children who set apart as difficult cases When science and medicine remedy pains and diseases lad even crooked noses and do all sorts of wonders with the human body by substituting more and more parts with matter foreign to flesh and blood one wonders why they are not given the legal right to prevent a lot of human misery through an abortion Divine Providence and morals are extensively Insulted within the law by either prolonging life Into oblivion through artificial means or by destroying masses through modern arms so lets not talk of these high principles just here And now that In international adoptions the term baby export Is being used then life unborn or born Is after all not all that sacred Many of our laws come from a time when people had no know ledge of the details of the anatomy and medical and other science and had to be protected and when each newborn head was worth its value In slavery Times have chang ed a bit no longer I It a crime to say the earth is round and travels the devils machines are part of our system and surgery and blood transfusions are dally routine In hospitals against the religious conviction of a minority who to this day oppose them When Mrs appeared before the Commons Health Com mil tee to propone her hill to legal ize abortion unit bring a fresh breeze to one dark corner of our law books score of men Im mediately Jumped their feel her mid arguing matter of which they know absolutely nothing None of them ever come any closer he experience of unborn life than after some months of uncertainty more or less enthusiastic pay a hatch of bilk The stale of pregnancy is the must Intimnle affair within a woman and In effect nobody elses business except her own and that of her doctor when she la half way through Now It transpires Hint the legislators regard her a her body from the first biological reaction a public property and they are eager to tell her of all souls new life begins New legislation based on the sound examples of Sweden and of should In this be put to a vote by only women and members of the medical not by incompetent males or bigots who forgot the Bible pas sage that There Is a time to live and a lime to die V
