Em NewmarketAurora Out Wed October REV McELWAlN MA THM St Andrews Presbyterian Church Within a month a provincial election will have come and gone With the new electoral boundaries and three new candi dates in this riding we might well wish for a longer time to hear and consider the issues and the men so as to be able to vote intelligently The Era is surely to be commended for its serious effort in the issue of Sept 20 to acquaint its readers with the candidates and their platforms In his book The Christian as Citizen John Bennett suggests that we might ask such questions as these On what principles do I decide to cast my vote at the next election Am I aware in the life of my nation or province of some obvious injustices or inequalities Does any of the existing political parties present a program which in my judgment is likely to lead without delay to the correction of those injustices and inequalities Am I satisfied that my views on these matters are really determined by Christian principle and not by prejudice or selfinterest In my church and community am I doing all that I can and should to promote fellowship and to make life happier and better for all my neighbors Now there have been times when people completely separated politics and religion with adverse effects on both State and Church Some have felt probably with some cause that the Church prefers to withdraw people from ordinary citizenship with its involvements to a sheltered life as citi zens of the Kingdom of God Church people have sometimes despaired about the world including politics as something evil or at least a mixture of compromise and expediency Rather than risk possible contamination they have withdrawn to a safe position of working within the Churchs machinery keeping religion alive and associating only with those of similar convictions They may still vote at electiontime but only as an Individual and according to habitual party attachment With the assumptions hat all parties are subject to cor ruption and that most problems including poverty are insoluble anyway they never become sufficiently concerned to work with others toward electing a particular candidate with a worthwhile platform The Bible does not encourage this kind of isolation The Old Testament has many prophets who were actively con cerned in the name of God with every internal and external problem of Israel as a nation The New Testament points to Christ as the King of kings and Lord of Lords He did not abandon this world to the forces of evil but came right into the thick of it and gave bis very life Paul surely spoke of involvement with the political structures of his day when he said I am a citizen of no mean city At the same time we must recognize that the Bible does not lay down a set of rules for a Christian to follow as a citizen of the world Nor does it prescribe a particular form of local or world government to be labelled Approved as Christian Nor does it suggest lines of politics guaranteed to solve every problem for every town province and nation But there are some emphases In the Bible that say something to us about political matters One Is the call to live responsibility Lack of a sense of responsibility is a severe sickness of our day affecting relationships of home and school employee and employer member and organiza tion with repercussions all the way from not voting at electionlime to hitandrun accidents No politician nor any other person should act as though he is a law unto himself with no responsibility to God nor the persons he represents The selfcentred Cain in the book of Genesis had to ask Am I my brothers keeper And politicians concerned only about personal gain in finances or status or career are to be called to account Daubers
