rf ERA WED JUNE VOL No 24 est ion Mayor Drew Doaks suggestion that all Newmarket retailers get together and form a townwide merchants association is an excellent one It was apparent at last Wednesdays meeting of merchants that there are two distinct schools of thought regarding store closing bylaws One school representing the Main St merchants wants the bylaws left just as they are Their reasons for the status quo are applicable to their type of retailing and are excellent reasons The other school representing the merchants wants the bylaws amended Their reasons for requesting the change are again applicable to their type of retailing and they too have excellent reasons for requesting a change Since both groups of merchants are transacting business in New market they both must abide by the law At Wednesdays Town Hall meeting many different opinions were given regarding store closing hours Some merchants from the Plaza differed with the majority Some merchants from Main St differed with their collegues With this variety of different opinions it is very difficult and almost impossible for council to make a decision regarding store hours that will please everyone Therefore the mayors suggestion of a townwide merchants is a sound one And it is up to him and his council to provide the leadership and impetus to form such an association Hamiltons decision John has apparently lo run for the Progressive made good on his disclaimers of leadership mean that old interest in the leadership He war horse John has at could have staged a spring last decided to step down Or Is Hon Won another week or so children attending the public schools will start their summer holiday This all adds up to more pedestrian traffic on the streets not at the recognized times of going to school and returning home Freedom from the routine of classes the enthusiasm engendered by the thought of many days of fun ahead tend to make children forget ful of safety practices when crossing streets and of course bicycles seem to loom at every street corner This is a time when those operating motor vehicles must exercise even greater care than usual Parents also should try and instil the thought in their childrens minds that holiday time can be a tragic time just because of a moments thoughtlessness If everyone young and old exercises a little more care this sum mer we stand a good chance of avoiding accidents Cops And Robbers Sir j- i r Dear Editor Being misunderstood and ones meaning distorted In the press is I believe one of the oc cupational hazards of being a poli tician and provided I am the only one hurt by it I am prepared to accept this as a fact of political life But when others are innocent ly involved too I do feel I must register an objection Last week I was reported as having stated We have far too many groups in this town Aurora who have turned out to be dead members Were these my words they would signify a blanket con demnation of all those citizens who give of their time energy and enthusiasm for the betterment of the community In fact the oppo site is true and without wanting to be maudlin I must say that I have the greatest respect for these people and I am proud to be as sociated with them Had I been quoted En full I If believe that the intent of my com- would have been clear and that was to seek assurance that people with appropriate talents should be selected to launch a ven ture which could become a very important development for Aurora namely a Railway Museum The tendency has been In the past here as elsewhere to hand out public appointments as a sort of an Order of Merit As recently as a man was recommended to council because of the church he In my opinion the future of this and indeed of Canada de pends upon finding the right man for the job Instead of the job for the man I trust I make myself clear Yours sincerely Evelyn M Buck Aurora Councillor i- i Mi Dear Editor readers of a weekly pub lication can benefit much and are challenged by the thoughtprovok ing editorial opinions of the Issues of Importance dally concern them His opinions fully irched and without prejudice political bias can advise arid Admonish a seemingly apathetic public In this year of our nations maturity two or more nil were live witnesses to the incidents which actually happened in Newmarket News coverage of any one of them would have furnished a weekly newspaper with a human interest story which would have merited our municipality a credit rating of distinction character and identity A motorist skidded his car to a lightning stop in front of the post office got out and escorted a threeyearold toddler who had escaped his mothers custody to the safety of the sidewalk This was accomplished amid the blaring horns of Infuriated motorists un aware that the life of a small child had been a near statistic of tra gedy on our towns streets A young couple with three small children spent a few minutes of their busy day picking up frag ments of broken glass in a down town parking lot The broken glass was a shattered milk jug which a fellow motorist had dropped Their samarltan act protected fel low motorists from the inconven ience and expense of lacerated tires and the pedestrian from per sonal injury A teenager rushed into a store grabbed a shopping bag returned and helped a little old lady pick up her scattered groceries which had spilled when the bottom fell out of her shopping bag An aged pensioner waiting in line at a cash register to pay for a small purchase noticed an 11- yearold boy in front of him em barrassed and frustrated because he lacked cents of the purchase price of a mothers day gift The pensioner removed a dol lar bill from his wallet and in structed the cashier to ring up the purchase and give the lad the change As long as self respect Is a virtue of society as long as a communitys standard of morality and integrity forbids bypass of the responsibilities of and as long as democracy Is valued for its inherent worth the editor and staff of a weekly publication are blessed with avenues of poten tial that are legion Their dedicated expenditure of effort In their chosen fields of endeavor will accord the true im pact of the printed word of those who read and think Yours truly Milton Morton Ellen St Newmarket Some of you gentle readers undoubtedly live next door to bookies others live cheek by jowl with bootleggers But how many of you can boast of living right door to a couple of bank robbers We can During the six years we have Jived in this house one of the many banes of my wifes exist ence has been the house next door Its a crummy old brick house shabby and dilapidated The tenants who change about every six months are in much the same condition as the house That is not said unkindly They are poor They are tough Its all they can afford Invariably they have great gag gles of children Invariably there is a good deal of screaming and some cursing at these tads In variably there is wine drinking and fighting But they struggle on the men in and out of work the women hanging endless miles of diapers on a clothes line that squeals like a banshee at every yank They dont bother me Theyre used to come over and use our phone when she wanted a cab to go and get some beer One little boy age three told me to go to hell when I told him to atop us ing our chair as a tram poline But nothing serious The only thing that bugs me is that the rotten old board fence between the properties keeps fall ing down And it always falls on my side They dont care Its not their fence but the landlords He doesnt care So I prop it up This week however things livened up Last Thursday a bank in nearby village was held up by two armed men They got away with about Roadblocks were thrown up as they say My assistant department head on her way to dentist was stopped three times by scowl ing policemen brandishing shot guns She weighs pounds and couldnt even lift in bills I heard all about It Friday morning at school In the meantime back at the ranch all hell was breaking loose First my wife got a call from the rectors wife How are you I mean are you all right Fine How is everybody at your place Fine but are you all right After more of this it turned out that rectors wife and prac tically everybody else in town had heard a rumor probably springing from an erroneous radio report that the money from the bank robbery had been found in the attic of the old Cranston home on Hugel Ave It just happens that we live in the old Cranston home It was once owned by Bill Cranston a weekly editor who went straight My wife did a very sensible thing She went straight across the street for a cup of coffee with a neighbor From there in com parative safety they watched the show- Almost immediately carloads of the curious began driving Dyv our house slowing down looking hard By this time three provincial cruisers and the local paddywagon were parked in front of our house and the house next door Cops swarmed about the place next door with drawn guns The kids enjoy ed It thoroughly chattering at the police Our neighbors phone rang mad ly as people demanded to know whether the Smiley were really in on it wife said she wouldnt took in the attic unless the neighbor went with her She refused on the grounds that she afraid of the squirrels up there The police cars were there moat of the Some klda came back to school from lunch and told their teacher that Mr Smileva house was surrounded by police cars Something to do with the bank robbery Rumors are still flying They say that the money was found next door They say that two men not the tenants were arrest ed there They say that tho guns were found Well I hope they are all wrong and that the original rumor was right One of these days Im go ing to get up enough nerve to go up and check attic And If the Is still there Ill send you a post card from Crete government he en- Canadas first big wheat sales to Communist China may be expected to pick Up votes from Western Canadian Conservatives when the party goes into its lead ership convention at Toronto in September But it Is still unclear whether Mr will dramatically step down on the eve of the con vention and thus try to influence its choice or whether he will hope to win another term as a result of the antlOlefenbaker vote being split among several candidates If Mr Hamilton will be the choice of the West it is becom ing increasingly clear that former trade minister George who gave up his job as head of the Montreal Stock Exchange to go back into Parliament is the fav orite son of Ontario and Quebec who possesses a certain air of glamor which passes for youth ful enthusiasm in some circles is undoubtedly the choice of the East ern Tory establishment It is this bloc which John Die fenbaker still regards as reaction ary and as unfit to lead the Pro gressive Conservative party as the kind of peoples party which he made of the old Tory big business- oriented machine row Conference hopefully would bring together politicians from Ottawa as well as all provin cial governments Crier 1 s In the early jockeying for dele- oi terrain gate is more than bal anced by support from the prairies central Canada and the Maritlmes A man who appears to be in the race solely for the exercise with out much real chance of making a dent on the party faithful is Senator Wallace an other Tory Establishment figure He was brought into the cabinet by Mr in the hectic days of when still Prime Minister Diefenbaker was perately trying to pick up Bay St support Another candidate whose pros pects appear hopeless is Mike Starr the former PC labor minis ter from Ontario But the most interesting pros pects have not at time of writ ing even announced their Foremost of these la Donald Ful ton the former finance minister who still has a big following in Toronto where he used to repre sent the seat now held by Liberal finance minister Mitchell Sharp Fulton quit politics in the wake of a family tragedy but is now being wooed by increasing num bers of Conservatives Other interesting prospects are Premier Robert Stnufield who won a smashing reelection victory in Nova Scotia and Manitobas Pre mier Duff who could have had the Conservative leadership on a platter had he gone along with Diefenbaker In the elec tion Instead he cose to remain in Manitoba and the bilingual influence on the scene has been declining ever since In similar vein Ontario pre- tains where they still outrun any car The most daring cyclist though would hesitate to go at mites an hour a terrific fly for two slim wheels unless a Harley-Davld- son machine Here on highways where heavy bumpers sail along built to take at a stride this little stranger allowed to try and hold its own While many accidents are caused by lacking In skill and many In juries through absence of gear there are a few points very much In need to be remem bered by both the cyclist and the i driver of a can J 1 The auto driver should never frown on motorcycles holding to the left side of their traffic he must change lanes to pass them which is the safe and proper thing to do Both should allow more space between each other ahead and from behind The braking distance needed by a car Is greater than that of a motorcycle at a car needs 243 feet to stop the cycle needs only On the other hand In an emer gency driver on four wheels and In a may slam his brakes comparatively safety while the rider behind him In doing so will be thrown off When passing the motorcyclist needs more space ahead as can not accelerate the same as the automobile To east off gas when being passed by motorcycles may prevent an accident These three point mention here have been established com pctently to be the most live to know and to be observed by every motorist They may help to keep to a token minimum the toll required by bur traffic sys tem for absorbing a yet strange type of motoring motorcycling
