of equipment including sharpened sticks pieces of wire and flashlights Yes and even rifles These sneaks in the night are poachers and the law should crash down on them with all its force At this time of year game fish begin the annual ritual of spawn ing The female swims up the creeks and ditches from big lakes and lays her eggs The male follows her and fertilizes these eggs At this time of year the game fish is lethargic and therefore not as alert as in normal times Their sole aim is to reproduce their L kind Normally a man with a spear or a snare would not have much of chance of bagging them But at this time of year they are in shallow water with very little natural protection To catch them is as easy as j shooting fish in a barrel literally These poachers therefore are not sportsmen in any sense of the word They are plain and simple cruel merchants of slaughter They are selfish because the spawning fish they kill can thousands of their kind that can be caught legitimately by the sportsmen The poachers slaughter ruins the sport for the man who spends a lot of money on equipment and many hours of patient fishing The poachers slaughter is killing business for the man who rents boats and motors to the angler Resort operators with thousands of dollars invested are hurt by this slaughter because if the fishing is bad the resort wont get the tourist bookings Men who poach should stop and think of what they are doing They should realize that their selfishness is ruining the sport of fishing for their friends and neighbors They should realize that their actions are hurting the tourist industry in this area And if they dont stop this slaughter the law should crack down on them with all its might jvm i mm f Vi i l WS j last week for drugs v Canadians pay too much paint job and a complete overhaul A number of new clubs and organizations have come into being since these signs were erected The signs need revising In fact its safe to say probably not too many citizens have even noticed the signs There are two of them One is located on the Third Concession of Whitchurch south of St The second is located on Yongc St south of the Both signs appear to have developed a decided till And its lime they were replaced This project would seem to be an ideal one for a local service club or organization to take on as a Centennial Project In their present condition the signs are indeed a poor advertise ment for our community Shouldnt we do something about them now Soften The Blow A number of Ontario communities arc implementing procedures to have ratepayers pay their taxes in four instalments instead of the payments as presently in vogue here We note that in St Marys the clerk was asked to investigate this possibility several weeks ago and apparently his findings showed the procedure to be so advantageous that it was quickly put into practice There arc several advantages to the four instalments There is a saving in interest payments on bank loans municipalities incur before taxes arc collected The City of has just changed to the four- payment method and saved in interest School boards and county councils often require huge loans until taxpayment lime Another advantage is the fact that many residents find it easier to meet more frequent payments of smaller amounts While its true they end up paying the same amount many people find it most difficult to save enough to meet the twiceayear payments and with taxes spiralling particularly this year this continues to be an increasingly difficult task One of the great bruising stresses of modern society to which pay little atten tion was imposed on me this week traded my car for a new one This psychological crisis comes to all of us every two or three years It bears looking at as a manifestation of the tremendous pressures we have to cope with and our grandfathers didnt What a snap they had They went to a reputable horsestealer and bought a horse No sweat They didnt even have to make agonizing decision of whether to buy a brand new one or a used There was no such thing as a new horse Whats more they enjoyed it There was some goodnatured dick ering which usually ended both parties thinking they had got the better of the deal chuckled as he drove his lively gelding home thinking of how much tradein allowance hed re ceived for Old the mare who hadnt much mileage left in her And the dealer chuckled as he thought of the gelding steadily going blind and the fact that readier who knew nothing about was looking for a quiet marc like Old My point is that it was not the wrenching exhausting thing that a modern car deal in The average layman then knew whether a horse was sound lie took a look at the teeth felt the beast here and there hitched it up for a trial spin and made his deal There was only so much that could be wrong with a horse He could be blind or spavined or windbroken Hut he didnt rust there was no chance of his brakes grabbing his transmission was automatically automatic and he didnt cost a year for life And thats one of the reasons I buy a car exactly the way used to buy a horse I look at its teeth That is I lift hood to make sure theres a motor and open trunk to make sure theres a spare I dont feel the beast here and there but I kick the tires and give the doors a good slam or two I take it for a little trial spin And if nothing falls off and the color stills my wife I deal There are different types of car buyers of course Theres the kid who makes a week He walks up to the red convertible with of chrome bucket seals and dazzling wheel discs points to it and says iimme one Cheer fully he signs the indenture papers which will enslave him for four years and departs the lot with a squeal of tires Where else can he find power and sex appeal for lousy a month Ami theres the born horse- trader who deals for the sheer joy of it He spends most of his spare time in car dealers lots badger ing the salesmen disparaging the merchandise and quoting the fie deal that Honest John clown the street has offered him He seldom has a car more than six months and deluded into thinking that his lot is improving with every trade But for the average layman loday buying a car is an excruciat ing ordeal He suspects the dealer He fears ridicule from his friends all of whom have made excellent deals lately Ho dreads the inter- view with the bank manager He trails from one car lot to another trying to find a for the price of a Volkswagen And the uphol stery must match all his wifes clothes Not me Not no more Lifes too short Yesterday I bought in minutes Let my wife drive it home Oh there were one or two little things It stalled and wo discovered the battery cable was loose light in the ceiling wouldnt go out and I had to phone the dealer to find out where the switch was One of the doors wont close And there was a delight ful hit of family excitement when my wife pushed the window- washer button it stuck and soapy water gushed over the windshield for five minutes with more suds than a detergent commercial Hut itll all work out Three years from now Itll be just an- other rustbucket almost paid for And 1 have probably added a year my life by buying like Try it yourself The catalog of sins of drug pro and marketers begins the committee said with the fact that more than per cent of all drugs produced in this country are from firms which are foreign- owned The effect of this is that Cana dian subsidiaries are prisoners of their parent companies Little re search is carried on in this coun try with the result that few drugs are developed here and sold abroad Canadian patent laws also tend to protect drug interests against foreign competition The commit tee urged in this respect that foreignmade drugs which are not subject to these laws should be allowed to be sold in Canada This would force Canadian firms to drop their prices The committee headed by Dr Harry Liberal member for Ontarios riding found that drug prices have increased an average of per cent since the cost of living index rose only per cent Profits of pharmaceutical com panies arc twice that of industry as a whole This can only mean that profits in comparison with what other manufacturers arc enjoying must be considered as excessive in the drug industry Along with excessive profits by drug manufacturers Canadians also pay through the pre scription drugs because of the habit of doctors of ordering drugs by their brand names instead of by their generic names The result is that a pharmacist receiving such a prescription is then requir ed to use a certain brand in fill ing the order Such name brands are invariably higher priced than nonname brands of exactly the same medicinal components pharmacists who usually mark up their prescriptions by two- thirds of their- wholesale cost should drop this high markup and switch to a straight fee system the committee urged The House committee also found that because there is little real competition in the drug industry manufacturers are spending a great deal of money up to per cent of its volume in pro moting and selling its products to doctors This is because so many drugs arc similar that there is no real difference between them On top of this the 12 per cent federal sales tax imposes an add ed hardship on Canadian drug users The hardship arises not merely from the fact that the tax is an added cost but that markups at the retail level are calculated as a percentage of the basic cost to druggist Drugs wholesaling at cost a phar macist because of this tax His twothird markup if that by insisting that doctors order drugs by their generic names By Elizabeth The other night the lights were on again in the upstairs of Main Street From across facing another in crease in their taxes though with more poise apparently than else where And yet we cannot go on like this year after year until taxes arc higher than the cost of our Everybody knows
