have a breed chickens called the Araucana that lays blue eggs cording Professor Hunt of the Department of Poultry Science Ag ricultural College University of Guelph lite color In an egg shell Is believed be related to many pecu liar the individual hen as well as to the number of eggs hen has laid Hence production from one flock chickens may vary widely In different hues of blue eggs fathered An Interesting point Is that when Araucana cross bred a chicken tint lays browncolored eggs the daugh ters will produce eggs having light olive green shells de pending Ihe Intensity of Ihe brown Newmarket fiirl Guide Companies attend a service held at the Salvation Army Citadel in observance of Thinking Day a traditional ceremony of Guiding CAS Director To University Womens Club KING CITY The Febru ary meeting of the Univer sity Womens Club York County Branch was held re cently at Kingcrafts King City The speaker was Mr C Van Camp who was appointed director of the Chil drens Aid Society for York County a year ago Mr Van- Camp was introduced by Mrs S Miller Richmond Hill a member who works part time for the Childrens Aid Mr Van Camps topic was the Coming of Age of so cial work and social workers in our communities Instead of rather sour strict Mrs Meanics of former years social workers are pleasant wellinformed people proud of their positions and genu inely interested in their work in community Instead of having to depend completely on charitable do nations for salaries and ad ministration of programs the Childrens Aid ohlalns ap proximately three quarters of its operating costs from the government The province as sumes responsibility for per cent of the cost of work with unmarried mothers and ft per cent of the cost of work involving adoptions It used be that Ihe wel fare of the child was second ary who was going pay the coils Now the old adage an ounce of prevention Is a pound of cure has been realized and each year a budget is struck which is designed to accomplish as much Ms possible According the Welfare Act passed last year the welfare of the child must take precedence even over religion The new act extends responsibilities of the Chil drens Aid Foster homes must be reassessed Section which calls for prevention of family breakups has brought many emotionally dis turbed children who were di rected formerly agen cies doors of the Chil drens Aid This extension of service family counseling service should opera- lions next summer This Act put great onus on workers he- cause of many referrals In spile of its proximity Toronto York County is slid quite rural Once off the main arteries of transportation communications are quite lim ited There is a great prob lem in getting people to the services available for them Mr Van Camp emphasized that there is a great need to have centralized services and to work together to provide economical and allembracing welfare service in the county At present there are 14 dif ferent welfare officers ap pointed by municipalities who act on a part time basis All of the work of welfare has increased in rather stag gering proportions There are many gaps in welfare pro gram for instance problems such as housing and menially- children come to the Chil drens Aid Many families have moved from Toronto In York County of the housing shortage Inadequate housing is one of the factors in family disintegration and therefore a problem with which Childrens Aid must deal Although a plan has been drawn up for a comprehensive countywide welfare scheme Mr Van Camp reported that it has been held in abeyance for further study Mr Van Camp was asked if there were any plans for day care centres in York County since the province has agreed lo pay at least per cent and up to SO per cent of their operating He re plied that to his knowledge the funds to start these centres were not available and that there was some doubt on the part of officials as need for them in York County at present Dr A Rich mond Hill thanked Mr Van Camp for coming and com mented she was very pleased that the Childrens Aid was moving Into the field of prevention Recipient of York County Branch bursary for was Miss Ionise hill Richmond Hill a student at York University Program Convener Mrs J Richmond Hill announced that speaker at he March meeting would be Mr Napier Simpson architect and advisor at Black Creek Pinnccr
