Ottawa Era III THE EDITORIAL PAGE WEDNESDAY THE 16th DAY OF SEPTEMBER NINETEEN HUNDRED AND SIXTYFOUR BACK STREET BOUQUETS Although we are reluctant to accept fact that winter is creeping in on us again and we will also soon be forced to accept the fact that green grass and fleers will be to view for a few months Newmarket residents can re- and fee proud of one bright spot lnihe summer activities The various displays of flowers and throughout the town sponsored and carefully tended by members of the New market Horticultural Society have caus ed many complimentary comments by residents and visitors The improve ments made by this working group has more than proved that interest and dedication can do much toward creating Two of the finest examples of the summer activities of the society are at the corner of St and Prospect Both sides of this intersection have been planted with appropriate flowers and plants and are an oasis of color when ap proached from any direction The second is at the curve comprising Church St Millard Ave and the intersection of Niag ara St Again there Is a riot of color from all directions with a continuance of ap propriate blooms from Spring until late Fall We hasten to explain that only results made available were used and the ques tion still in our minds is why two schools some little distance away could supply complete listings while the other two ap parently were quite satisfied to list only the top six students If the Department of Education issued an edict that cur tailed listings only be made available for the Press should it not apply to all high schools in Ontario From reports received we are of the opinion that similar circumstances ap plied at other centres and with a that St the is kept clean neat and attractive without being ostentatious and adds to the beauty of this section with the older charm of St Pauls Church to keep it company There are likely many other corners and places in Newmarket which given study and some dedicated elbow grease could add stilt more to the prestige of the town Lets not leave it all to such wiling workers as the Horticultural Society or delude ourselves that it is a of town council Each has done its part so far and accomplished an excellent job If we have a green thumb can do a practical chore by assisting ithis group and if nothing grows for us little financial help to purchase the lbubs etc will at least show them that appreciate their hours of time and work on these projects OUR ANNUAL REPORT Many people in Newmarket and surprised and dismayed at the in which Grade results for stu dents of Newmarket High School and Dr Williams Secondary School Suffice to say that in many re gions only the top five or six students received newspaper recognition of the fact that many people and not only parents of students concerned are interested in results generally and per haps would like to know how their own district school rated in the examinations it seems ft very shot sighted policy for the Department of Education or local school board to decree that almost noth ing he published The education of children is one of Newmarkets and Auroras most costly businesses Every taxpayer feels he is something like a shareholder in a company He likes to see the annual re port to see how his education mill is performing He feels he has the right to know how the students fared in these first Ontario departmental examinations to which the students had to submit they entered secondary school Students may be passed from one grade to another in secondary school on the decision of the staffs of the schools and quite properly so Grade is a dif ferent matter In these final examina tions of their high school life they must write exams set by the Ontario Depart ment of Education Here is a true test of a students knowledge What then are the reasons that Newmarket Aurora and quite a few other municipalities should be given such a meagre report Is it because the poorer students would feel chagrined to have it published that they had done poorly while some of their fellows did so well It could be to shield them from a public showing of inatten tion disinterest and a genera devil-may- care attitude all year It could he lo shield the poorer students from competi tion shielded that is until they leave school and then find themselves poorly equipped educationally for the cold com petitive world of the North American Auk Not content with experiencing some emotion at the lack of detail in the results published by The Era and Express quit a few took the time to telephone to ex- their displeasure at the inadequacy the listings To complicate matters and draw more ire upon our innocent we published in their entirety the results from Bradford and Sutton district schools The teachers who a great deal at slake in Grade 13 results may not wish the results published in detail In a way the results reflect either credit ably or adversely on the teacher Rut an extremely good teacher may have a class with less than average intelligence the Regardless of any thought of shield ing students or teachers most people would like to have the results available for all to see They are paying a healthy education hill and are entitled to an annual report- Newmarket Era and On behalf of the York neglected Their prime Count Junto At two bo of necessity
