new to Ihe York County Hospital by Hon Kail today Wednesday marks another great milestone in the progress of county medical and hospitalization services in all its phases It is a far cry from the basic hospital services started by Dr Lowell Dales in a house at the top of Main St hill Dr Dales purchased the building from Dr Hull in the early 20s The first public hospital was established in Newmarket in with accommodation for 25 pa tient beds and was referred to in days as a Cottage Hospital It served Newmarket and the county well and in 1915 the Margaret Davis Me morial Wing was added increasing the bed capacity to 55 In 1956 another new wing was added and with extensive reno vations to the older sections the capacity of the hospital was increased to pa tient beds and No project of this magnitude can ever hope to arrive at the point of realization without delays frustration and a belief sometimes that it will never reach fin ality or that someone has made sure of ordering door knobs but has failed to order the doors The hospital team including the man agement group headed by the administra tor the medical staff under the president Dr J McPhce and the supervisors and nurses are all to be congratulated for their perseverance and patience under the adverse conditions while the building was being erected Their continuance of ex cellent service while considered part of the duties by them must be appreciated in the community served by the hospital Total cost of the new structure will be approximately and while temporary borrowing may he necessary grants and contributions to the campaign reached a total of SI and the campaign is being continued It may be some time before the full Impact of the new wing is felt in the com munity but one thing is certain York County Hospital and its brand new asso ciate at Richmond Hill York Central Hospital will do much to alleviate the strain both on medical services and staff and will aid patients to a more complete and rapid recovery As the Lieut Governor declares tha new wing to York County Hospital offi cially open he will at the same time also open a world of the finest medical ser vices and equipment to the people of this part of Ontario who can be justly proud of the dedication and perseverance of those who have made the building and equipping of this structure possible WHOS TO BLAME It would seem that the amount of pub licity generally of an adverse nature from the council cham bers with amazing regularity must leave- i big question in the minds of most re- indents of Newmarket as to the reason if no thought is given to the effect on the wellbeing of the town further afield it could be quite asily reasoned that Newmarket is faced nth the problem of having something wrong in council or factors connected with the town which lessen its desir ability in the eyes of those looking on fro It no doubt is difficult to assess ex actly what harm is done but one could there appears to be sufficient reason for potential industry to shy away when rket is mentioned as a possible It has been said with an element of truth that Toronto newspapers delight in picking up news of a sensational or nature and if such be the council can hardly expect them to what might be termed newsy ven spicy tidbits which when read ertain quarters cannot fail to have me detrimental effect All of council are we think illy aware of this and are for the most part anxious to avoid adverse publicity but week pas without more grist for the mill being provided In soma cases lack of thought before making public statements is responsible The recent case in point is the regard to Police Chief Byron and even though subsequent information shows the Chief did advise the chairman of the police committee about his holiday arrangements and said chairman has stated his committee is satisfied Mayor Kent still wishes to make a further issue of the matter Scuttlebut on Main Street has sug gested that the mayors visit lo Toronto to attend the meeting Friday of the As sociation of Police Governing Authori ties was coupled with his intention to approach the Attorney General about the removal of the police chief from office If such was the case and we would be the first to admit that can be unreliable the mayors action was without the sanction of council as a whole This then raises the question whether Mayor Kent has this authority to act alone or whether it is a case of him in essence telling council he will do what he wants regardless of the council mem bers feelings about the situation If this is the case it would seem evident that the leadership expected of a mayor in municipal business is in real danger of being supplanted by a dictator ship The time is ripe for council to lake a stand so that all may know that what transpires in the council chamber regard ing policy and decisions comes from a majority vote of he nine men who were elected to conduct the affairs of New market CHURCH PROGRESS There have been many recent studies by interested groups on the impact of the church and its environment on the modern world and how the various de nominations ate reacting to the sugges tion that the modern concept of church is lacking in enthusiasm and has failed to provide the essential leadership which it appeared to have earlier in the century One thing is sure it has certainly be come big business in many cases and big business with its streamlining comput ers and competitive blind eye to some of the more ancient ideals has certainly wandered far from the original concepts of the Ten Commandments and at the same lime made its mark on the attitude of churchgoers in general We can remember a few decades ago when local church congregations faced Willi an increasing membership and con sequent enlargement of premises gave of their time and talents for many a weary evening each to do his or her own part to save the drain on church funds Such asks as painting flooring tend ing heating systems etc were willingly taken over by members of the Hon and there was little thought of hir ing help to do these jobs What a difference in the modern church Few are considered complete to day without the inevitable Christian Ed ucation but we were rather per turbed recently to find that one of these in the Toronto area was complete with badminton courts gymnasium and rooms for bridge There may he a connection somewhere here with Christian Educa tion and we were informed that it did valuable work in keeping the women of the congregation together but this 250- edifice is probably looked at with en vious eyes by some officials of the more decrepit YWCAs in the same district At the same time we were informed quite casually that church has four ordained ministers on the payroll with salaries reaching the and expens es bracket in one case down to a salary of with ear and apartment expens es at the other end of the scale One of these ministers we understand has the main duties of visiting the older mem bers of the congregation and contacting members Unless the main element of the congregation were millionaires we would suspect that con tinued public relations of this kind is possibly essential to balance the budget High School las speech follow helming majority heir ballots for the the lurmoil and dissension of reelected a Liberal In my travels throughout findings which
