NINETEEN HUNDRED SIXTY ONE BABY BLADES Hats off to the Newmarket Figure Skating Club It staged an ice show at the arena last week that was a credit to the town and the youngsters who took part in it Few of the children were over 14 years old There is nothing cuter than tots on skates and many a mother watched anxiously from the sidelines as her baby sallied forth under the scrutiny of spectators The mothers neednt the j performers LISTEN TO ADVISERS Optimistic developers are seeking the permission of King Township to build on nearly acres at the corner of Yonge St and Davis Dr This group has been making the same bid over the past two years so far unsuccessfully The pro cessions of submissions has culminated this month with a promise from the com pany of a sprinkling of homes golf for the site that So far King Township has rightly denied them permission to start tearing up the farmland to make way for the subdivision and its attendant problems With the recommendation of its planning board led by Bruce Davis the township has cautiously barred the way The township has consistently jibed at the rosy promises of selfsupport offered by the planners of the proposed project If the question of the areas sewage i- answered if the subdivisions own wells are sufficient to support itself if the more than 600 lots can be properly policed and if it can be decided who will he responsible for the fire protection still other broader ques tions are involved Although the corner site is politically mically within the scope of Newmarket What occurs within 100 feet of the town boundary by way of million dollar de velopments vitally affects the town and its ratepayers Newmarket townsfolk before they throw their hats in the air can be excused for wanting to know just how future building will affect the town services Will it cost them anything either in conveniences or cash Among other things the developers proposal calls for prestige commercial sites to be built along the St frontage We hope that this doesnt mean that Highway 11 will become out moded as the Main St of Ontario to be relegated to the role of virtually a ser vice road for the factories and stores It is significant that the planning boards of both King and Newmarket have rejected the earlier advances of the development company The township we believe feared the eventual cost to its taxpayers while Newmarket frowned upon the projects disregard for the towns official plan a plan that inevit ably needs the acquiescence of neighbor ing municipalities Newmarket Planning Board has already termed the Dr subdivision premature The question is also raised as to how much notice councils should take of their appointed boards In this case the plan ning boards of both municipalities have been reluctant to recommend the earlier proposals King Township has correctly supported its planning boards denial of permission although on the occasion that the request was before King Township Council last summer it was touch and go Within reason we believe that recom mendations of any council appointed board should be accepted by the parent council Particularly the wishes of a planning board Invariably experienced members have devoted extensive time to the specialized problems of urban devel opment If their carefully considered advice and recommendations are to be ignored there seems to be little point in having skilled advisers If a planning board prefers to reject a subdivision pro posal it must be for a good reason PRINTERS DEVIL A Newmarket councillor struck a blow for this month when he successfully blocked a move that would have seen a municipal advertise ment in The Phoenix Newmarket High Schools Yearbook After the school asked for an advertisement from the town Councillor Knapton
