Passionate coaches, competitive attitude drive Lady Hawks Continued from page 23 25 · Thursday, August 16, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Logan Hackett each scored twice, with Faye Varanesi, Raegan Wilson and Drew Gordon also tallying. Other individual highlights from the tournament were Maddy Clapham's four-goal effort and Wilson's hat trick against Kitchener-Waterloo 1, Gordon's three goals against Oshawa 1, and Madeline Hayes' three goals against Brampton. Also scoring during provincials for the Lady Hawks were Erin Heidecker, Addyson DeRyck and Bryn Rutherford. Goaltender Cassidy Eckert also contributed to the offence, often coming out of the crease to support ball movement and high-pressure defence. Tiana Tymkiv, Keira Courneyea, Camryn McConnochie and Kamryn Potts were other contributors to the bronzemedal squad, which is coached by Bryanne Gilkinson, Tanya Tymkiv, Dave Eckert and Liz Heidecker. Nancy Gordon is the trainer. Many players on the team also won Division C gold as U11 players two years ago. "They've added a couple of key people to their coaching staff, people with a lot of experience," Mike Varanesi said. "That has helped them futher develop their skill set and their competitive attitude." U15 team builds on last year's success After finishing second in Division B during the regular season, the U15 Lady Hawks duplicated that feat at provincials by winning three of four games in Oshawa. Oakville opened with an 11-6 win over Oshawa 2, then dumped Kawartha 9-4 and Owen Sound 11-7 before falling 9-6 to Kitchener-Waterloo in the championship game that began outdoors, was delayed by lightning and was concluded indoors. Thalia Zolis and Paige Strychaluk both scored twice in the final for Oakville, with Erin Murray and Olivia Harwood adding singles. Aurora Cordingley led the Lady Hawks with nine goals in the team's first three games, with Harwood adding seven markers during that span and Zolis and Strychaluk netting six apiece. Murray scored once in each of those three games as well, and goaltender Rebekah Keene came up big in the second half of the victory over Owen Sound. Also contributing were Alexia Zolis, Katja Zbogar, Sheila Murray, Megan Porter, Margaret Perrier, Tasha Beaudoin, Letissia Taricani, Natalie Schnarr and Sophie Nasato. Lauren McLaughlin, Darlene Zolis and Brent Harwood coach the team, and Trina Keene is the trainer/manager. "The U15 team had already enjoyed some success (last year's bronze in Division C), and they've built on that," said Varanesi, noting three members of the team played up an age level to round out the roster. Coach's enthusiasm keys U19 turnaround Varanesi and OMLA vice-president of girls' lacrosse Darlah Cordingley point to coach Jackie Noble as the major reason the U19 Lady Hawks were able to secure a provincial Division C title a year after a winless 2011 campaign. Being together for a second full season -- the team was put together at the last minute last year -- certainly helped as well. "For some of those girls to even want to come back to play (after last year's struggles) was great," Cordingley said. "A lot of that was (Noble) being extremely enthusiastic... I think part of her enthusiasm rubs off on the girls." At provincials, the Lady Hawks shook off an 11-7 opening-game loss to Orangeville to win their next four games. Oakville downed Toronto 11-7, Brampton 9-5 and KitchenerWaterloo #2 8-6 to reach the goldmedal game, then defeated Mississauga 10-7. Rachael Hardy had 15 goals during the tournament for the Lady Hawks, while Lexi Doherty had a team-high 17 points (14 goals, three assists). Erin Jordan added 10 goals and six helpers. Also chipping in offensively were Sarah Linton (three goals), Katie Quesnelle (two goals, one assist), Kaitlyn Smit (one goal, one assist) and Megan Hooper (one assist). Bella Triolo was solid in net throughout the tournament. Jamie Rodriguez, Delainy Doyle, Sara Anuseva, Emily Cummings, Alanna Schnarr, Rachel Loucks and Emily Taft also contributed to the gold-medal showing. Sean Doyle is the club's assistant coach, Mike Quesnelle is the trainer and Alison Doherty is the manager. -- Photos of the U13, U15 and U19 Lady Hawks can be found online at www.oakvillebeaver.com Follow Oakville Beaver staff on Twitter @OakvilleBeaver or @NewsHooked @DavidLea6 @DominikKurek @BeaverSports @Halton_Photog Get your fix RegisteR start sh today, o & We'll s pping. hip it SEPTEMBER CONDITIONING CAMPS ARE BACK!
