Continued from page 6 We depend on leaders I am lucky enough to not be worrying about taxes yet, and I don't know what it would cost to equip Oakville with recycling bins and step up our recycling program. Having said that, I'm sure that either our federal or provincial governments would be willing to subsidize an environmental initiative such as this. If that is not the case, and change has to come from the citizens of this great community, I ask you to do everything in your power to encourage their financial contribution. Maybe my lack of financial perspective is a hindrance, but I think it only allows me to think clearer. I believe that climate change is a bigger issue than the potential slight increase in taxes that may or may not result from this proposal. This is an issue that hits close to home too: this summer has been the hottest in Canadian history, and neighbouring Greenland is melting at an unprecedented and alarming rate. There is no denying that human presence on the earth has contributed to these issues. Oakville is a safe haven for luxury car brands, personal pools, and premium coffee shops, and we enjoy among the highest standards of living in Canada. I hope in my lifetime it can change to a safe haven for renewable energy, recyclable materials, and integrated land use. In Oakville, we have the means to one day enjoy the most sustainable standard of living in Canada, or even the world. 13 · Thursday, August 16, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com Larger Suites, Exceptional Services Excellent Rates The world has the technology to save itself.
