PCs push for disclosure of power plant costs By David Lea OAKVILLE BEAVER STAFF This week, Ontario's PC energy critic alleged the cancellation of the 900-megawatt gas fired power plant, which was proposed for the Fordowned lands of 1500 Royal Windsor Dr., could cost taxpayers as much as $1 billion. Nipissing MPP Victor Fedeli made the claims Monday in a release issued by the PC Caucus, in an effort to push the Ontario Liberal government to disclose information about the cancelled Oakville gas-fired power plant -- and on the heels of news that the cancelled Mississauga power plant would likely cost upwards of $190 million. Fedeli made the allegations Monday, stating that, according to the Province's own math related to the cancellation cost of a 280-megawatt gas-fired power plant in Mississauga, scrapping the Oakville project will cost a minimum of $300 million. That said, Fedeli noted unnamed sources have indicated the province could face a lawsuit of up to $1 billion. "We have waited nearly two years for the government to release information on the terms of the Oakville cancellation and we're still waiting," said Fedeli. "In the wake of the Mississauga scandal, the need for disclosure on the Oakville Liberal `seat-saver' is now urgent." The Province reported the cancellation of the Mississauga plant in October 2011, which would have been located in an area northwest of Sherway Gardens, cost $190 million, of which $180 million will be borne by the taxpayer. How the remaining $10 million will be dealt with has yet to be decided. Opposition parties have claimed the two power plants were cancelled for political reasons with Fedeli stating the costs involved should be billed to the Ontario Liberal Party's expense account. He also said the huge sums needed to pay for the power plant cancellations would be robbed from priority services and deficit reduction. "This reckless overspending puts at risk things Ontarians care most about -- like quality education and dependable heath care," said Fedeli. "That's the real scandal behind these power plants." The Province announced the demise of the Oakville power plant in early October 2010. The decision followed months of community demonstrations against the power plant with opponents stating the proposed facility was far too close to area homes and schools. The Town of Oakville also passed legislation hindering the power plant's development. In the end, Energy Minister Brad Duguid 7 · Thursday, August 2, 2012 OAKVILLE BEAVER · www.insideHALTON.com "In the wake of the Mississauga scandal, the need for disclosure on the Oakville Liberal `seat-saver' is now urgent." Victor Fedeli, Ontario PC energy critic, Nipissing MPP said the Province had put together a new Long-Term Energy Plan and found the Oakville power plant was no longer needed. Described as a $1.2-billion project, construction on the Oakville gas plant had yet to begin at the time of cancellation; however, TransCanada had already ordered large pieces of equipment for the project. It remains unclear whether TransCanada will be compensated monetarily or in some other way, such as being given a contract by the Province to build a power plant somewhere else. Oakville MPP Kevin Flynn has previously stated the arbitration timeframes surrounding the power plant cancellations are different because the power plants were at different stages of development and were being constructed by two completely different companies.
