Forty-five riders participated in the show-jumping event, competing for a total prize of $3,000. For her win, Laing earned $900 and also received a cooler and ribbon. Jackie Chong (In A Heartbeat), Ashley Bielb (Best Kept Secret), Sarah Hume (14K) and Rachelle Dyment (I Am Canadian) rounded out the top five. Former world champion figure skater and Canada's Sports Hall of Fame member Otto Jelinek was one of the notables to attend the horse show, as was Oakville mayor Rob Burton. entertained people like six-year-olds Monika Znamenacek (top, left) and Veronika Soural during Bertin Riding Stables' 3ft/$3,000 jumper classic horse show last week. Laing won the 45-rider event to earn $900. Before Friday's final round of the Toronto Star Men's Amateur, Michael Young sent his friend, coleader Brian Churchill-Smith, a bold prediction. "I told him I was going to shoot 62 today," said Young, who started the final round in a tie for 12th place. "I put it on his Facebook wall." As it turns out, Young's guess wasn't far off. The 23-year-old from Oakville caught fire and shot a 64 at Burlington Golf and Country Club, his best-ever round in a tournament. He finished the day at even par and settled in at the clubhouse awaiting his former schoolmate's result. The pair played together on Oakville Trafalgar High School's golf team. But Young's round, while sensational, wasn't enough to win. Churchill-Smith, 21, also had his best round of the tournament, shooting a 68 to finish the competition 2 under par and win the John Honderich Trophy. "My mindset was basically if you can keep it on the fairway, you can attack this course," he said after the victory. "So I just tried to get the driver going." The Oakville native from the Toronto Golf Club finished his round in style, sinking a tricky 25-foot birdie putt on the par-3 18th to seal the deal. Churchill-Smith's win is a redemption story of sorts; he was disqualified from last year's Star Amateur on a technicality. Most of the tournaments he plays in allow yardage telescopes, so Churchill-Smith used one at last year's Star Amateur, unaware that they weren't allowed (they were allowed this year, though). Officials sent him packing after four holes as a result. It remains the only time he has been disqualified from a tournament. "I'd like to think I'm a well-behaved golfer," he said with a laugh. On Friday, Churchill-Smith dodged a bullet when he recovered from sending his approach shot on the par-4 14th 30 yards past the green. He escaped with a bogey. "I could have dropped two or three shots there if I'd gotten cute with a flop shot there behind the green, but I made sure that I got it up and two-putted and get my bogey and get out of there," he said. It was anyone's tournament after nine holes. Churchill-Smith, playing partner David Crawford and amateur veteran Dave Bunker were all tied at 1 under par through nine holes. Three other players were within two shots. Bunker shot 4 under on the front nine, but the 47-year-old gym teacher couldn't maintain that pace, finishing with a 68 on the day, good for fourth place. Crawford finished tied with Young for second place. Young said it would have been fun to compete in a playoff with Churchill-Smith for the title, but admitted he couldn't have asked for much more from his round. Churchill-Smith's parents and grandparents were on hand to witness his win, a fact he was quick to point out after the round. "I can't take the credit for all this," he said. "The joke in my family is my dad's the manager and my mom's the nutritionist. . . . It's a team effort." Churchill-Smith, who attends Eastern Michigan University on a golf scholarship, is competing in a qualifier for the U.S. Amateur this week in Hamilton, N.Y. He's one of 70 golfers who will vie for three spots. AIM to Care for Your Heart!
