Banquet Held for Returning War Veterans
Haliburton, Oct 11, PNS — A special event here recently was a banquet at Drag Lake Lodge under the auspices of the B.E.S.L. Canadian Legion to welcome home the men from the district who have so far returned from overseas. The spacious dining room was filled by ex-soldiers and their friends, and a sumptuous meal was served by the staff.
Later in the evening everyone went to the recreation hall where several toasts were made. George Brennan gave the toast to the returned men and their friends and the reply was given by P.O. Oscar Yarnold.
Mrs. Long of Toronto was a guest speaker and she brought greetings and good wishes from the Toronto Branch of the Ladies Auxiliary.
Mr. Jack Vickery then presented the Charter to the Ladies Auxiliary to the Canadian Legion BESL, a newly-formed organization which already has a membership of 44 of which Mrs. Jack Preston is President and Mrs. Marjorie Hodgson is Secretary-treasurer.
A program of interest followed and after a singsong with Miss Rosemond Oliver at the piano. Mr. Bob Bannon favoured the large gathering with two guitar solos; Mr. George Brennan, performed several slight of hand tricks and Frankie Barnum, who has just returned from overseas, sang two numbers that delighted all present.
Several members of the Lindsay Branch of the Canadian Legion were present and assisted on the program as speakers and spoke words of welcome to the boys who have returned.
Many thanks were extended to Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jones and staff for their hospitality and the very fine banquet served.
