Police wrapped up their investigation Monday, after interviewing the victims and a mechanic who has worked on the powerboat Panama in the past. Police said they also watched a video recording of the fuelling and subsequent explosion of the vessel. During their investigation, police said they ruled out the possibility of any kind of explosive device being responsible for the destruction. They also said they found no evidence to suggest that anyone had tampered with the boat. The explosion took place at around 3:30 p.m. Witnesses reported hearing a loud "kaboom" and seeing thick clouds of smoke billowing from the dock. "We had a boat fuelling up, and when it pulled away from the dock it blew up," said Jon Leeson, Commodore of the Oakville Power Boat Club, where the explosion occurred. The people on board "got blown straight out," he said. Maryse Weber was on her own boat at the Oakville club, about 10 vessels down from the fuel station, when she heard the explosion. As her husband rushed to disconnect power cords, Weber ran toward the boat that was engulfed in flames and smoke. "All you could see was black clouds," she said. "The smoke was so thick it blocked out the sun." When John O'Hara saw the smoke, he thought a building was on fire. He watched the whole thing unfold from the Rebecca Street bridge, which overlooks the marina.
