OF AUGUST NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYNINE YOURS FOR THE ASKING Newmarket is not a particularly pretty town In fact there are probably quite a number of people who would testify it is not pretty at all Its river ia sluggish and smelly its roads are in mediocre shape its Main St is atrociously overcrowded its industrial sites are nothing to rave about Even its drinking water is un palatable But these defects and were sure if we dwelt on them longer we could enlarge the list are well known and town authorities will claim on their way to being overcome The point of this editorial is not to bury Newmarket under a layer of unfavorable criticism ra ther we wish to praise a certain segment of the towns population that devotes a great deal of its time to creat ing beauty in the midst of ugliness The bouquet an apt metaphor is for the New market Horticultural Society In the last year they have planted over 200 trees in town and have developed four flower beds at the Registry Office at the west end of Eagle St at the corner of Water and Prospect Sta and at the corner of George and Eagle Sts They plan two more Urn Fall tulip beds at the plot And they are anxious to plant trees on the property of anyone who wishes it The Horticultural Society is supported by town and government grants and by private donations Time spent by its members it entire Newmar ket people especially the big industrial concerns who so often by their very nature detract from the town appearance will do well to give the society their con tinued and increased support As members point out trees conserve moisture and feed water to the town wells They also add consider ably to the value of any property and last but not least they greatly enhance the appearance of the town Trees and attractive flower beds are to be had in Newmarket almost for the asking So pet busy and ask HOT WATER Despite daily assurances from Washington of last ing and enduring friendship for Canada we get the brushoff when it comes to matters of self Interest to the US That annual grab of millions of gallon of water from the Great Lakes to feed the Chicago drain age canal is to the fore again This time if it passes the US Senate it is going to hit directly at our pockets Our hydro bills will soar by millions due to this diversion of water from our power plants Those who have been in the or Georgian Bay this year have seen evidence of the damage done by lowered water levels Canada has protested about this Steal but gets nowhere even when she has lined tin partners the lake states of Minnesota Wisconsin Michigan Ohio New York and Pennsylvania We can only trust that President Elsen hower will vetoe the bill He already has done so twice Chicagos battle for mora Lake Michigan water stems from the US Supreme Court decision in 1929 which ruled thai while Chicago could take such water for navigation it could not take it for sanitation It is to override that Supreme Court ruling that Illinois is try ing so determinedly to write a law that will make diver sion of more water constitutional What Chicago wants is the right to divert another cubic feet of water per second into the drainage canal that links the Great Lakes with the Mississippi watershed for sanitation purposes It needs it it claims to flush out its drainage canal which still accumulates about per cent of Chi cagos sewage the other per cent being taken care of by sewage disposal plants Actually this years Chicago water diversion bills are modifications of previous ones designed to make them more acceptable For example they do not ask for either permanent diversion or even a threeyear diversion of more water but only one year as part of a thresyear study of the effect of such diversion on lake levels the rights of other states St Sea- way shipping and power projects To make the propo sal mora palatable to Canada Senator Douglas who is really the spokesman for the diversion hills has assured Congress We are willing to offer to indemnify Canada if she can prove before a court or body of com petent jurisdiction that her shipping and power inter ests are damaged by the totality of our actions Among the persistent critics of these Chicago water diversion la Senator Alexander Wiley R of Wis consin though witnesses against the bills include other lake senators tha Mayors of Milwaukee Cleveland De troit the Lake Carriers Association the Great Lakes Harbor Association the New York State Power Author ityand the Stale Department which periodically files Canadas objections with Congress According to he Wisconsin senator Chicago has created this situation by not taking care of Its own sewage modern dispo sal methods Is the federal government responsible for clearing up a local sewage problem which Chicago neglect has created asks the senator Chicago wants lo divert water from one watershed to another he charg es against the interests of other lake states and the opposition of Canada In this legislative battle that finds Illinois congress men fighting its lake neighbors almost to a man the question naturally arises how Illinois can so consistently get congressional backing when its sister states on the Great Lakes are so opposed One answer is supplied by Senator Robert Kerr chairman of the Senate Public Works Subcommittee considering these diversion bills Lake Michigan is not international water and there fore its none of Canadas business what is done with that water And as for New York it has no legal claim it is argued since it is entitled to share only in the water which flows out from Lake Erie through the Niagara River not the water in Lake Michigan miles HOT AIR Group Captain Charles Limbrick retired ra dar chief claims that the MidCanada radar line an essential element in the North American defense warn ing system was a colossal blunder and a waste of money This system cost Canada The original estimate was less than Defense Minister denies both the and the waste We believe Steps are already being taken by the Defense de partment to repair or strengthen this useless line which is established along the parallel Nearly every thing we have beard or read about North American de
