their first and last game on home ice It isnt very often that a scribe is able to make that statment in midseason However in this case it will be true if the Smoke Ring man agement carries out its avowed intention to transfer home games to thr Bradford arena That remark last week about a win over Aurora being worth four points must have stirred up the AlcornMundell Bears They came to town Thursday and edged our Smokies in a dra matic struggle on Newmarket arena ice For the Smoke Rings it was their initial setback be fore local fans It was a game that started slow but gained momentum as it progressed Both teams in the first period were extra cau tious and both checked diligent ly During those first two periods played close to the vest the Bears had the best of the argu ment If they could have put the puck behind the ever alert Smokie goalie they could quite easily have built up a three or four goal lead however was up to his usual grand larceny tricks and foiled many of the Bears gol den opportunities This doesnt mean that the netminder Alan Child wasnt good too Child earned a star rating for his efforts still he wasnt as busy as his opposite number The first period was a standoff Both first round goals were scored with the opposi tion a man short Ray Dupuis was doing time when Barry Cook let fly a long screened shot after Danny had flipped back a pass to Cook sta tioned at the point Cooks coun ter came at the four minute mark Goalie Child received a slashing penalty at The Smokies laid to the Bears citadel and Bob scored from Jerry Fox at to match the Bears earlier tally Gary playing his best game of the season and un doubtedly a best man on the ice tipped in a relay from Ken Mc- and Fred Davis at 113 of the second period Marcel stickhandled right through the Aurora defense at to draw Child out and drop the puck in the net At the minute mark Newmarket jump ed ahead 32 as Jerry Fox went in to score after Bob Massoneuve and Peter had latch ed onto Fred Davis clearing pass The Bears tide the score in jig time In fact it was exactly five seconds after Fox had boosted the Smokies ahead that the determined Bears fired the equalizer Doug was the scorer The Bears big front liner threaded his way through the Newmarket defense to beat from the doorstep Bears newcomer Ken McKinrion got the assist got his second goal and the ultimate game winner at of the final period Gary and Barry Cook set up this goal scoring drive The Smoke Rings went down real game battlers They hem med the Bears in their own end and stormed around Childs in the final five min utes The puck did everything but go in the net Child too performed miracles on occasion to turn aside la belled shots In the final 50 seconds coach Norm hauled out Jelley in favor of a sixth attacker but even this strategy failed to produce re- Suits Bill mundells Bears while the heat was on certainly earned highest praise for an all- out checking effort Our thanks and best wishes record to six straight wins Newmarket hopped ahead in the first period then put a on the decision with a snappy unanswered three goal scoot in the middle round Marchants hopefuls did their best in the final session to out- score the locals 21 but the visi tors best wasnt quite equal to the occasion Ken Needier banged in the first Optimist goal John White and Keith Burling assisted Pe ter McLachlan scooted in to get the second tally Terry Cain on a clever play and low shot opened the Opti mists second round scoring McLachlan added his second goal then John White fired two goals one in the second period another in the third to complete the Optimist count Ken Needier and Mike Wal ton set up the pass pattern on McLachlans second marker while Needier was the pass sender on Whites first goal Sampson Clint Shaw and Bruce Thompson unleased the shots that beat Chuck Goddard In each case that was quite a feat as the efficient Op timist goalie was going great guns Bears And Hornets Tie In Super Eight Game Two guys most likely to have their names crossed off a few Christmas lists are Alan Child and Sutcliffe The strik ing off will likely be done by Aurora and Alliston forwards These two netmindere Child of Aurora and Sutcliffe of Alliston proceeded lo cheat- the opposi tion shooters out of their eye teeth as the two clubs had to settle for a lall tie at the Au rora arena Friday The game was a Suburban Super Eight league affair Both teams through the even ing blew a flock of chances to break the tie but the goal pasts shifted just enough to let the biscuit slide by Certainly such players as Doug Mclnnis Ron Dan Keith Browning Barry Cook and Gary Bonham of the Bears and St Pierre Larry Mcrkley Bill Edgar and Bus Deschamps deserved some con sideration from the scorc-keep- No one asked or gave quarter so the result was a steady stream of miscreants to the jug Referee Jim MacLain kept things under control with his ready thumb In all 23 roughians did time had 13 of the total Paul Courtney broke the scor ing ice for Alliston His goal came at of the first period and Bears winger Ken McKin- found a loose puck lying Then came the second period unattended at the crease edge and promptly tucked it in the net Gary Bonham a star performer once again drew a well merited assist on the play From there on Child and his opposite Sutcliffe erected iron curtains and the marksmen
