members try to follow at Pickering Col lege is an ideal philosophy of good citizenship It states We will never bring disgrace to this our city by any act of dishonesty or cowardice nor ever desert our suffering com rades in the ranks We will fight for the ideals and sacred things of the city both alone and with many we will revere and obey the citys laws and do our best to incite a like respect and rev erence in those above us who are prone to annul or set them at naught we will strive un ceasingly to quicken the pub lics sense of civic duty Thus in all these ways we transmit this city not only less but greater better and more beautiful than it was transmitted to us Recommend Burbidge Named County Chief Committee To Report The recommendation that Chief Byron Burbidge of Newmarket be appointed County Chief of Police has been referred to the York County police committee for further study by York Coun ty council County police work is handled by the Newmarket force under the direction of Chief Burbidge It includes the transportation of prisoners to and from the Don Jail and magistrates court New market fingerprinting and photographing of prisoners cler ical work and fingerprint ex aminations at the- scene of breakins I dont want any authority over any other chief constable in the county explained Chief Burbidge But I do need to have authority over the prison ers the chiefs bring into our Jail If for example the Sutton police bring a prisoner into having the town chief named county chief Newmarket is quite satisfied with the arrangement with the county replied DcputyHecvc Violet chairman of the Newmarket police com mittee We are quite happy about the idea of having our chief given the authority to act as county chief If we can give him that au thority without giving him the title of county chief I would sup port the idea said Reeve Wil liam Clark of Markham town ship I feel it is the first step in having a county police force It was agreed un animously that the county didnt require one when the former county force was disbanded York County council agreed that the police committee should give further study to the recom mendation The committee will market and put him in jail he j report later to council remains a Sutton prisoner con tinued Mr Burbidge If I want to put him on bail I cant as I have no authority over him Doe this mean we shall be going back to a county police force asked Waller Rate East bury No replied Mr Sellers Chief finds it embar rassing sometimes when prison ers come into Newmarket cells but he has no authority lo put them on bail There would be no difference in costs but it would give Mr the au thority he feels he needs in such situations I feel as if I were trespass ing when I give judgment on some of these cases when I cant reach the chief concerned said Mr It would save a lot of unnec essary work and time agreed Warden J Taylor reeve of Richmond Hill but I feel like Mr Rate that it might be pet ting back to a county police force Could we work out the same idea without calling Mr county chief We in the county are perfectly satis fied with the agreement we have with Newmarket Should we not have a letter of recommendation from the Newmarket council before we act on this asked Deputy- Reeve Floyd Perkins of Rich mond Hill What is the feel ing of Newmarket town council I HOLLAND LANDING Candlelight and carol service will he held in the United church on Sunday Dee at pm Rev will preach Special music by senior and junior choirs Everyone wel come There will be a candlelight carol service in Christ church at 730 pm Sunday Please make a special effort to attend Readers Write Dear Sir If Newmarket municipal coun cil follows the pattern of Auroras council and enforces the snow shovelling bylaw the members will bump into one major diffi culty In enforcing that bylaw cer tain members of the council will find themselves guilty of the vi olation and eligible for whatever punishment is meted out In this letter it is not necessary to become personal and mention names All individual members of council have to do is look at their sidewalks and as the saying goes If the shoe fits wear it These members of council re ferred in this letter may even have to buy new shovels as their old ones may be mislaid or rusted away from nonuse for a long period of time Yours truly A
