very few people in the parts of the world that acknowledge Christ as Saviour who do not have little corners in the heart and the mind where they store their con ception or Christmas My conception has never changed from the beauty and mystery thai surrounded me on the Christmas Eves of my child hood and the wonderful feeling of joy and gladness of Christmas morning when I stood between my mother and father in church and watched the colors from the stained glass windows touch the choristers robes with splendor and the lights play among the glittering stars and garlands of evergreen On Christmas Eve my mother and I read or rather sort of chanted together Twas The Night Before Christmas as we hung up the stockings and I loved to think of all my chums doing the same thing Then when I was cuddled in bed mother would sing and would join in Once In Royal Davids City and While Shcp- herds Watched think the thought of the bringing gifts to the Infant King was with the thought of St Nicholas bringing gifts to me al though I knew even in my childish way that my greatest gift was the Babe in the Manger at Bethlehem Last night I thought as watched Archie fix our tree with the star and angel on top and the creche below how wonderful it is that in this day and age of bigger and deadlier weapons we take time to bow before the Prince of Peace Speaking of peace we listened with a great deal of pleasure and satisfaction to Lester Pearsons speech following his acceptance of the Nobel Peace Prize He said that never had here been such a necessity for building and preserving peace among the peoples and nations Any glamor that may have at tended war in the preatomic age had vanished War now could only mean one- thing destruction He said too that peace was more essential because of the awakening of Asians and Africans to the know ledge that they are entitled to a better standard of living and that they must be helped to at tain that standard peacefully Then too we listened to Mr address the Rotary club where we the orches tra were playing during dinner Mr Brettel emphasized that one of the essential duties of but not confined to them FOR KIDS On The Funny Side Of The Street Be a carefree Santa was to be of service to their community And it seemed to me listening to these men and to lately that they were just expressing the Christmas spirit the promotion of peace among all men and the duty to ones neighbor This article being all about bits of Christmas I wish to speak of the Christmas meeting of the at the home of Mrs Penrose We had an address and a demonstra tion on flower arrangement by Mrs of Aurora She showed us some lovely ways of arranging chrysanthemums which yet were simple enough for amateurs to copy She also made two corsages one of which was given to our president Mrs Ridley and the other to my de light to me This meeting is always delight ful too for its carol singing of which I for can never get enough Mrs Glover gave a re port on girls work and Mrs Robinson and Mrs Clare Penrose gave some appropriate readings- Mrs Penrose had a lovely recorded solo fitted into her talk The stuffed rolls and a beautifully decorated Christmas cake this being the work the cake I mean of Mrs Carson Robinson made a delicious re flection We always have more elaborate refreshments at Christ mas than at any other Now I want to end this article telling a little about one of the nicest Christmas parties I ever attended This was by Mr McCauley to the choir of the Newmarket United church Each member could invite a friend and Archie and I went as the guests of Mr and Mrs Doug Crook About guests sat down at tables which were with balsam boughs and red candles The dinner which was prepared by the Junior was delicious The turkey was done to a turn and its accompaniments of vegetables and salads equally good The dessert was ice cream and angel cake Rev White was chairman and he thanked Mr McCauley from the bottom of our stom achs for his nice gesture in thinking of the choir Mr Walker thanked Mr on behalf of the choir and the ladies of the for the excel lence of their repast Mr Nash also spoke his appre ciation and was happy to see all his choir at one time Mr Cauley then replied to the speakers and told of his pleas ure on the occasion We were sorry we were so far from Mr that we could not hear all his reply The choir following the din ner put on a short program for their host and guests Vocal solos by Mr Crook Mrs Bar bara Brown Mr Bob Wallace Mr Ken Stephens and Mrs Lou Stephens with a violin solo by Stephens composed the program with the addition of carol interspersed between the numbers Mr Nash and Miss Jean Rose the accompanists and everyone thoroughly enjoyed it After Mr White dismissed us with a blessing everyone sought out Mr McCauley to tell him What pleasure he had given In Mr McCauley party was exem plified the Christmas spirit of giving At we give be cause on that day we received the greatest Gift the world has ever know Seeing that there are only a few more days until Christmas I want to give you kids a few words of advice Start treating your mother kindly although it may scare her at first I met a woman the other day on Main St and I asked her what she was getting for her kids for Christmas She said she did not have any offers yet You kids get into bed early and go to sleep Remember the rest of your days depend upon the rest of your nights Mothers do your children rant and rave for you to buy every cereal advertised Make your kids eat that cereal so they will grow up and be strong enough to make their kids eat it Yesterday I returned from the Northland with a milk bottle full of real Santa rein deer Kids it is as easy as fall ing off a log AH you need is a telescope a milk bottle and a pair of tweez ers Then you proceed to the land where the reindeer are It is important that you get as close to the reindeer as possible with out being seen Turn the telescope around the opposite way The small end nearest the reindeer This makes them appear so very very small you can then reach out pick them up with the tweezers and put them into the milk bottle hope I have a better Christ mas this year than I had last year Just before Christmas last year a certain character whom I had ridiculed for his unscrupu lous tactics notified the editor that he was about to enter a suit by SmithRyan and Burns So I sat rihl down and wrote him the following letter Mr A Malfrier Dear Sir My editor just informed me that you are entering a suit by SmithRyan and Burns May I say that I am not quite so for tunate as you are I havent sold an article I have written for three months Things are so bad with me that when I got home last night found my wife eat ing the cheese off the mouse trap However strange to relate I am about to enter a suit myself by three prominent people The pants are by Brad Walker The coat is by Dr and the vest is by Harvey Lane I never heard a word from that since 1 to take this opportunity of extending people of Newmarket surrounding ter ritory the editor ami his asso ciates a very merry Christmas Be Careful Watch For Xmas Tree Fires Christmas trees a symbol of gaiety and happiness too often become a mass of flames and a symbol of disaster according to the All Canada Insurance Feder ation Trees decorations and special Christmas costumes should all be chosen with special care and pro tected from fire The Federa tion which represents more than Canadian fire automobile and casualty insurance compan ies make these recommendations for safety in the home during the Christmas season Choose a small tree it will be less hazardous than a larger one Keep the base of the tree in a container of water the water will be absorbed and keep the tree moist 3 Keep trees away from stoves heaters and fireplaces Use good quality electric lights on the tree not candles Check your lights for any defects which might cause circuits Be sure that Christma lights do not overload the elec trical circuits in your home Keep papers gifts and other inflammable articles away from the base of the tree until Christ mas eve Do not use paper gauzelike materials or other highly inflam mable cloths for childrens cos tumes 9 Check carefully for burning cigarette butts after every party or gathering in your home Futurama Lipsticks AH Products Available at I Harvey Lanes
