A talk and demonstration on flower- arranging was given by Percy Bone when the Newmar ket Horticultural society held its November meeting Miss Shir ley Cass presided in the absence of the president Mrs Hayes introduced the speaker Mr Bone arranged three different types of bou quets speaking on mums as he worked The arrangement of glads annuals and other garden flowers were included in his talk assistants The Newmarket CoOperative Nursery school is celebrating its sixth birthday this year Held in the Masonic Hall Millard Ave Monday through r i d a from Sept to May With the ex ception of legal and public school holidays the school is open to all youngsters of the district between the ages of two and a half and five years Mrs Jack was the charter president a post she held for two years Mrs Edna Ballard succeeded Mrs She served two years In the president was Mrs Jack and this year Mrs Robert Yates is the senior officer As most parents are aware nursery school provides through a carefully planned and super vised program an opportunity for the proschool age child to learn new skills and lo develop his individual talents and abili ties It helps the only child be come socially adjusted able and to share Ids toys It prepares the shy child for tin more difficult task of meet ing a large group of strangers in his kindergarten class It helps correct tendencies in the more active youngster before Ihey can cause trouble in his elementary school life For the family living in a small apartment where play space is at a premium or for the family whose home is on a busy street the nursery school performs rial service- It provides com radeshfp with children of the same age in an active program It guarantees safe surrounding with freedom for creative play under the constant supervision of specially trained personnel All these things are done in a cooperative nursery but addi tional benefits are provided Be cause the parents a r in the responsibilities of school they gain invaluable experience This helps t to understand the problems of their own children and to be less critical of others Parent education is an integral part of a cooperative nursery school program In addition the services of the nursery school are provided more reasonably through this method of operation than can be done in a private school More families can avail themselves of its bene the To ronto Conference of the United Church of Canada was special visitor at the November meet ing of York Presbytery of the United Church of Canada meet ing in Trinity United church Uxbrldge Mr Stymiest is min ister of St Andrews United church North Bay and had add ed Ihese presidential duties to a life of the pastorate that was al ready an active and enterprising one He was welcomed to by Rev M R Jcnkinson of King City chairman of York Presbytery The president divided his ad dress into two parts first a care fully prepared and enthusiasti cally presented discussion on ways in which the fellowship of the ministers and laymen of To ronto Conference might become more effective and meaningful In this discussion he advanced several suggestions which he felt would help the ministers of the various areas of the confer ence to feel a togetherness Among his suggestions were the providing of billets for delegates and a common meal table He suggested that on the Sun day before conference a program could be worked out by which the ministers of the confer ence would exchange pulpits the men of the northern outlying areas exchanging with the men of the city and adjacent com munities Mr then proceeded show how the agenda of con- could become more ap pealing and interesting to those who attended He closed by sug gesting that those who plan and xecute conference should have he following attributes zeal willingness color audacity earn- and earnest expectation Members of presbytery were liven an opportunity lo share in i discussion of Mr proposals which were received with a great deal of enthusiasm The second part of Mr address was an illustrated on his recent visit to the Holy Land These pictures were made more real and meaningful by the interesting and informa tive commentary of the speaker Rev Norman Pick of Mark- ham was the devotional speaker it this session of presbytery and he conducted an inspiring and lb 25c helpful worship service One of the highlights of pres bytery was the formal reception of Mr Francis Cook of Aurora as a candidate for the ministry Introduced to the court by Prof John Macpherson of Newmarket Mr Cook addressed presbytery briefly and was received by a special ceremony conducted by Mr Reports were presented from various committee conveners Rev Robert Curtis of Mount Al bert related the work and func tion of the Department of Infor mation and Stewardship and an nounced that the United church calendars were now available Rev S Butt of reporting for publications told of the extensive work and inter ests of the United Church Pub lishing House He urged every charge to consider carefully the EveryFamily Observer Plan and stated that his committee was of the opinion that each charge the excellent Sunday school ma terials which our church provid ed Presbytery was informed of the activity of St Matthews United church Richmond Hill the most recently formed charge of the presbytery It was also noted that Victoria Souarc had issued a call to Rev A Bin- nington of to become minister there Rev H A Kennedy of urged all ministers and laymen to see that their charges did not neglect the Missionary and Maintenance Fund so that York Presbytery would fulfill its its obligations to this fund He laid particular emphasis on the special Christmas appeal for S500000 for the needy of the world requesting that each church make a special effort in this regard It was announced that Dr Allan Knight agricultural missionary of the United Church of Canada would be the special speaker for the January meet ing of York Presbyterial of the Womens Missionary Society and that Dr Margaret Arkinstall Presbyterial president was par ticularly anxious that there be a full attendance of teenagers for this occasion Presbytery accepted an invita tion from Rev Norman Pick to meet at Markham in January PARENT EDUCATION IS MEETING THEME Parent education was the theme of the November meeting of the Alexander Home and School association Mrs Noble presided A panel discussion highlighted the meeting when the following questions were considered If a child prefers another church rather the familys usual place of worship is it right to let him go there How can we help children to understand the prob lems of the slow child How can we help the slow youngster to get along with normal child ren How can we help our children choose worthwhile hob bies and extracurricular activ ities How can we encourage the gifted child to live up to his abilities Mrs the panel Moderator was Mrs Nelson Ion associate editor of the Era and Express Panel ists
