SEEKING REELECTION AS COUNCILLOR For cars on Election Day call For 1958 Council vote Salisbury IF YOU WANT Newmarket Candidates Give Their Election Platforms I years on school board He was not present Newmarket candidates at the Domination meeting last night A Kent Mr Kent said that due to a death in his family his speech would be He explained that he had wanted Wright- man looked after as hi reason for allowing himself to be nom inated as reeve a nomination he later declined in favor of coun cillor as he has been he said That man has had a knife in me for sometime He bet me I couldnt win an election I suggest he use the to go to Wyoming to get the rest of the cowboy suit He only got the hat this summer said Mr Kent In clause three of the band act report it says the money will be put in a fund and administered by the town clerk Clause two states onehalf mill of the total assessment will be set aside each year for the band in this fund Onehalf mill today represents 5500 As the assessment goes up this grant will increase If the assessment doubles in the next five years the bands grant will be 11000 and tee surplus would be left in the fund It would be better if a committee could be set up to look after it If the money is not used it will lie dormant in the fund It would be better for the band to come each year to council If Im on council I would see they got five or six thousand dollars each year served on the Property com mittee this past year and will take some of the credit Deputy Reeve said the Property committee deserves I also was a representative of council on the Aren commission The commission never reported on expenditures before In the last year the Arena commis sion paid back to the town The first financial state ment ever published in the press appeared last year due to the work of Councillor and myself Mr Kent thanked his spon sors and asked for the ratepay ers support at the polls a few points of next years pro- After thanking his sponsor Mr said he was pleased to see the large crowd in the town hall and the many candi dates It is better than the past years and regardless of the out come I am happy here is this competition he said Mr has served on council for six years I tried to he fair and not show favoritism he said No one group deserves privileges more than another The main season I want to serve on council is be cause of the sewage disposal plant Mr said he would not criticize any members of council but added that he had not been happy with the bickering quarreling and personalities ex pressed during the past year He tried to keep his remarks brief and to the point he explained If Mr conducts meetings as he says he will and am elected I shall be happy to serve with him said Mr It is time for ward repre sentation for the six councillors and I will work for this if elect ed gram Speaking of the roads we bounce on in Newmarket Mr Knapton said that the major por tion of this years road and bridges committee budget was spent on maintenance not con struction work To my way of thinking that is money thrown away said Mr Knapton It would be wiser to spend more this year on the con struction of permanent roads and not have high maintenance costs next year and the year after The money that would have been used for this mainten ance work could then be diverted to other projects I am looking forward to next year when the planning board will bring in a zoning bylaw and recommendations regarding annexation Both are needed We must take some of the land on the towns boundaries It is a matter of survival We must have it if Newmarket is to ex pand and we must have it before neighboring municipalities have Newmarket ringed with residen tial development It is my personal opinion that we shall have no great industrial expansion in Newmarket until we show a more friendly atti tude to both the industries al ready located here and prospec tive ones dont mean we should assume a submissive atti tude The taxpayers dont want council to do that but rather to have council work with present and future industrialists Revisions of the towns by laws are needed badly This year we have been working on the building bylaw It has been in force for six years and many parts are antiquated What of the bylaws which were passed or years ago and the amendments to bylaws and the amendments to the amendments This is boring and tedious work but it must be done Regarding new subdivisions I believe that must be made to provide all services paved roads curbs sidewalks and storm and sanitary It has been said that you cant force these costs on new home owners but we cant force them on the present population either After the new homeowners are settled in about two years they will request these services from the town True they will be provided under local improve ment but they must go on the towns debenture debt increas ing it and annual interest payments for the town We cant halt development We cant stop subdividers even though personally we might like stop them You have a duty and a to vote This year you have a good of candidates and it is your duty to go home think about them It is your privilege to go into the booth on Dec and mark your ballot as you wish but first it is your duty consider the candidates There are two thing for a good candidate There must be the desire to do the job and there must be the ability and in telligence to do the job For the first part I want serve on council this coming year am not doing it only for you but for my too Al though we have been here only years this is now my home town For the second I leave that to you whether you think I am fit to do the job ft Michael Over the past seven or eight years I have given a good deal of time to community work as a member of the Library board My will to serve has been dem onstrated amply there I feel it Is time for a change of pace and that my experience fits me to give you service on council In the roughly 25 years since I left college I have been con cerned with financial activities much of which has been associ ated with government depart ments and the administration of various statutes I am prepared and can find the necessary time to do a good honest workmanlike job for you as a member of council I have been disappointed in watching past councils with their bicker ing quarrels and personalities It should be possible for intelli gent men and women to have differences of opinion and yet keep the business moving on the right track I want to see order introduced into the proceedings of council Walter Weaver I immigrated from London nine years ago and came directly to Newmarket I have three children two of whom are 1 tending Stuart Scott school have a sincere desire to do any work for the younger folk I have served four years on the Stuart Scott Home and School executive and the past two years I have been a member of Home and School council executive I am in the electrical utility field I am employed with the Ontario Hydro commission in the capacity of supervisor IT Jack Mr was born and edu cated in Newmarket He was not present to address the meet ing John I shall do my best to provide the best education possible for Newmarket children at not too great a cost It is no good to have too good an education if homes are bankrupt providing it will do my best lo see that the standard of education is raised in Newmarket if am elected PUBLIC SCHOOL BOARD J R Bollons Mr was unable to at tend the nomination meeting be cause of illness He left a sign ed statement which was read by Cochairman Ernie Stefaniuk Mr thanked his spon sors He said he hoped suffici ent candidates for public school board would qualify that an elec tion would be necessary There are six contesting three seats 1 offer my services as a train ed accountant and business ad ministrator said Mr If elected promise to carry out my duties to the best of my ability and will do everything in my power to see that the admin istration of our public schools is carried out fairly and honestly and in accordance with the pub- lie school act Mr concluded by ask ing for the support of the elec tors Earl am a stranger to many of you but have been working in Newmarket for one year and liv ing here the past three months I attended Teacher college and after university training taught school prior to the last war Then I taught the Canadian Le gion sponsored courses and af ter the war senior mathematics and science to veterans I joined the National Employ ment service and am an employ ment man here Through my work I come in contact both with the students in search of work and their prospective employers I hear the tatters requests as the years go by for better skilled men and women I have seen automation come into the indus trial revolution and the Buck Rogers strips become a reality I have come in contact with firms that are doing experimen tal work on interplanetary tra vel and missiles work With this background I feel can be help ful on the board of education If in my small way can help a child in Newmarket continue his education I shall be glad to do that John Mr Macnab has served four Charles K MarDonald Mr MacDonald said be was a newcomer to municipal politics and not certain whether he would stand for election I am not much of a speech maker will be brief said Mr If you me at the polls Ill thank you and if you dont Ill thank you I Jack limn Last year due to the scarcity of nominations here had to be a second election I ran but inn a little late as didnt get in If elected this year I will iiHiniiuiv and cooperatively with other members of council said Mr taxrate is going to climb whether we like it or not All we can do to bring industry to town to take some of the off the home owners will do all that 1 can to help bring new industries here he added TO THE VOTERS OF THE TOWN OF NEWMARKET I humbly solicit your tupport that I may you in council for another
