Page The Newmarket Era and Wot 1S57 AFTERNOON The Common Isabel Inglis MOTOR CITY CHOIR AND BAZAAR I It is always a joy to listen to a group of people who are drawn together by their love of music and whose purpose is to get and give as much pleasure and profit as possible by such an association Of course there is one proviso in the minds of the listeners the choir or chorus must be well trained There was no doubt in anyones mind about the delight we all experienced as we listened to the Motor City Choir of Oah which was here under the auspices of the choir of Trinity United church Mr the choir had a conductor who knew how to bring out the best in the voice under his direction to balance the parts and to blend all into an entity rich in tone rich in blending and true in pilch He had too in very great measure what all conductors lon for the concentrated attention of his chorus Mr Gecn and his choir Were fortunate in having a sympathetic and understanding accompanist in the person of Mr Kelvin James As I have said many times before in this column an accompanisi can give great help or definitely lessen the effect of solo or chorus therefore when we hear good ones we like to pay them tribute It was good to see our Mr Nash singing in the choir with his asso ciates of other years We were delighted with their choice of program numbers suppose it was for the reason that many of them were pleasant re minders of times when we in a similar choir in Their rendition of God Save the Queen was masterly the three following numbers Bene diction Sombre Woods and Eliza beth of England gave the choir chance to display a fine mastery of light and shade and of expres sion We have all I fancy heard choirs sing in a technically per fect manner but which left he listeners cold because the conduc tor and choir had not been to lead us into the innermost beauty of the song Next on the program follower two olos by one of our soprano soloists Mrs Barbara Brown who sang beautifully and The Hills of Grind Mrs Browns voice is flexible and it is a great pleasure to listen to her She responded after both her songs with an encore Her accompanist was Mr Nash and as is usual with his accompaniments blended so exactly with the sing er that one only got the sion of a perfect whole The next two numbers sung by the choir I Hear The Soft Note and gave us a serene beauty of tone which was in marked contrast with the follow ing number The womens voices beautifully modu lated then heard in the Vir gins Lullaby and then we heard the men in Whereer You Walk This was a fine piece of work the enunciation perfect and the quality of tone good The a of the sea was given a fine interpretation This was fol lowed by Barbara Brown singing Hark Hark The Lark and Tif Trout The brilliant uplift of first song was in contrast with the flowing quality of the second All The Things You Are gave us a touch of modern music by the choir and this was followed by the choir which sang magnificent ly Praise Ye The Lord To conclude what every listen er fell was a rare musical treat the choir sang Canada with the original words Archie and re joiced to hear again the real words stately and beautiful for a real national anthem instead of the poor thing it has been reduc ed to Following the concert choir entertained the visiting choir also Trinitys music com- and their wives This gave us a chance to express in person our pleasure in the program to conductor and choir Mr Irving Walker in the ab sence of Trinitys choir president thanked the visitor for a did concert thanked Mrs Brown and Mr Nash for contributing to delightfully to its success and thanked the ladies for the refreshments which refresh- I ed the inner man and gave every- one a chance to talk and enjoy a social evening I must correct an omission here At the conclusion of the program Mr Nash made a little speech of thanks which though brief struck just a chord of pleasure to which everyone responded Rev Duncan White and Mr both treated us to witty speeches that brought the that does everyone good So heres a note of thanks to the two choirs that made the evening success School I was quite proud when given the honor of opening the bazaar held by the pupils of Miss Venn Wice at school bazaar was opened there was a parade through both room dth the children in every var iety of costume For this the Round children of Mrs Youngs room gave the people in Miss room a view of their costume and vice versa The bazaar was in aid of the Red Cross and In this connection I heard the secretary and treas urer reports given with poise and assurance at the request of the president It pleases me to think that when these small people be come adults they will not either refuse offices at a meeting or con duct it with fear and trembling They are going through their no vitiate when they should in their childhood The Afternoon auxiliary Trinity United church wilt meet in the church hall on Thursday Nov at 245
