Week November 4 To 10 3 The Era and Express Thursday Nov ANNUAL PRECHRISTMAS LETS LOOK AT THE OTHER GROUP Oar Readers Write Letters to the editor are always welcome but the names of the writers must he known to the editor SUPERINTENDENT OF YORK COUNTY HOSP MISS THOMAS RESIGNS The Editor May I have the opportunity of replying to the letter of last week written by a reader in regards to doing away with the buses For the information of the writer Of thai letter and anyone else who is interested in this sub ject would like to make it clear that neither I nor anyone els who voted on this matter had any intention of stopping the bus ser vice All we wanted to do was to save the taxpayers money by cutting the subsidy of which the bus line receives of your money nnd mine The writer states be has been paying taxes longer than I have No doubt this may he true I am not denying it If that is the Case he should know how the taxes have Increased and will continue to increase until this kind of business has stopped My suggestion is not to humiliate people through the press but for bun to offer bis services to the town as a candidate for muni cipal office where be will get a first hand view of what is done with taxpayers money Then people who try to do something and about this kind of thing will be appreciated and not criticized When the bus company was granted a 10year franchise by the taxpayers no subsidy was mentioned After operating the line for three years with no op position because of the franchise a subsidy was requested and granted the council and the Ontario Municipal board It is my contention that this subsidy should have been approv ed by a vote of the taxpayers as was the franchise because it is taxpayers money that is being spent it should be approved by ihi people as a money bylaw of a has Another point are we sure there Lillian was not member of council County the time that had an interest in 0P1 resigned her the bus line If there was then position recently for health the granting of the subsidy It for way it was done is wrong should be stopped not only this reason but for the other rea sons I have stated sons She has been succeeded by Miss Irate Miss Sutton is a graduate of Toronto Western hospital Shi joined the staff of York County Every lime a statement read hospital almost six years ago and from the bus company there is was assistant superintendent prioi included a good amount for do- to Miss TJiOmas retirement There is only one bus j Mrs lean has been add operating in town but how many led to the staff She is another buses are we paying depreciation j Toronto Western graduate on This writer believes that the bus line is wrong in operating a free bus service to the shopping centre they are getting paid for it but they are operating it in town on the same routes for which we all are paying through the noso on the subsidy We agree with the writer that the bus service is a good thing for people going to work older people and people with transpor tation but we also believe thai if proper schedules were kept and better service were provid ed even if it meant an increase in fares that the bus line would could pay One other solu tion would be for he manager to drive the bus once in awhile him self and save on expenses I know in other business when it is not paying the town doesnt give them a subsidy and managers jump in and work try and make it pay No man wants to see his business go if there is work to be done that he can do and also cut down his overhead The only idea anyone had the line not operating came from the manager himself who said if the subsidy was stopped the buses would stop its not much statement from a man franchise granted by people and also who is enough to develop and improve the services of the bus by tin- growing development and impu tation of Newmarket live tin- taxpayers a because taxes are going to continue to in Newmarket A Bed Kent Councillor Miss Thomas graduated IM
