Pages from the ors Notebook We must answer Mr Roy Keys letter published last week Mr Keys wrote Councillor Mr letter is given a heading set in large type which has a tendency to suggest it is of some importance Anyone who had time to read this letter before yawning himself to sleep realizes that it was far from im portant Councillor letter was a long one It was a case of pub lishing the whole thing or noth ing because we would not like to edit down a letter from a member of the local govern ment This may sound a bit tongue- incheek to Mr Keys A newspaper is supposed to be a mirror of community life If Keys Is impressed by the unimportance of the words of a member of council we have ac complished part of our job But we suspect that the mem bers of the Lyons Ratepayers association read every word of Councillor letter and enthusiastically made notes in the margins As for the heading in large type that was the result of a newspaper page prob lem A large block of type with a tiny heading has a displeasing From the Files of appearance Besides the letter made a good makeup anchor for the front page What we like about this new ly formed Newmarket- Yacht club is the fact that its members are a bunch of dreamers We are not e p this well known phrase with its usual cynicism We like dreamers Newmarket has been short of dreamers for a long time We saw a set of dream plans for the river area at the south end of Newmarket and around Fairy A member of the Yacht club who is experienced in planning drew up a beautiful sketch on what could be done to make the area a beauty spot for boating camping fishing and possibly swimming Where will you get the mon ey That is the usual question asked by the shortsighted pes simistic onlooker But the members of the yacht club and their followers are not short sighted and they are not pessimistic Enthusiasm is the most important factor which brings success and they have it Already they are accomplish ing things and having fun at the same time Dont forget to stroll down to the Water SI bridge Friday night to see what they are doing at the dam 5 and 50 Years Ago More paving on Yonge St The roadpaving apparatus is at work on the issue of debent ures to complete the new bridge improve the electric- light plant and extend the sys tem of concrete sidewalks All but one voted for it at the meeting How it works It is a signifi cant fact that towns that are the most prosperous their local newspapers and printers the most liberally The solution of this problem is that no town is sufficient unto itself but must reach out for iradp and draw it from the outside world which must become well acquainted with the town and its people for mutual benefit Mr Milne proprietor of the Windsor House Whitby was pleased to meet many old out to lure a new industry are a waste of money This opinion published by the Cana dian Chamber of Commerce was given by- George Ellis director of research for a large bank in the US The source of his information was a recent study of executive attitudes towards industrial development ac tivities of chambers of commerce and other industrial agencies Town officials and chamber of commerce workers in Newmarket frequently discuss possible ways of new industry to the community In the past couple of years there has been a shortage of land for industry here but a survey is being made at the present time with a view to annexing land Presumably Newmarket will want to step up its program to find new industry before long The attitudes of executives of large companies appear to be acquired casually from a variety of sources according to Mr Ellis The most frequently quoted source is the press In his study in New England he found that they repeatedly referred to stories they had read about the textile industry leaving that particular area and the existence of surplus labor and vacant tex tile plants They based their opinions on news events as far back as 1002 Their attitudes having been ac quired over considerable periods of time are likely to change equally slowly It also appears that bad news travels fast and makes a more lasting impression than good news Railroads and banks are used as reliable sources of information As to booklets on the community pro motion sent to the president is stopped by his secretary who throws out per cent Only materials contain ing wanted reference data are retained according to one quote Brochures are useful only on two occasions if they contain factual material which can help company appraise the location and if the company happens to be looking at that particular area that lime In a place like Newmarket we hear the phrase good publicity for the town used most often as an excuse for spending money on conventions entertain ing visiting dignitaries municipal ceremonies advert in year books printing brochures etc Mean while attitudes are formed by what appears in the press And what appears in the press is governed by the actions and words of the community leaders SALVATION ARMY APPEAL Spring is the usual time for the Salvation Army Red Shield appeal but the local campaign was post poned until the fall this year Captain officer in charge of local Army operations suffered an Injury last spring and was not able to organize the drive It is for this reason that the campaign is being held now To date contributions have been good according to Captain The work of the Army is noted not only for its spiritual work but also for Ms practical assistance in community life Family tragedies fires floods wherever there is human need the Salvation Army is present with its spiritual and practical help The community will want to keep the Salvation Army here and can do so by contributing generously to the Red Shield fund BLOOD BANK WILL BE A FIRST Next week the district will get down to serious business in its drive for blood donors at York County hospital The objective a free blood bank is not an easy target to reach The success of the project will mean that York County will have the first hospital in Ontario with an independent free blood bank There are hos pitals with free blood banks but they are operated by the Red Cross Through district newspapers and radio the public now knows more about the need for blood and the large number of donors required to stand by to replenish stocks of whole blood a large donor list is required particularly to provide the rare blood types A donor will feel secure in the knowledge that he will not be required to search for 20 donors in the event thai a transfusion is needed for a member of his family or a friend It is hoped that the end of next week will see at least donors on the list and perhaps more SNOW IS FOR THE POETS Globe And Mail Some sort of consistency will have in Association comes out ones again with its age- old argument that Canadians who buy goods manufact ured abroad are pulling workers out of jobs That argument is fallacious Trade is a twoway business When we buy goods from foreigners we thereby supply them with tin where withal to buy goods from If we stop the importation of their goods we automatically slop the export The only way we could permanently curtail imports without curtailing exports would he to give our goods away Protection for short periods not in crease employment it merely forces our workers til be employed in some industries rather than others and in industries in which and capital arc ew pro ductive than in our export industries Because of the temporary hardship would front sudden removal of tariffs if any of are suggesting any serious tariff reductions It is none the less important to the manufacturers argument for protection has been considered by practically all competent economists since Adam Smith discredited the whole protectionist theory in I HI WEALTH OF NATIONS 180 years ago It well also to remind Mr and the that have to live down the reput ation Hi Conservatives have in the West and in la- said about next weeks paper when a bellow of rage from the back shop derailed his train of thought He swivelled around in time to see Slim Bliggens come pelting down the aisle by the presses followed at head height by a board and threefifths of a deck of cards Slim made the turn at the darkroom just ahead of the board and sauntered over to the bosss desk while Kletch- stalked into view to recover his missile Sorehead he muttered glancing over his shoulder Well said the boss I see that the West Charles Street Club passed a resolu tion concerning kibitzers Slim shrugged Some people have no sense of gratitude or appreciation for anyone that trios to help them he observ ed been watching that tournament for three weeks now and K letch was get ting such a heating that I decid ed to give him the benefit of experience and offer a little advice And he didnt appreciate it said the boss Only after he lost again admitted Slim tried to con vince him that the main reque st of a good player is the to hoar his losses cheerfully and smile in the face of defeat but letch just isnt cheerful when it conies to money so when he reached for the hoard in a manner that indicated that ho wasnt planning on moving his pegs I thought ld come down and see how you wort getting along Dedicated card players are a queer lot Slim said and whether theyre playing poker or bridge The boss snorted What do you know about bridge Its a highly intellectual game and its first requirement Is finished Slim If what Ive seen is any Indication There are all kinds of card fiends but bridge play ers are the worst Now I dont claim to know as much about bridge as I do about he continued in a- Ive seen only one at game at the Corners Bridge and Trap Shooting Club hut a person who naturally observant can learn a lot just by watching Alright said the boss who a kind of bridge minnow himself lets hear your ideas Well now a I recall it how- the is played he answered You get four people around a table for a starter If its four women the game starts with the woman on the left turning to her left or right she seems to have a free choice and asking her if she saw Mrs So and Sos dress She answers isnt dreadful Can you agin anyone her age trying to wear thing then tie table 9 to looks icy and say I thought we came here to play bridge This seems to be the signal for the second half of the gaint so they take a fleck of carda and divide it up among he players There one who is too stupid to play his own hand they call him or her a dummy theyre not even polite about it Boy you talk about kibitzing in a card game If anyone tried that in cribbage not even the other per son opinion but just going ahead and playing this card or that whichever they liked The boss waved him into silence Lets skip the torn analysis Whats next The next part i a Imlo tricky said Slim Each play er except the dummy throws B card into the middle of table One says ha and says damn and the one who says ha picks up the wad and drops it in front of him white the one who said damn sort of like a parent who swallowed straight castor oil to show the kids that it really tastes good and says nice play Maybe its like Snap where the one who yells the right word quickest wins the pot Then it starts again Only this time when one player throws out a card the one across the table kicks him If he misses and kicks the tab leg instead I guess he loses a point because partner glar es and he turns pink especially if the coffee spill Maybe costs an extra point for Spitting coffee This goes on until one le has more of deck than the other and if they gel all the cards one and other sits and glares at other Then the thud part start continued Shin This for the players who didnt get any cards and they have to play the game again any hut there never seems 10 be a general agreement to what was or should have en done Theyre dishonest too They pull on the others then brag about how many they away with How if anyone tried those in the games that goes on behind the Cut tin Cor nets pool room the boys would him to step ouUidt a minute and The boss waved him off another try And thing the loer the re said the related Ihey art if
