often referred to as public nuisance number one to the vacationists While a few people are seemingly unaffected the majority can be made most miserable by an encounter with it it is a vine which has alter nate leaves each of which is di vided into three distinct leaflets usually waxy in appearance two to four inches in length and pointed at the tip The leaves turn red or yellow in the fall While some other vines also have leaves composed of three leaflets the field crop branch of the Ontario department if agriculture advises that in to avoid contact with poison vy it is best to keep away from vine or low growing shrub this type of leaf Semishaded areas such a long the edges of wood lots lose to fence lines or on tin of trees are ail place- poison ivy may be found can and does grow in should be left to grow up in their own environment warns District Forester Wilson of the Ont ario department of lands and forests following the shooting by game officials of a cross and dangerous buck deer in a summer resort area For a time officers carried on a deer hunt almost eaual to a gangster chase after reports that a deer had chased several persons into their cottages savagely at tacked a woman with its horns and front feet and knocked her to the ground A man also was attacked by the big buck and es- jcaped only by crawling under a cottage Warnings about the deer were broadcast over local radio sta tions and Fish and Wildlife Sup ervisor Gordon D Bute veteran with four conservation officers entered the rough rock and bush country east of Buck- horn village and advanced to the attack The buck was found near an unoccupied cottage and when it showed fight one of the offic ers shot it Said District Forester Wilson Investigation has shown this to be the result of one more of those unfortunate cases where an in nocent baby wild animal was car ried out of the bush and taken away from the natural care of the mother Raised by humans such animals soon lose the ability to forage for themselves in their na tural state and become totally de pendent on some person for their food and shelter Never again are they able to live in their natural environment After reaching adult stage and maturity man wild animals raised in captivity become cross and ugly tempered There are many cases where persons have been severely injured or even killed by wild animals raised in captivity We believe the deer in this case to be one which was captur ed as a fawn in rough bush coun try during the summer of It was raised on a farm and in re cent years became illtempered and dangerous Our officers were told that this buck had in jured several people and nearly killed its boss on two occasions It was taken to a public park where it savagely attacked the keeper twice It was then taken lo bush country and released It is contrary to law to keep a wild animal in captivity Mr Wil son pointed out and added The place for wild animals is in the bush unless they are kept in a 5
