report of the Historical Society By Jean One group of pioneers about whom little has been written is that of the Fourth Estate the editors and proprietors of the little weekly newspapers which flourished and failed with such rapidity during the early period of our history Information about them is scant and full of contradictions and unresolved mysteries but out of the confu sion there emerges a story full of interest one which throws a revealing sidelight on this facet of pioneer life One sees their desire to main tain a dignified high moral tone tn direct their readers religious thinking but at the same time a strong sense of their duty to point out the faults and misde meanours of their political op ponents with the greatest can dour At the same time they were continually plagued by the diffi culty of collecting the subscrip tions owing them One editor gave vent to his feelings by pub lishing a quotation from one Josh Billings as follows What Is An Editor An editor is a mule whose bizness is to investigate a He writes editorials grinds out poetry inserts and weddings sorts manuscripts keeps a wastebasket blows up the devil steals matter fites other peoples battles ed in 1703 in Newark followed Governor Simcoe to the new town of York on the shore deal at first For a time Henry worked with Mr Gur- on the Gore Gazette at caster From to at least the Rev Peterson the fa ther was in Markham where his son published a small newspaper Henry Williams son another Henry William wrote in a let ter to Teefy of Richmond Hill in My father I believe did print a small sheet for a few months in more I think for his own private amuse ment than anything else He came up to Berlin Waterloo immediately after leaving and printed and published The Can ada Museum in German for many years It is reported that he returned from a visit Jo the United States in bringing with him the heavy press and other printing material and arriving finally in Berlin after ah arduous journey by canal boat and ox team The Canada Museum begun soon af ter was said to be the first Ger manlanguage paper published in Upper Canada and also the first paper established west of castcr Mr Peterson was also the pro prietor of the first paper pub lished in Guelph the and Guelph Herald He forsook the publishing field when his new duties as Registrar of the County of Wellington took him to Guelph in There he remained until his death in 1359 New Era Newmarket incorporated as a village just one hundred years ago in was the first settle ment in York County outside of Toronto to support a weekly newspaper The New Era began publication on February The proprietor was G Porter a printer born in Norwich Eng land who had come to Canada about nine years before when times were hard in London He had begun a new life as a store clerk in Newmarket and had ad vanced until he became proprie tor Then he added a printing plant and began to publish a fourpage newspaper devoted to news agriculture science morality and amusement Apparently he did not consider of Lake Ontario During the next his new enterprise a success for 30 years there were other at tempts to found newspapers some more successful than others The Observer lasted from to the Weekly Register from to 1826 the famed Colonial Advocate was printed by William Lyon Mackenzie from to the United Empire Loyalist lasted for three years from to the Canadian Freeman from 1825 to the Christian Guardian had the longest life of the early pa pers from well into the 20th century From on more weeklies were begun more of them succeeded and in To ronto saw its first daily paper the Royal Standard As far as we can discover the first newspaper published in the county outside of Toronto is one whose name has been forgotten It was printed in the little settle ment of sometime around by Henry William Peterson but when he died his son could find no copy of the paper among his fathers belong ings Henry William was the son of a Lutheran preacher Rev John Dietrich Peterson of in the Kingdom of Han over In when the hoy was two years old his father emi grated to America By the time Henry William was out of his teens he had already edited and published several periodicals both political and religions in the states of Pennsylvania and Delaware About the Petersons came to Canada and like many other settlers moved about a for Melbourne Aus tralia In he celebrated his birthday in New Zealand In an interview printed at that time in the Otago Daily Times he said of his news paper venture in Newmarket It was not a very wise thing to do They were not a literary people and they never paid In spite of his gloomy views however the Era did not de cline and die In Mr Jack son became sole owner and the paper remained in the Jackson name until Jack son was a Liberal and for many years the Era was regarded as the party paper for that district Robinsons History of York tells us that in how ever the Era opposed the Liberal nominee and the party began a new paper of their own The History of describes the Newmarket Era it changed its- name in as one which though Liberal tendencies is Although it was the first weekly paper to issue from the smaller municipalities of York it is also one of the halfdozen still being published today In a second weekly began publication in Newmarket the Canadian Independent It must have flourished for little is to be learned of it It is classi fied in the Myers direc tory as which may de note that it was a religious pub lication of the Sentinel On December a third weekly newspaper made its ap pearance in the village of New market This is amazing when we remember that the village had not yet been incorporated The North York Sentinel under A way devoted to politics literature public im provement and general intelli gence We find no further trace of this newspaper after There is at memorial to in ExpressHerald One further newspaper the Newmarket Express and Weekly Advertiser began in the late was known in as the Ex pressHerald of Newmarket and Sutton and finally was incor porated with the Newmarket Era as the Era and Express in Just as the earliest weekly in Newmarket was the one to sur vive so it is with We may expect Mr Petersons small attempt as more of a hob by than a business enterprise In this settlement was a village of from eight to nine hundred inhabitants- It was not incorporated until but its life began on July with the publication of the Markham Economist It too had four pages and claimed to be a family newspaper devot ed especially to the interests of the country For years its publisher was David a member of one of the earliest families of Christian had set tled there in Like many of the early publishers David Ree took a prominent part in the affairs of his municipality In when he chose to run for election to the Legislative Council of Canada we find him being sharply criticized because his newspaper office had accept ed the contract for the township printing while he himself was reeve of the township He must have been a man of high tion for he was nevertheless sue- In the election In he became a member of the Senate of Canada On June the Economist was suspended The editor explained the situation in the columns of his paper as follows It is- not now intended that its publica- shall be discontinued but that a recess shall be allowed until all outstanding dues are collected It will then be issued again it may be in another but it is certainly intended to con- tinue its publication From October 25 to December 1 of year it was replaced by the Weekly Ruralist and mist a journal of agriculture education temperance the arts etc This was a small four- 1 page issue replaced on Decem ber by a larger format It interesting to note that the paper was sent free of charge to Min- 1 of religion This Rural Economist its name varied great ly from time to time apparently ceased on May 31 where- 1 upon on June of the same year the Economist so- publication Markham had one other week ly during the 19th century the Sun It began in under George J who was also at one time the postmaster of village It was a Con servative paper but in it united with the Economist to form the Economist and Sun which still serves that area today Richmond Hill Although there was a small settlement at Richmond Hill be- fore it was not until that a newspaper was printed there It began on June as the York Ridings Gazette and Richmond Hill Advertiser with William Trudgen as manager Hi is paper also had four paces and was sometimes known as the British Tribune and York Rid ings Gazette It seems to have ceased temporarily on December 4 We next catch sight of it on November when Alexander Scott takes it over and on December launches It on a larger- sized page under the new name of York Commonwealth and Richmond Hill Advertiser On April there is a fur- change when the village publication became known as the York Herald and Richmond Hill Advertiser The Issue of April 1359 extends its sphere of influence calling it the York Herald and Scarboro York King and Whitchurch Advertiser Whatever iis exact title the York Herald a lofty aim will bestir themselves and assist in increasing our circulation All we ask is a fair chance Send on then the names and the cash The effect will be magical The effect was that the York Herald continued publication until Richmond Hills present week ly the Liberal began in with James Mann as publisher It was advertised as an inter esting reform journal circula tion it should be in every family We were interested to see that on August 8 the Liberal carried an account of the annual meeting of the York Pi- j and Historical Society in Toronto The Owen Sound Ad vertiser approved of the paper because it comes out fair and square on the right side of poli tics In with J A Sturgeon Stewart as editor the Liberal claimed to be a first class local journal devoted to local Can adian foreign and general news and politics and interesting literature on all subjects and treating editorially on all the liv ing topics of the day ever taking as its motto In essentials unity in nonessentials liberty in all things charity Page The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday July H QUI BOUT THAT By RALPH TE or so loue OH SUE WHAT A SHAME AND TO THINK YOU HE WENT All THAT DISTANCE WAS A printed in 1856 by the North York Sentinel The latest num ber in the Provincial Archives is dated November but there is nothing to indicate that this was the end It may have fallen victim to the difficulties encountered by Mr Porter Newmarket had at least three other weeklies before 1900 The Courier began publication late in under M Binns It was a fourpage issue published in the Conservative interest In however it was purchased by Thomas and a Mr Oliver At this point the Courier changed both its name and its political complexion becoming the North York Reformer This was at the time when the New Era previously a staunch Liberal paper refused its support and the Liberals were forced to acquire a paper of their own The History of York gives a Rood share of credit to this reorgan ized paper for the Reform party victory In the district at the time of the provincial election in and the continuing increase af ter that date of support for the Liberals In the riding of North York At the end of Thomas became the sole proprie tor The North York Reformer itrtTH to haw publication found to contain the latest and most important foreign and pro- vincial news and markets and the greatest
