township farmer attended the council meeting July and voiced aversion to the newly passed by law calling township taxes to be paid by August 15 He claim ed it was a hardship on the farm as it was just at that time of year they were taking the hay off and had no money in We were never asked to pay before December and I dont think it is a fair deal he told council Taxes are going up plenty without a penalty going on that early He cited the cases of East and Scott townships re the taxes are not due until nearly the end of the year Councillor William King asked Clerk Irwin Winch to explain to Mr Thompson the reason coun cil had decided to call for earlier due date on taxes Mr Winch gave reasons of bank costs for money borrowed hi meet township expenses until the taxes did come in He claimed it was a better way to finance to get what taxes they could as early as possible Mr WiikIi aUo explained that the new municipal laws act out for them follow called for the sale of landi on which taxes re mained unpaid In the case of unoccupied lands they could be after taxes were one year in arrears ami occupied land three years In both instances there was a period of one year in which to redeem at a penalty Mr Thompsons theory is that If you go to the hank to borrow money which you have to pay by August I ft you have to tell about yourself from the cradle to the grave Former Councillor Cecil Pros ier a fanner gave his two cents worth by adding Pretty soon theyll want a blood test As an elderly man Mr Thomp son gave some departing advice to council You should go through Ufa one step at a time Think before you step This one lime I think youre going in the wrong are thousands of acres not being tilled Sons are going away to earn twice as much as they could by staving on the farm their wives are going out to work earn money too Why add more distress Reeve Hoy Pollock told him Even if we were convinced which we are not we could do nothing about it today PINE ORCHARD Mrs If of Aurora township reeve Roy Pollock told the Era and Express Monday evening that two anonymous phone calls had been received by the Ontario Good Roads Association com plaining that there is no use tendering for road contracts in the township because council knows before tenders are open ed which one will be accepted Reeve Pollock said he was told of this by district municipal engineer for the On tario Department of Highways who insisted on attending a spe cial meeting of council Monday afternoon when tenders were opened for completion of paving on the Metropolitan road This most certainly isnt the practice of this council and is an unwarranted reflection on the townships method of doing busi ness Mr Pollock said Reeve Pollock and Deputy- Reeve Clark Martin said told council the Good Roads As also has done welfare work among its own members and in directly had done a job township might have had to do The need for help is urg ent said President Cohen with the grounds regarding the finan
