covenant for chil dren will be based on the Declar ation of Geneva one of the leg acies of the old League of Nations which has retained its timeliness and validity- Tha Declaration of Geneva says that men and women of all nat ions recognizing that mankind owes to the child the best that it has to give declare and accept as their duty that beyond and a- all considerations of race nationality and be put in a pos ition to earn a livelihood and must be protected against every form of exploitation The child must be brought up in the consciousness that its tal ents must be devoted to the ser vice of its One of the vital differences be tween the and the League of is that today the world organization possesses more ex plicit tools social economic and political as well as technical and a greater sophistication in the use of these tools The UNs declaration while basing itself on the principles of the Geneva document spells out in much more specific detail just how these principles shali be ap In answer to the question Mrs said there was great room for im provement Children will read anything they get their hands and eyes on she said It is important that what is available is good Envir onment plays an important role If there is help interest and gui dance in the home before the child reaches school the reading habit will be wellformed But there are many children who have not had such encourage ment We shouldnt be satisfied with the volume added Mr Eldndge We must consider the type of story related in the book and the type of language in which the story is phrased The panel disagreed as to what could be done about children who dont read or make a poor select ion of their reading materials Mr felt little could be done by the librarian or teacher as the pattern was set before the child arrived at school Mrs Ja and the other members dis agreed A librarian can do missionary work at any age level provided she is trained and has a proper selection of books said Mrs You cant force children to read added Mr Jones You can expose them to good books and through encouragement and ex ample guide them to the enjoy ment of reading School Libraries Mr raised the quest ion as to why a scarcity of books exists in the public schools and the town library J Bell a member of the groups as the Home and School seem logical supporters of a school library It has been said that when books in the library More are being purchas ed slowly but there are addit ions being made to the stock More could be done to circu late the books now in the libr ary she added recommending puppet shows and a regular story hour as ways of creating more in terest in the juvenile section of the library The panel agreed that should own books and that it was unwise for parents to depend en tirely on school and library sourc es The members also that reading aloud to children helped to interest them in reading for themselves Reading aloud is part of the lender loving care to be shou- on children said Mr ler But it is as important to have thee read to you as it is for you to read to them lit added The need for more money was stressed when the panel discuss ed ways in which reading could be increased in the town It costs money provide trained staff for a library as well as to stock it with books Sources of additional revenue were listed They included donat ions from private individuals
