SHOT WHEN COMPANION SLIPS John Houston was shot in the right arm by his companion Ern est Anthony Ogle 20 Oakburn Cres Willowdale They were hunting groundhogs on the sixth concession of King township north of the Aurora ear ly last Saturday evening when the accident took place Police said Ogle slipped and fell and his 22 calibre rifle discharg ed a bullet which entered the arm glanced into the and lodged in the rib cage Houston was taken to Toronto East Gen eral hospital where his condition was reported satisfactory on Sun day evening Police said the catch on the rifle was not fastened at the Mrs Jackson had beautiful dress on the display rack The littlest lady was Bil lings months wearing a dain ty white organdy covered with red dots and smocked high bod ice It was made by her mother Mrs George Billings Miss Hunter one of the original members of Kingcrafts smocking group organized seven years ago told how smocking originated in England centuries ago and how learned the art what kind of materials arc best to use and the part design and color play in producing this beau tiful There is no limit to the use of smocking and is considered one of the simplest of all types of needlework Miss Hunter said It is rewarding fascinating and re laxing work and on dresses for children makes them distinctive and dainty When Helen first started to smock she thought it was simply a matter of gathering the materi al and using a few stitches in bright colors to make a pattern After learning the three basic stitches outline cable and wave lines and knowing how to cen tre the pattern and use the de corative stitches she soon discov ered like others of her group that this lovely craftsmanship is an art and lends itself to variations with perfection as the pass word Mrs Glenn Sawyer the smock ing convener demonstrated the use of the gathering and dotting machine to start a lamp shade Mrs McLatchey was for teaching the workers how to put the garments together and the importance of expert sewing The smockers use the best of patterns and can transpose these into original interpretations suit able to the nature and color of the foundation material the childs natural coloring and what contrasts produce the best effect Smocked doll outfits baby nighties and little boy outfits are among the types of work done by WILL TAKE PICTURES Barry W a 1 a First Class Scout and troop leader of the First King group is working on badges to attain his Queens Scout category before he sets out for the Scout Jamboree in Eng land World troops there will honor the founder of scouting movement Lord BadenPowell Barry will take a movie camera with him and if possible a 35 mm camera When he returns to King City he will show the pic tures and lecture on what took place at the Jamboree In this way all who are supporting his trip which is an honor to the King community will become informed on the momentous scouting occasion Miss Hunter showed a lovely smacked dress made by a father for his meeting of the garden group convened now by Mrs George Somers will hold a sale of annual and perennial plants at Kingcrafts House on May 22 at the next general meeting It was also decided that two craft sales 1 d be held one next Christmas and one in Thus a fund could be established to provide more instruction for the various groups The Discovery of Design and the Joy of Hand Weaving a text
