and Express March 1957 ertilizer Spray Farm Yields When on of the members of County Soil Crop Association asked a at the Seed Fair last Week liquid fertilizers Agricultural Repre sentative suggested that those in terested at his office for in formation J Mr has received the following report from Professor Richards head of the Soils Department Ontario Agricultural for release to our farm farmers have been ask ing about the merits of spraying liquid fertilizers on the foliage of field crops Does foliage feeding with nitrogen potassium and pho sphorus increase crop yields Is foliage feeding a practice that the farmer should be using on his own farm To answer the questions complete liquid fertilizers con taining nitrogen phosphorus and potassium were sprayed on corn and wheat These tests were conducted by the Department of Soils Ontario Agricultural Coll ege over a number of years Results of studies under care fully controlled conditions show that although many plants are capable of absorbing mineral ele ments through the leaves frequ ently repeated applications would be necessary to meet the mineral requirement of most plants plants are grown in well fertiliz ed soils they are usually able to the necessary kind and quantity of minerals required for satisfactory plant growth Spraying liquid fertilizer on crops that had already received an ample application of dry fertil izer did not increase yields Liqu id fertilizer applied to corn foliage gave no increase in yield either with or without pre vious application of dry fertilizer No yield- increase due to foliar treatment on oats was obtained in at The small increase due to foliar treatment on wheat not sufficient to pay the cost of the spray materials Foliar spray applied to potatoes at the Muck Research Station Bradford in increased yield Because of cost it is not pra ctical to attempt to meet all the plant food requirements of crops by foliar application It is very difficult to apply adequate of the major elements nit rogen phosphorus and potassium because there is a limit to the mount that adheres to the foliage From the results of investigational work conducted at the Ontario Agricultural College spraying of corn oats and wheat with liquid fertilizer does not appear to be a practical method of fertilizing these crops Some soils in Ontario are deficient in elements required by plants in only very small quan tities For example a number of soils are deficient in boron The plants require only a small of this element and spray ing plants with a solution contain ing boron is an effective way of correcting the deficiency In this case and for most trace elements the plant needs are small and en ough of the element is absorbed through the leaves to improve plant growth Experiments conducted at with liquid fertilizer ap plied to the soil indicated that the liquid fertilizer gave as good re sults as dry fertilizer provided the same amount of plant food was contained in each form of fer tilizer and similar methods of placement were used Strikes Spares Charles Cobb Ralph were Friday night scor ing pacesetters Reg ran a stringy followed by Art West lake Cobb 671 Ted Heather Ron Hester
