KESWICK MAN Fishermen on Cooks Bay a week ago poked their heads out of their fish huts to see what was making the noise What they saw was a scoot a combination snowmobile and hy droplane skimming over the ice at speeds of to miles per hour kicking up a cloud of snow The scoot is owned by Joe Dun Toronto and was built by Crate and Sons boat builders at Keswick at a cost of It is like a snowmobile in that it is driven by an airplane motor and propellor and has a closed compartment for passeng ers The runners are flush with the body instead of being six inches or one foot below Also the scoot may be used on the ice in water or on deep snow It can skip from ice to water and back onto ice without a blimp Crate built the craft from a photograph A spare motor from Scabe aircraft powers the five passenger scoot Lloyd Crate has had the scoot up to speeds of 65 miles per hour but hampered by drifting snow and high winds has only reached miles per hour He hasnt had a chance to test it on water
