pub- it is available on the librarys shelf and how it is kept track of after that Perhaps you are more con cerned with practical suggestions for ways and means of increas ing the reading materia in the towns public library You as an individual or a member of an organization would like to know w you can help fill the empty The answers to these questions others will be given when the Newmarket Friends of the Library association holds a char ter meeting in the library on Wednesday March 6 at p m They will be provided by no less an authority than Miss Mary Silverthorn who teaches book selection to future librar ians attending the University of Toronto Library school Miss was born and educated in Calgary Alberta She graduated from the Willing Workers will meet on Wednesday March at Merchant on Tues day Miss Marilyn returned home on Saturday after being a patient in York County hospital Newmarket for a week A number from here attended the skating carnival on Saturday and Sunday Mrs Neil visited her daught er in Newmarket on Tuesday Mrs Walter Thompson and Mrs Alden Winter spent Friday in Woodbridge visiting their parents Mr and Mrs Herb of Alberta and received her MA in Library Science from the University of Illinois Miss Silverthorn worked for awhile in the Calgary Public li brary She taught for two years in the Carnegie Libary school and is at present an associate professor at the Uni versity of Toronto Library school where she conducts courses on the selection and use of books and other library ma terials for both adults and teen agers She is president of the Ontario Library association Since book selection is her spe cialty Miss Silverthorn has chosen Books for Our Library as the topic of her talk Miss will lead a discus sion period following her talk Charter Meeting This is the first Friends of the Library association to be formed in Ontario There are many similar groups in the United States and there is one in Van couver It will be at the meeting on March 6 that the local group will be organized officially and everyone will have an oppor tunity of becoming charter mem bers We want everyone interested in our towns library to feel wel come said the originator of the idea locally Mrs Donald Downey We hope there will be many people who will want to become charter members The response to the pre-organiz- ation work has been encourag ing Mrs Downey said the group regretted this meeting falls on the same night as Open House at the towns public schools She invited parents and teachers to feel free to come to the meeting after Open House Mr and Jewitt and Keith had Friday dinner with Mrs Murray Mr and Mrs attend ed the funeral of his brother-in- law Mr Stewart in Toronto on Monday Mr and Mrs Howard Pine Orchard and Mr and Mrs and Roger egates attended Ontarios first Provincial Rural Leadership Forum at Prudhommes Garden Centre from Febru ary 17 to 23 Each county and district in the province had the opportunity of selecting two delegates to attend The sponsoring provincial organ izations also sent a limited num ber of delegates The forum was sponsored by six Ontario farm organizations and the Ontario Department of Agriculture and the Ontario Department of Edu cation Since there is a great need for informed and capable leaders to help rural people face the new problems in their organizations and in their communities this leadership forum was set up to give them the opportunity to study and discuss needs and problems of Ontarios rural population The delegates had the oppor tunity to study and practise basic principles and procedures that will enable them to work more effectively in their local organ izations and communities and to help promote the best in com munity life The forum activities were
