introduced on January by Councillors Bert Kent and George Haskett was considered on Monday night Strong oppo sition against any action that might lead to liquor and beer made available in town was voiced by nine delegations Provincial Right Referring to these petitions Mr Kent said that when a slat matter was under discussion at council there was a big audi ence but few were present for a nomination meeting He argued that in a democracy one had the right not only of freedom of speech but the right to pass a law and to enforce It Under the pro vincial government the people in Ontario have the right to vote on this subject every three years The last vote was held in dont drink beer said Mr Kent I will takea drink of liquor the same as almost every one ministers included He was booed by members of the audi ence This resolution has no bearing on who wants liquor or who will drink it All it does is it gives the people of Newmarket the opportunity to vote on the question and decide for them- Minister Against Mr Kent said he had received seven calls on the topic five for and two against One of these was from Rev Aiken and he held Up my line for 35 minutes said Council clerks office regarding any re- bylaws The clerk handed me two cheques advising that they were payment for sitting on the court of revision Mr informed council by letter In a joking manner Mr Brooks said it was not legal but on checking with the Assessment Act I find this is no joke Section 61 states that it is illegal for a member of council to receive pay for sitting on the court of revision Mr Wrightman explained Earned Money have no doubt in my own mind that I have earned this mon ey he continued but I cant with a clear conscience accept the taxpayers money if the payment is illegal It appears under Sect ion 61 of the Assessment Act that it would not be correct for me to accept payment said Mr Wri ghtman as he handed a cheque for 60 to the clerk Lets have a party quipped one Mr Gladman added These pie have earned their money How many members of coun cil sat on the court of revision Were they all paid or just Mr asked Councillor Bert Kent The mayor replied that there were five All were paid Reeve Deputy- Reeve Violet Mac aught on Councillors Alex Alex Hands and Robert Wonch are members of the court of revision dont want a penny of the money unless it is proper for me Around Town By Local Observer There cant be too many families of Scottish origin in Newmarket commented one of the public school principals this week who is a Scot himself On Robbie Burns day we had one of the teachers play Lang the opening exer cises The children just stood there and didnt attempt to sing When we asked the grade one class the name of the selec tion one child said Away in a Manger In another class a youngster suggested it was Can adas new national anthem the principal added This Scot could have been ex cused if he had agreed with his bard Its hardly in a bodys To keep at times being sour Stopping Building Permits For Sobel Subdivision Condemned By Councillor had introduced the subject at last weeks meeting It is definitely legal to bring up such a resolution Mr Kent continued Each member of council represents the taxpayers of Newmarket They should rep resent them and not worry about the next years elections Mr said that support of the motion before council did not mean one was in favor of li quor outlets in the town All it indicated he said was that one favored giving the people the op portunity to vote on the matter It gave them the chance to say what they wanted he explained Peoples Choice If the people want the vote they should have a petition argued Councillor Lome That takes the onus off council I dont see why members of coun cil should be put on the spot The residents of Newmarket are en titled to the same privileges as the other residents of the pro vince but if they want the vote they should request it If the vote Is held and passed parking will be a problem Mr added If the liquor store and brewers warehouse come to town they will probably be located at the shopping cen ter and that wont help the mer chants I am not a teetotaler I take a Aurora chamber meet with success in their organizing efforts here On Tuesday night six from Aurora met with interested young men in Newmarket to discuss the possibility of establishing a simi lar group in town Headed by Aurora President George Wilkinson the group in eluded Doug Harrison the imme diate past president Don Kitcly also a past president Bud Gilbert external vicepresident Doug Fi sher who is vicepresident in the national organization and a candi date for the next national presi dency and Gordon Lee secretary of the Aurora branch The Aurora group has been working on the establishment of a chamber here for the past year Spade work in Newmarket was carried out by Jack McCarnan who attended the Aurora Jaycees public speaking course and has been present at several of their dinner meetings It looks good so far com mented President Wilkinson At the next meeting which will be held in the town hall Wednesday evening Feb a temporary chairman and an organizational committee will be set up Two weeks later there will be a final organizational meeting to adopt a constitution and elect officers If all proceeds according to plan the charter will be presented about April Speakers from the Aurora group stressed that it was a young mans organization with members between and 35 years of age and that it was not a service club case which came to public atten tion late in when a building program on a former section of Andrew Watson farm was without approval for a residential subdi vision At that time it was ex plained that a plan had been put on the property many years ago and so this development was not a subdivision A subdivision control bylaw was passed by council This re quired application for approval TO BUILD GAS STATION AT CORNER Imperial Oil plans to build a onebay service station at the corner of Eagle St and Yonge St Newmarket The station will be constructed where an old burnedout residence was de molished last week The com pany has let the tender for im mediate construction by Mat- speck Construction Toronto that it was not the duty of councillors to stand by their own convictions but to represent the ratepayers of Newmarket He said there were 260 names on the petitions presented at council meeting opposing liquor for the town That is or per cent of the votes at the last election The discussion on the petition versus a resolution by council was best expounded in the edi torial in last weeks Era and Ex press he added Each member of council should vote in what ever way he feels the people of Newmarket would want him to vote concluded Mr Councillor Gladstone who was absent from last weeks meeting when the original discus sion arose said he favored resolu tion by council as the voting is entirely secret That is the com pletely democratic way of handl ing the question he said for you have a a m ballot when you have a petition Wont Show Feelings It seems that those who want liquor are afraid to come out and show their feelings commented DeputyReeve Violet on I never took a drink and never will she added relating her experience as a Sunday school teacher and church worker There has been a lot of talk about a liquor store and brewers warehouse bringing business to Newmarket Mrs MacNaughton said It is a well known and es tablished fact that Newmarket is one of the most prosperous towns in the province of Ontario It would be a terrible thing if we have to sacrifice our young people or put temptation in the way of those who are not strong willed to bring business to town she said Get It Settled Councillor asked was not necessary and it should not be necessary for them to council to call for a plebis cite dont want liquor in the town If this resolution Is passed shall go into the booth and vote against having a liquor More and brewers warehouse in town but I say lets have the vote and get it settled he argued I was brought up In a home where family prayers and Bible reading were a daily practice said the reeve I respect temper ance but I feel this Is a question for the people to settle If per cent of the voters had signed a petition council could do nothing but authorize a plebiscite even if members of the clergy were coun cillors In this vote council is not saying we should have liquor in the town What it is doing is submitting it to the people or them to decide I was elected to go by the wishes of people I am anxious to get this question settled and to let the people of the town decide what they want I will vote to hold a plebiscite in Newmarket but when go into the polling booth I against liquor in Newmarket he explained Against Plebiscite I dont think as far as con sumption is concerned it will make much difference if we have these outlets in the town said the mayor Bradford Is only minutes drive away But I find myself more in sympathy with Mr Choppins views I must vote tonight not so much by my own inclination as by what I feel the people want me to do My first duty is to the people who put me here and I feel they would expect me to support the temper ance side I feel the plebiscite will be a useless expense added Mr Gladman A recorded vote was called for by the mayor explained at that time No Work No Permits Mr Wrightman outlined the work that should be done in the area by the and said that council had agreed to issue the six building permits if and when the work was done It has not been done so no building permits should be issued he ar gued Problems in the area included the connection a road with Davis Drive so that the ditch was filled in on Davis Drive No Newmarket Centennial committee was not ac cepted when presented to council on Monday night The resignation was prompted by a misunderstanding of what Mr duties were to be on the committee and the
