ful thing for it gives such an im pression of permanency a wor ld in which so few things are per manent I had heard that Newmarket Womens Institute members were preparing for such an event but hardly expected to be present As it turned out Mrs our president was unable to attend so it fell to my lot much to my delight to have on opportunity to go with our secretary Mrs Geo rge Smith who was also accom panied by her young son who was to sing We found a well filled hall and it was pleasant to see some faces which since the North York dis trict was divided we do not see all district annuals now The business part of Newmar kets meeting quickly dispos ed of by the president Mrs John Hodge Then Mrs the secretary read some very inter esting letters from former mem bers who were unable to attend These all expressed the pleasure it had been to work with the Newmarket Institute and their pride in its accomplishments Then Mrs Hodge called on Clark Smith and he sang very sweetly Bless This House Clark has a lively little voice full of promise His accompaniment was played by his teacher Mrs Gene Cane The principal speaker of the af ternoon was Mrs Elton Arm strong Her task a formidable one to give a resume of the New markets achievements in their fifty years of life My vord that it was well done will be echoed by those who heard her Her talk had a little prolo gue it was what life can do to us harden us or soften us make us givers or takers to sum it up it can make us or break us Its up to wc meet it Then she read the minutes of the first meeting and one or others the small beginning from which so much resulted The achievements in war time when a pair of socks went into every box overseas keep ing going during the depression and the constant helpful efforts in all good causes through the years One achievement of which she spoke glowingly was the Rest Room It had been thought of a good while before it finally came into being but it has prov ed a boon to tired country and a place where a light lunch can be secured Even with some help from the districts and council it is an item that looms each year Mrs Armstrong also spoke of the tremendous growth of the In stitute at home and in other lands and its far reaching influ ence for goodwill and fellowship At representatives of many nations will meet and dis cuss their problems and achieve ment Mrs Armstrongs speech was a challenge to all the Insti tutes represented there to live up to our motto For home and country and the Mary Stewart Collect I think every WI mem ber there felt at the conclusion of Mrs Armstrongs that they had grown in Mature he- cause they members of the WJ Not having taken notes my write up can follow no set patt ern so Ill speak of things as they come to me heard piano trio by pupils of Mrs Cane Harry Buck ler Clarence and John I lodge They played the and its always de light to hear boys perform Then the Charter members Mis Charles Levis Mrs Chess- Interment ley and Mrs j cemetery so the past presidents Mrs Stan ley Janes Mrs Mrs I Watson Mrs Armstrong Mrs Mitchell Mrs Mrs Campbell Mrs A Mrs Mane and Mrs Smith present me men called on Mrs come forward and present to each charier member and past president a beautiful corsage This Mrs did in a that made the little ceremony a very personal thing to each so honor ed She told of when the New market took up first aid and site and Sara Janes used to be practiced on and while submitt ing to this were sustained by the fact that refreshments vere aura to follow which so sweetened the ask that It became a treat also spoke of the pleasure it hud always been work with the Newmarket WI and that although was now married her interest in work vas as keen as ever even though its scopo might be a little more limited She art Invitation to the to vjslt her home and share the soclnltility of after noon tea any time whin they visiting the At the conclusion of her talk Mrs Charlie Willis pinned a cor- sage on her and on the present occupant of the presidential chair Mm Hodge Clark Smith The Holy City width was a feui of memory for a small boy but ho came through nobly and I was glad mo that he was rewarded apart from tho applause by more of approval like his pre- decessors Mrs brought greet ing from the department Mrs Clare Powell district secretary of Centre York brought a message and Mrs and Mrs spoke for the mayor and council Sho said she had ne ver had time to Join the but always admired their work and honed the Newmarket would feel free to ask for any assistance that she could help them attain Mrs C Lewis and Mrs said a few words of congratulat ion and remembrance One thing that pleased me was the fact that the speakers voices carried so well which is not always so There are two things that rouse lo fury one is to hear a spea ker he he man or woman who speaks clearly at the beginning of a sentence and then leaves you entirely in the dark as to the end The other is a singer who might as well bo singing in Hindustani for all the sense it makes When alt was over we adjourn ed to partake of the delicious re freshments provided and to re new acquaintances greet old friends and eventually come a- way delighted with the whole af ternoon Yes a anniversary is a very fine occasion I want to add here something I just learn ed from Mrs Hodge that the ver beautiful corsages were the work of Mrs Willis and Mrs Hayes These ladies showed their artistry in COUPLE WELCOMED AT SURPRISE PARTY A surprise parly was held In honor of Rev and Mrs A It Yielding at their home on Sept 24 when more than members of
