FIFTYSIX Theiiiitli ProHi lililiiation On Rabies With the cooperation of the Toronto arid North York Hunt Colonel E G King township general manager of the Toronto Humane Society has written the following article on- the current rabies problem The Hunt has arranged for publication of the article as a gesture of appreciation to the district where the Hunt has its activities particularly to farmers over whose land the Hunt conducts its activities The Toronto and North York Hunt has inoculated all its animals includ ing horses to help combat the spread of rabies Joint Masters of the Hunt are Lady Eaton and Colonel Clif ford Sifton Rabies is a natural virus dis ease and all warmblooded ani mals such as cats wolves foxes coyotes cattle horses sheep swine not to mention human beings are susceptible to it The virus affects the central nervous system ultimately resulting in paralysis and death It is in variably fatal once it develops Seasonal Prevalence Contrary to the popular opinion that the disease is limited to the dog days of the summer rabies is most common in the late winter and spring Outbreaks of the disease may develop at any sea son and in any climate Method of Infection The virus does not enter through the nor mal skin but can enter the body if the infective organism gets into a fresh scratch or wound Since the vines is usually present in the saliva of rabid animals the disease is commonly trans mitted by the bite of a rabid animal Rabies in Dogs If a dog is bit ten by a rabid animal it may de velop rabies within days or this may take several months In instances rabies develops The majority within 21 to days after expo sure The virus is not present in the saliva until the early symptoms of rabies appear in dogs is usually classified as furious or dumb depend ing upon the predominating symptoms Furious During the early stage of the disease the dog may appear normal and may even be more friendly and affec tionate than usual But despite its friendliness the dog is easily irritated especially if restrained If picked up it will try to away and if not prompt re leased will bite Children are commonly bitten because they pick up the friendlylooking dog and hold onto him when he tries to get away Other early symptoms are restlessness and excitement dog will seldom lie still but will snap at flies chase chickens cats and other animals There is also a tendency to eat sticks straw dirt and other indigestible material After one to three days dog may become ex tremely vicious biting any living thing that gets in its way The the street and countryside Dogs when congregate in groups so that should one ani mal become infected cases of ra bies may develop for months thereafter When rabies is present in a community all dogs should be kept on the owners premises ex cept when on leash Periodic vaccination is especially im portant to prevent the danger that children and adults may contract the disease from their own dogs Children should be taught to avoid all stray dogs especially if rabies is present in eyes become eon- communUy slray stantly wide open- Often there is a paralysis of the throat result ing in a peculiar howllike bark During this stage the dog will usually roam the countryside at tacking any person or animal that comes in its path Within a few days paralysis develops shown first by a wob bling or stnggering walk and paralysis persits until the animal can no longer stand- Dogs with furious rabies may Jive as long as 10 days following the first symptoms numb In this typo of disease the symptoms con- of sleeping and depression and the dog will try to hide or get away by itself These symp toms arc soon followed by par alysis of the jaw throat and leg muscles There is no irri tability or tendency to bit but persons may be exposed to in fection by trying to look into the impounded and if unclaimed humanely destroyed It has been shown conclusive ly that vaccination against ra bies affords a high degree of pro tection to the average dog but unless the strictest quarantine measures prevail all dogs should be vaccinated periodically the frequency depending on the type of vaccine used Consult your veterinarian What To no If A nog Is Bitten Treatment For Persons Exposed To Babies Because it takes several weeks for rabies in man to develop it is usually possible to prevent the disease by vaccin ation promptly after exposure The treatment consists of to daily injections commencing promptly after exposure Only rarely does this fail to prevent the disease When a person has been bit ten or scratched by an animal vaccine treatment should be started if The animal has been appre hended and has presented clini cal signs of rabies The animal was not caught or identified but rabies is known to be present in the com munity The brain of the animal was found positive for rabies by mi croscopic examination J The animal because of its actions was suspected of being rabid even though its brain was negative for rabies This is be cause diagnosis will then depend on whether the inoculation of brain material into laboratory animals will produce the disease in them Since this takes several weeks the vaccine treatment should be begun at once The vaccine treatment is also recommended for persons who Old Age Pension Increase Favored An increase in the old age pen sion from to 65 a month was proposed by a This is a will pay every dog owner to discuss with his veterinarian Children should be instruct ed not to pat or touch strange dogs or touch dead bodies of dogs fox or any animal they may see in rural had hies This is even if the biting dog appears to have hies Above all unless it is ab solutely necessary to do so the biting dog should not be killed This is because during the early stages of the disease it is often impossible to make a diagnosis of rabies by examining the brain of the animal whereas if the dog is allowed to die of a disease it is usually possible by micro scopic examination of the brain to tell whether the dog had ra bies SMOKIES DEFEAT WHITBY MONDAY TO WIN mi jv tw i rx rt a am SSK- tVi rV l II T A YOU i- a v 1 I J I I f cA Whitbys Campbell above find no dunce on this
