it W the aeries f feaCM f Ok Those were the days of the two major leagues The Pat- brothers Lester and Frank in perhaps the most daring promotional venture in Canadian sports history had deserted the east in which they bad won high acclaim as players and invaded the Pacific Coast to found a new professional league of major proportions They built Canadas first arti ficial ice rinks three of them and introduced hockey where it never had been played before The shadows of a major war were closing over the world in early the Victorias champions of the Pacific Coast came east and were rfbufffd in their Stanley Cup hunt by a Toronto club that included Hippy Holmes Frank and the late Jack Walker world was at war the next year and war between the two big hockey leagues was starting to cloud the sport skies The West Coasters purloined Tommy Smith of Quebec who had led the eastern scorers two successive years Under pres sure they returned him but the peace was an uneasy one And when the season started the eastern powers suddenly realized their stockades had been invaded For as Seattle lined up for Its opening game thy had in goal Hap py Holmes Ken Carpenter Foyston and Walker of the for mer entitled Should be corrected It is true that unem ployed workers have been in re- of supplementary benefits after their regular benefits have run out I know this well be cause it was through the insist of organized labor that these supplementary benefits be made available out of the huge surplus in the unemployment in fund However my reference was to the thousands of people whose supplementary benefits had run out and the other thousands of people who were not eligible for unemployment insurance Sure ly you must have read in the daily papers lately of the des perate appeals from welfare or ganizations who can no longer keep up with the demand for their services There are many many eases of unbelievable hardship in the City of Toronto and other centres which have to be seen to be believed- I have visited some of the missions and welfare centres myself and if you could see the look of desperation and misery on the faces of these people you would feel like do I am sure that it is that such conditions should exist in a country so rich in nat ural resources and other wealth My argument with the govern ments federal and provincial Is their lack of definite action to help alleviate the unemployment situation These people want jobs not relief They want the dignity of helping themselves not to have to go from one wel fare agency to another with cap in hand and forlorn hope in their eyes There is lots of op portunity for in the unmet needs of millions of Canadians homes schools public utilities hospitals roads and all the many other needs of a healthy growing Proper planning and action by the governments in good times would have paved the way for preparedness to take care of the present situation Instead we have to wait until the Dominion Provincial conference and then until many months afterwards until such plans are organized and put into effect And in the meantime human beings men women and little children are asking themselves why I think it is a good question Maybe we should ask ourselves the same question Why is it necessary at all During World War unem ployment was practically un heard of If we can have full production and full employment during war then why cant we have full production and full em ployment in peacetime There are those who would say that organized labor through their demands for higher wages and fringe benefits have brought about the present situation But lets read the financial pages of our newspapers and note care fully that business profits have reached an all time high In with all our unemploy ment business showed a profit increase over of percent So lets Keep the facts straight and realize that higher profits play an important part In the question too Perhaps a panel discussion could be held the town hall some day on these questions It would prove both interesting and informative Larry fe 111 Andrew St Newmarket Maintain York County Park Continued from page deed nil diseuUon prior to
