ceremonies for our hockey champions the Newmarket Office Specialty ju veniles were celebrations in Hollywood last night because of the annual Oscar awards but none of the actors receiving such recognition was more delighted than the home team and their supporters When word was received at the dose of the game that Newmar ket had defeated the fire whistle sounded the good news with a long Rebellion Made Available By Buffalo Doctor Photostatic copies of docu ments about a Newmarket resi dents part in the Upper Canada Rebellion of have been made available by a Buffalo man The copies include a warrant issued for the arrest of Nelson Gorham Newmarket who took part in the rebellion led by Wil liam Lyon Mackenzie Gorhams pardon made later by Queen Rush Pictures of tat Era Ready For Nelson Gorham Russell of Buffalo who is a stepgrand son of the rebel Nelson Gor The original documents are in the Buffalo museum and Dr Russell has made the photo static copies available so that they may be recorded in a his tory of Newmarket now being written Nelson was the son of EH who operated a woollen mill here The home still stands number St is owned by Walter According to legend William Lyon Mackenzie hid in tho ash house at this residence during the troubled times that followed the outbreak of the re bellion Following the outbreak of the rebellion and the weak attempt to a force to attack Toron to a patriot army was form ed across the border A number of Americans who were sympa thetic toward the rebels were supposed to have joined the army Mackenzie was not a military man but he was to head the pa triots army Commissions were given freely and Nelson received a document after he had escaped to the United States which stated that he had been made a lieutenant colonel The document has an insignia sup posedly of the army A letter which accompanied the document instructed him to make secret contact with another officer of the in the States Following the unsuccessful re bellion warrants for the arrest of the participants were issued by Chief Justice John Beverley Robinson who also had lived in Newmarket The warrant for arrest was signed by Robinson toward the end of the death of Dr Stanley Gilbert Dr Gil bert had been in practice as a dentist in Newmarket for years He died suddenly at his home from a coronary He was years old Born in Mansfield Dr Gilbert attended school in He graduated in from the Den tal college at the University of Toronto and came directly to Newmarket to begin his practice Adjusting his way of life to limitations caused by a condition Dr Gilbert for mora than the past decade had to withdraw from many of community activities in which ha had been interested For many years he was a valued member of Trinity United church choir He will be remembered by many young men of the commun ity for his interest in scouting he served on the Scout Group com- mittee At the time of his death Dr Gilbert was a member of the official board of Trinity church Dr Gilbert served with the Canadian Army Dental Corp in World War II He was stationed on the east coast of Canada He is survived by his Gladys Taylor and two sons Wendell with the North York of York County council last Wednesday to retain the York County Park at Lake Simtoe immediate plans are being made by the assets committee to have a bylaw prepared and passed at the June session to
