in a straight fight nave proven very be that for offer my- from all of wish- Christmas and Aurora Page J G SINCLAIR Editor HALL AURORA OFFICE TELEPHONE PA PAGE NINE THURSDAY THE SIXTEENTH DAY OF NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTYFOUR EDITORIALS LOOKING AT THE VOTE In the contest for the office of mayor Dr J Henderson polled votes Sirs Moffat polled votes and Mr Alex Bell polled votes That is to say that electors wanted Henderson as mayor of the town while electors did not want him in that office In other words the Will take office by the will of a minority of the There were three candidates office of mayo but two of them went into what described as a headon collision Amid the debris of this commotion Henderson staked his claim to the chair on acceptance cards while the rejection cards of 895 opposing voters were scattered That is the plain logic of the democratic voting system What has happened in Aurora has often happened elsewhere in provincial and federal elections A can didate with the smaller number of the total votes may often find himself elected where several candidates are competing While such a successful candidate cannot logically claim that he is a representative of the major ity of the voters tho majority must abide by the results of the democratic system Having said this we wish to make it quite plain that We have no intention of carrying anything in the nature feud into the New Year when Dr Henderson is officially installed as mayor We shall then wipe the shite clean of old contentions and if the new mayor gives us a square deal he can count on getting the same from us His assumption of office will initiate a new chapter It could be that Dr Henderson will prove himself an outstanding mayor of the town It is right that in beginning a new chapter in his public career he should be given an opportunity to prove his qualities without reference to past disputes that spirit and without prejudice this newspaper extends its best wishes for success to the mavorelect SIT DOWN AND SHUT UP The Aurora Banner in its last issue gave way to another outburst of hollering against the existence of the Era and Express in Aurora We are of course well aware that the presence of the outoftown news paper in Aurora is a constant source of irritation to the editor of the Banner So much so that we would not be surprised if he wakes up each morning with the repugnant thought of it haunting his earlymorning beverage The reason why 600 readers of the Era and Express in Aurora subscribe to it each week is because they want to read it Surely that should be apparent even to the editor of the smaller periapical But from time to time he is seized with a yen to attack it We do not mind at all such employments on his part To reply to them provides a form of mental exercise in what may be described in the words of the poet as parrying lightly with feeble foe We would suggest that if the Banner editor when he is acting in the capacity of Banner reporter would spend as much time in faithfully reporting members of council as he does in trying unsuccessfully to under- mine this newspaper he would be serving a more use ful purpose He did not report Councillor William Davidson last week although the councillor introduced several matters of local importance at council Speaking of Councillor Davidson In a recent the Banner implied that Mr Davidson had not himself written his nomination speech Since then it has kept cracking away at him by irmuendos What a nice clean paper the Banner is Not one spot of dirt in its virgin pages Now it wonders if in certain circumstances the electors of Newmarket would tell it to go way back ami nit down and shut up That sums it up Us edi tor should go way back and sit down and shut up Then we might have some peace in Aurora and clean journalism A GREAT EDITOR Wo read with sincere regret of the death of B K Sand well for many years editor of Toronto Saturday Night He was not only an editor or outstanding ability but a man of wide reading and a scholar in the best tradition Saturday Night had an influence far beyond its circulation measured in terms of a national maga zine Its Front Page editorials written by Mr were usually masterpieces of deep thought in the finest prose Over a number of years we contributed articles to Saturday Night during Mr editorship One of these written in was a writeup of Mr Win ston Churchill who was not at that time the world- figure he was later to become Another dealt with Lady Randolph Churchill mother of the great statesman We treasure a letter we received from Mr Churchill while he was on a visit to Ottawa soon after he became prime minister thanking us for our article on Lady Wc remember Mr Sandwell telling us that one of his teachers was the late Stephen Both men will go down in Canadian literary history as giants in their distinctive fields of craftsmanship COUNCIL REPORT Davidson Reported Charges Alleging Uninspected Farms A regular meeting of the town council was held on Tuesday December with Reeve Cook in the chair pending the arrival of the mayor All members of coun cil were present Among early business the leather company con- day Merit Chosen One fact was made abundantly clear in the recent elections in Aurora the greater the amount of contro versy the greater the amount of interest taken in local affairs Only a few years ago it was difficult to at tract more than a few people to nomination meetings and acclamations were the rule Mr Charley Peterson took the up a score of honors for the largest poll on Others In Line record with his 1060 votes We Mr Stoddart lOHi would say that that was as much votes and deserved them if seated a report on the fire de partment and stated that fire calls had received attention so far this year It was indicated that costs had risen from a pre vious figure to a point of at the present time Reeve Cook said that costs were climbing rapidly a com ment which was challenged by Councillor Davis who said that other municipalities were in cluded besides Aurora The reeve said that costs were formerly as low as 600 whereas these had now climbed to 3000 Councillor Davidson said you cant compare costs of other years with the present time The report was adopted Centennial Picture Councillor Corbett reporting on the showing of the centennial I for as lung as two years picture said that the attendance The mayor said he would have of the public was not as good as the statements looked into ation being given to the deben tures by the municipal board Dangerous Sidewalk Councillor Davidson referred to a dangerous sidewalk at the end of George St near Welling ton pointing out that a lady had had a bad fall at that point Councillor Davis said there had been previous talk of raising the street at the point where heaving had taken place The mayor remarked that a number of sidewalks should not have been given a concrete but a cinder surface No- Inspections Councillor Davidson called at- pergonal tribute to Mr Peter son as it was to his membership of the public school board As a personal tribute such a vote could hardly have been giv en to a nicer or more genial man Personal matters never entered into our survey of public school matters and for Mr Peterson himself we have always felt re gard Occupational Merits In this newspaper we recom mended Mr Garstang for a seat on the public school board be cause it seemed to us that as an educationist he had occupational merits to justify his election for what is primarily an educational office By profession Mr is a teacher and reputedly a good one By profession Mr Peterson is a baker and from experience we can say he is a good one We dont think Mr Garstang would distinguish himself as a baker nor Mr Peterson as a teacher It seemed to us logical to place a teacher in a job concerned with to statements that while lhe teaching profession But the reeve dairies had been inspected farms didnt think so We veiv in Ik the neighborhood had not mi inspected in some cases had been expected Court Of Revision The mayor took occasion to the Health Unit Lack Of Sanding Councillor Moffat charged that express appreciation for the not enough sand had been used work carried out by the Court on the sidewalks and streets of Revision under the chairman- during the recent icy spell sing- ship of Mr Lome Evans He said that reports indicated that those who had appeared before the court were generally well satisfied with the attention given to their appeals Disposal Plant Councillor Jones raised the matter of the delay occurring in regard to the agreement with ling out Centre St as a case in point Councillor Davis said he would have the complaint look ed into Zoning ByLaw Councillor Moffat reported on a joint meeting with council and much doubt if Dr Sydney Smith president of the univer sity of Toronto would have beat en Mr Peterson at the Aurora polls We even doubt in this in stance if Dr Albeit Einstein him self vould have fared better at the hands of the Aurora electors Town Council Next to Mr Petersons record- making vote came Mr Keith recordbreaking vote for the town council We expected him to win but not so handsomely We sincerely congratulate Keith on his wonderful triumph and take the more pleasure in it di WHAT THEY ARE SAYING Earlier Banner Plan For Bell To Oppose Rose We knew we were making a sure forecast that the Aurora Banner would take no sides among the can- before the elections But like the fabulous Old Man of the Sea its editor came forth from Ins cave to see what lay around on the shore once the storm had blown itself out We also wrote this in our last issue Hollering congratula te planning board and said that I since ours was the first news- discussions had proved paper to announce his intention of running for council and wish ing him success It could be that his fine poll was a tribute to the fam ily as well as to himself But we have no doubt that he will make an excellent councillor He prov ed a sportsman by because of his excellent work as chairman of the finance commit tee In the elections he polled votes and in one year has those figures by 317 votes representing a substan tial addition of public confidence Mr William Davidson polled votes in December and votes this year representing an increase of votes That increase was welldeserved for Mr Davidson has been a stalwart on council a man who is never afraid to express an opinion whe ther it is popular or otherwise At his second attempt Mr A J Child won a seat on council with votes an increase of votes over his previous figures Here again we do not personally know Mr Child but we wish him every success as a member of town council Reeve And DeputyReeve The electors decided as we ex pected in electing Mr J Mur ray reeve of the town He serv ed his apprenticeship as deputy- and was entitled to step a result of experience and good service His success how ever must have proved a sour meal to the panel promoter We wish Mr Murray all suc cess in his new office Mr Vic Jones is now the veter an member of council and none is better acquainted with its pro cedure than he is He is well- equipped in knowledge and ex perience to serve the municipal ity as its deputyreeve and this newspaper joins his many well- wishers in wishing him a very successful year Councillor Moffat Mrs Moffat was always one of the most active members of coun cil and her absence from it dur ing will be a heavy loss to the taxpayers whose interests she constantly protected as well as she knew how Although we did not always agree with her opinions the fact is she had opinions and never crawled under the table when a recount at the last election the time came to vote on them for school board when he lost out As chairman of bylaws for two bv two votes years she carried through a lot of lions for the victors is a poor substitute for taking a definite stand before the victories are won When the storm had blown over the editor came out with a bagful of adjectives which he hurled around with the prodigal ity of a crazy millionaire tossing his dough to all and sundry frjm i pinnacle above the wondering crowd Shellacking sweep ing etc He even had a Viewpoint story about a candidate who owned a rabbit that ate his speech en the kitchen table pre faced with a biblical quotation Said editor was careful however not to name said candidate who the story reported was elected Knifing in the hack under the cloak of anonymity is a rather odious typo of journalism Hut it would appear that gutter scribbling is not restricted to disposal plants al though it Is rather hard on Old Testament writers to be quoted in support of It Kept Clean The Banner editor reminds his renders that we attacked Mr Alex Bell and he In turn attack ed us At least that much of his writing Is true We differed with Mr Hell In regard to plann ing hoard proposals and said so Mr Hell differed with us and said so j But at least the differences were kept clean and neither we nor Mr Bell chose the medium of anonymity In which to ex press them Wc admired Mr Bells sturdy defence of his opinions and went on record to say so We therefore had no hesitation In once mending him for the office of mayor of the town The record shows that the planning hoard bylaw which this newspaper criticized as not being in the best interests of the town was later rescinded at the direction of Mr Bell a report concerned with the arena lite mayor state his oh but the majority tried to compel him as head of the table to sign it The town solic itor ruled as follows You cant compel the mayor to sln any thing which he docs not consc ientiously believe to be true Not only did the Banner sub ject Crawford Rose to editor ial attacks but at the end of 19 the editor of the Banner asked Mr Alex Bell to run against Dr Hose For such Information we have the word of Mr Bell him self The Banners white hope rejected his advances On these facts we suggest that lhe editor of the Banner sit down to masticate a meal com posed of his own words Truly politics on almost any level make strange bedfellows Statement We have no wish to revive public school board disputes hut we noted that Mr Peterson and Mrs Ward Issued a statement In the Banner below the ward Advertisement and as such we presume they will have to pay for it While the disputes were being aired In Aurora News we Invited a statement from tin public school board which we would gladly have published not as an advertisement but news Such a statement at that Mine would have been timely and it would not have cost the board or any of Its members a single cent Aurora Social News Cliff and Bailey shared honors with votes do not personally know Mr Bailey but the electors have given him a wonderful handout and we wish him all suc cess at council Mr is accustomed to big figures In the December elections he came within votes of his present poll run- hard work often of an un attractive character For the time being Aurora has lost an excellent member of coun cil We hope she will try again Sir Winston Churchill lost as many as six elections in the course of his career Public opin ion is often as fickle as mercury taking little or no account of good service Thanks and Good Wishes I wish ta express my sincere thanks to all electors who voted for me and used their influence on my be half in the recent mayoral contest 1 would take this opportunity of wishing nil residents of Aurora a Very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year Summer In the summer of io2 the present editor of the Banner mounted his pontifical pedestal in order to editorially hector the then mayor of the town Or Bone out the mayors alleged faults This newspaper came to his defence A majority of council approved At a meeting of the of the Aurora United church which took place on Thursday last week Mrs played two violin sotos Mrs Willis and Mrs Ann Emmons played a piano duet Miss Homer gave a reading from Dickens Pick wick Papers The Christinas address was given by the min ister Rev J Morris Mrs P spent a few days in town last week visiting friends Mr and Mrs Fish and Miss Carol visited Dr Florence Smith Hamilton
