Down 100 Weekly It is over years since the special school was established at for mentally retarded children Dr Harry Amoss Hamilton advisor to the provin cial minister of education said when he addressed the Novem ber meeting of the Newmarket and District association for Re tarded Children Since then and particularly in the past decade we have realized that there Is much more we should he doing for these slow learners these children who can only to do by doing Two more schools have been provided at Aurora and Smiths Falls hut there still insufficient accom modation It is through associa tions such as this one many more of these children are being trained so that they can become self supporting independent members of society We teach children to read in a regular school not so that they can continue to read Mary saw John but so they can read bus schedules income tax forms and such things We teach them arithmetic so they can plan In figures These normal children learn indirectly They use their knowledge to do many other things The mentally retarded child can only learn directly Dr explained that per cent of the children to be found in the Mentally Retarded classes were mongoloid per cent were cerebral palsy cases and other forms of brain injur ies and only five to percent were from low grade stock They were low intellectually because they inherited it No one knows what is the cause of It occurs in every level of society and age of parents Extensive study is continuing on the sub- But mongoloid children are alt alike They reflect a stage of re tarded development and it might be best to think of them as a group of people who to thousand years ago They have short stubby fingers good for grabbing a club but not so good for using precision tools or holding a pencil They have short thick tongues with rough tops grand for eating coarse foods but not so good for con versation They belong to that level of the human race when it did things rather than gabbed about them Dr Amos said Their tongues arent nimble and because they havent many words in their minds to use the words must be concrete ones they ore trained to do things mongoloids like to do them and take a great pride In doing them well Dr explained Dr told of many in stances in his own experience where mongoloid boys and girls after having been trained were earning their own living They did routine jobs which a normal would have found dull but they were happy in the work They were necessary jobs and the young people were leading useful lives Next Dr told of the types of mentally retarded child ren whose brains have been in jured at birth through some ill ness or as a result of an acci dent He said that lite took many forms ami when the speech centre is not injured they can acquire and use an astonishing vocabulary he add ed The brain injury in some cases Is as if the transmission gears are out of kilter They cant put forth the effort to transform he thought into action but with time patience and assistance through participation in special classes these children can es tablish detour paths from the thinking part to the doing part of their brains Dr Amoss explained that be cause it is realized that these children cant learn as well as normal children they arc taught differently regular school child reft have trouble in reading words as with what and this So these words a re stripped from the vocabulary of the mentally retarded Such Words as ball doll boy and house words which they can associate with things are used And then when they have learn ed the alphabet they come to those words which confuse the norma child and they are grad ually introduced to them Similarity in arithmetic they dont spend a lot of time learn ing multiplication and division in a school for the mentally re tarded They wont need to be able to use the technical type of arithmetic As long as they can add by counting they can handle money and do other simple tasks Dr said Dr Amoss congratulated the local group for the progress made since Its organization earl ier this year He said that one of the must important functions such an association was that it gave parents of mentally re tarded children an opportunity to meet others with similar Mrs and daughter Ha Toronto visited her sister Mrs Win Sr on Sunday Mr and Mrs Rosa Grant De troit were guests of Mr and Mrs John
