w- In The Upp By is a conserva tion field officer who during the summer working district for the pur pose of stimulating interest agriculturists in the pro gram of the Upper Holland River Conservation Authority In 1953 the Conservation Branch of the Ontario Depart ment of and Develop ment published a Conservation Report for the Upper Holland Valley An important section of this report dealt with land use both present and future in the watershed Basic to all land use is the availability of water for crop production Water may be in excess or in scarcity- sit uations limit crop production In the Upper Holland watershed the land is mostly well drained so water excess except in the spring is usually not trouble- some But water scarcity par ticularly in summer months is all too frequent a problem Creeks Since water use and supply are such an important aspect of con servation the watershed or drainage area is the basic unit of organisation in conservation work Land use studies were carried out over the whole Upper Holland watershed but more de tailed studies were done in throe small valleys within the water shed These little valleys as they are called are the water- sheds of small tributaries of the main river The tributary creeks do not have names- even locally but have been described in the Con servation Report as Snowball Creek Wesley Corners Creek and Sharon Creek Snowball Creek rises near Snowball Corner on the third line of King and joins a branch of the Holland River on the southwest edge of Aurora Wes ley Corners Creek starts about half a mile east of Wesley Cor ners and runs northwest to join the Holland above Newmarket Sharon Creek rises in the third concession crosses the highway south of Sharon runs parallel to it until it turns west to join the main river behind the Sharon Temple One or more of these little valleys are suggested as good places to start the Upper Holland Authoritys conservation pro gram These three little valleys are fairly representative of aver age soil conditions throughout the whole Upper Holland water shed- Soil and water conservation Is necessary on the sloping land near the headwaters or along the streams where they cut through the plains The best way to achieve soil and water conserva tion and to bring a farm into its highest state of production is to plan a farm for these purposes Some farmers operate their farms in such a way already On other farms some special measures for soil and water con servation should be introduced These measures may include the building of farm ponds or the planning of a farm by the Soils Advisory Service of the Ontario Agricultural College Any land owner may obtain advice on conservation practices from the Agricultural office at Newmarket The Upper Holland Conservation Authority is anxious to secure the cooperation of land owners in the watershed in order to carry out its conservation pro gram The Newmarket Era and Express Thursday July Page arisen regarding a building being erect ed on Lot one and of plan lie advised that the building he and his were having constructed on these lots was not anything to be ashamed of but he did admit that
