game at the Newmarket Memorial arena on Saturday af ternoon when four young boys were seriously injured there is some doubt in our mind We are not an authority on hockey In fact didnt wit ness the game in question With one hockey player in the family although still in the Squirts league for the ten year olds and under and another boy with hockey aspirations we more than a casual interest in the game The Saturday episode involved two teams of the North York Minor Hockey league boys years of age and under Gorman Smoke Rings New- market were playing a team from In the first per iod one boy on the team suffered a broken ankle During the second period another mem ber of the same team had his nose broken The third period saw two more boys in jured One suffered concussion and the fourth had his nose cracked That is a rather Impressive list of injuries But the most distressing feature of the stosy as we heard it was that the game was not unusually rough Many witnesses reported that they had seen more rugged games The game was fairly and the Injuries were unfortunate but only the bad luck for which you must be pre pared in a game like hockey We are neither criticizing Peter Gorman who has been pub lic spirited enough to sponsor a hockey team nor the coach Frank We that they shared our dis may that four visitors to the towns rink were injured We do deplore the system which per mits any type of playing from which such injuries can occur As one hockey fan who had seen the game told us The Al team was just as rough The injuries could have happen ed to the Newmarket hoys but they were lucky The game was rougher than you see any where Its not just in Newmar ket but wherever they are play- ins hockey and the accidents could have happened in any game Only the previous Saturday one of the Newmarket boys Bradley Walker had required nine stitches in his lip after game with club High sticking is frequently stated as the cause of injury The Aliis group on December thought that the Newmarket team members carried their sticks too high One boy the one who suffered the concussion was cross checked while he was on his knees He was hit across the forehead with the stick No one watching Saturdays game felt there was bad temper shown No one said that the players were being unduly rough or unsportsmanlike But four boys left the game serious injuries Authorities on the sport say that the speed of the game today makes proper stickhandling im perative If the coaches were to say Either play hockey or take off your gear and go home there would be a noticeable de crease in injuries Perhaps the time is at hand when the mothers of these boys who play hockey should become more interested in the problem Wed feel physically ill if our boy was the cause of some pain Iful injury to another lad in the name of sport The possibilities of permanent disability increases as the roughness continues in hockey It would be better if they did not play hockey or take part in any game rather than to learn poor sportsmanship This spirit of winning regardless of the price is a corrosive influence on a boys character Play fairly Give the other team an equal chance by follow ing the rules of the game or else stay home is what we should tell our boys They look to us for guidance If because we ignore their need such in juries as occurred on Saturday continue to result from hockey games we are as guilty as if wed taken the stick and smash the other players face with it Social Mews Mrs Bruce Lee and children of Sunderland visited her par ents Mr and Mrs John Shier on
