particular emphasis on sex and crime comics is being spon sored in Newmarket by the ParentTeacher association St Johns Chrysostom school In a report to the December meet ing of the Mrs ex plained the idea of the proposed campaign Mrs accompanied by Mrs Arthur West attended the December meeting of the New market Home and School associ ation when Childrens Reading was the theme of the program Mrs gave a brief report on that meeting as it related to comic books Many parents are unaware of the existing situation Mrs said They read comics when they were children and feel they werent too bad Since crime and sex have been em phasized in many comic books Another thing of which many parents are unaware is that there is a strong censorship on comic strips Parents read them in the daily or weekly papers and think the comic books are much the same This Is not so said Mrs An amendment to the Canad ian Criminal Code makes it a crime for retailers to carry im moral comic books Such an of fense is punishable by law In Windsor Catholic Youth organization sponsored a similar campaign against sex and crime comics The group printed a fullpage advertisement in the citys newspapers listing all the stores which would cooperate in the project Hie retailers had been approached individually to see if theyd support a campaign to prevent the sale of immoral literature for children Rev Father CahHl on comics in the November Issue of the Ladles Home Journal the question of crime comics was discussed No literature for children at any time has described crime and delinquency In such quantity With such detail so realistically and with such Illustrations The article continued said Mrs by saying Many children who have never become delinquent or conspicuously dis turbed have been adversely af fected by them Crime comics create a mental atmosphere of deceit trickery and cruelty Many of the children come to grief over it The plans to sponsor a campaign to leviate the local sit uation There The elec tion and Installation will be held at the January meeting A large bale of clothing and quilts was packed for overseas relief Money was designated for the Barley Fund for Korea The Editor I would appreciate a spot of your valued space in which to put forward a viewpoint on the wheat price problem from the grassroots angle One of your contemporaries inquires Will the prices board examine that government mon opoly in the wheat industry and its effect on the cost of bread also this is from one of the fi nancial journals Ever since the Dominion government took over the wheat industry every pound of wheat millers have purchased to make the flour to make the bread has come from the wheat board and it has been sold to the millers at an identical price What is so surprising about a uniform price for bread when government insists on a uniform price for the chief ingredient that bread Financial Post Now sir this reader has not either the desire or the essen- facts and figures to answer the above very technical ques tions but there is one point on which I feel like commenting briefly the latter description of wheat as the chief ingredient in the loaf True in the sense that without the bread grain there could be no loaf the term is accurate enough but this fact does not cover the whole picture and certainly not when the price of bread is the discus sion base Only the other day one of the farm editors pointed out that if I remember correctly out of the for todays loaf fractionally over three cents accrues to the wheat farmers look at this table which has been in my clippingbook for just a decade showing the average price for a bushel of wheat in specific years and the average price of bread per pound in those same years 1918 76 I wonder just how the loaf re mained so stable while the wheat dollar was dancing all over the lot The Editor Saturday morning I went down to the arena to watch my eight- yearold son and a host of others from the grades in school
