provisions for full time fire department employees have been left to the Newmarket town council On Monday night the council discussed measures which were being considered in hopes of reducing fire insurance rates in the municipality The council had asked the Fire Underwriters association for sug gestions on how insurance rates could be reduced A reply was read Monday in which the asso ciation asked whether or not any thing had been done about its recommendations It had suggested a new fire alarm sys tem full time members on the fire department and improve ments in the water works system Mayor Vale insisted as he has done previously that Newmarket should have a combination fire and police department or at least full time members on the fire Pollock Asks For Recount In North The final council meeting for in North was held at yesterday Hoy J Pollock chaired the meeting and this will be his last official act for at least another year unless the recount he is ask ing for from tin Municipal Board reelects him as reeve At the polls on December 5 he was defeated by John Doyle by ballots Resolutions were passed to fin ish off yearend business ami the Orchard Beach Association was was not legally bound to sell the land to the firm as it had not passed a bylaw authorizing the sale In the meantime council re ceived an offer from another In dustry to locate here Only the Charles St site was available At another special meeting council reviewed information about both companies Tip Top Plastics plans call for female labor with to start and the second offer came from a firm which employs skilled labor The plastic firm expects seasonal slumps and would employ fewer in winter than in summer Most members of council fav ored the second industry which applied but felt that council was obligated morally to accept tho first offer Arrangements were made to discuss the problem with representative of the plastic firm who arrived Monday night Tip Top manufactures hair curlers ceremonies outlined her back ground of musical experience Miss Stephenson sang five selec tions Five childrens choirs from the public schools each sang one selection and then the entire number of approximately 200 voices sang together as a mussed choir They had been trained by Miss Stephenson who director of music for the public schools At Intermission the children left and their places were council had been con sidering the new offer But Newmarket does not do things like that said the mayor He told the firms representatives to complete its arrangements to locate in Newmarket Council did not discuss the legal question concerning the sale of land any further but the mayor said that no documents show the purpose of the original purchase It was not stated in the option on the land that the purchase would be for an in dustry ENTERTAIN ART CLUB A The Newmarket Art club was entertained at the home of the past president Robert Chad- wick and Mrs Chadwick fol lowing the annual meeting on Thursday Dec Refreshments were served by the hostess FAMILY HOMELESS AFTER FIRE AT LAKE WILCOX A family of seven Mr and Mrs Harold Chevalier and their five children were left home less following a fire on Monday morning which destroyed their cottage at Lake Wil cox The three younger children were rescued from the burning house by a neighbor Mrs Rich ard Mrs Chevalier had gone to Toronto to visit a doctor and had left the three children in Mrs care Mrs had slipped over to her own home for a few minutes when Donald Chevalier burst into the house to tell her the chesterfield was burning Racing back to the Chevalier home Mrs attempted to extinguish the flames When her efforts failed she snatched Betty Jane two months from her crib- picked up Gale and carried them to safety Aurora firemen fought the blaze for more than an hour but were unable to save the building or contents Not even overcoats were saved for the children All the family has is what they were wearing Mr Chevalier a truck driver was working in Toronto at the time of the fire His two other children were at school The Oak Ridges Lions club has started a fund to aid the family Stanley Rule the chairman of the Lions welfare committee found homes for the children and par ents immediately after the dis aster At this time of year our funds low said Mr Rule Weve appealed to the Salvation Army in Aurora for some 2500000 Home For Aged On Eagle Street Plans for home for the aged to be built on the south side of Eagle St Newmarket for Metropolitan Toronto have been ordered by the met ropolitan housing welfare
