at the November 5 meeting of the Womans association Trinity United church Newmarket Mrs- Coles the former Price daughter of Mr and Mrs Harper Price spent the summer touring the continent and the British Isles The devotional period was conducted by the president Mrs- M B A nomin ating committee consisting of Mrs J- Morris Mrs A Arn old and Mrs A Mitchell was appointed to bring in a slate of officers for the coming year The slate will be pre sented at the December meet ing In her talk Mrs Coles gave an interesting account of her travels in France and Italy The beauties of the country- side the simple pleasures of the people the leisurely pace of living and the contentment of the French were the strong est impressions she retained of her visit to that country The conducted tour of which Mrs Coles was a mem ber took them to the south of ITS v-y- World By Carouni Ion Once again November has come and briefly we have stopped in our daily round to think of our nations dead who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars and the Korean conflict Quietly for two minutes we stood with bowed heads joining the other members of the Commonwealth in a tribute to them In factories and business Newmarket Social France where they visited Nice next men thought of iheir buddies who had not re turned- They relived the horrors and nightmarish tensions or hours in trenches on ad vance patrol duty or the Dog watch in They re membered the night missions over Bremen or Frankfurt For some the long dreadful days of prison camp following Hong Kong sweep over them in a suf focating wave of memory For one generation the door of remembrance swings on such names as ions and For another it is Dunkirk and Singa pore What will it be for We have rejected the term Armistice Day tor ihis date be cause it did not as hud been so fervently mark the find of hostilities Thirtylive and the Riviera before going on to Italy She watched the women gathering orange blos soms on sheets below the trees were destined for the perfume industry Near Florence Mrs Coles visited a cemetery beautifully tended where the white cross es marked the resting place of thousands of Canadian boys While in Rome the party fortunate in being able to wit- the Pope conducting a service He gave his message which was on the theme of humility In four languages As the Pope was carried into the church of St Peter on the shoulders of his guard the crowd surged forward striving to receive his blessing While on a visit to one of the churches a young girl spoke to Mrs Coles in perfect English and offered to explain anything she wished to know She had been born in Caro lina but had returned to Italy prior to the war Because of her aged parents she was un able to return to the United States She asked for the prayers of Canadians that Italy would not fall into Communist hands In Italy the extreme pov erty of the peasants and their tireless efforts to wrest a liv ing from the soil made a deep impression on the speaker York County Hospital Meeds Your Donation after signing of that armis tice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month we are again awaiting the completion of yet another armistice agreement Our fathers thought they had made the world safe for democ racy with the quieting of the guns in France in 1018 Fate must have smiled ironically when these same men just two decades later stood by their sons went to war So mingled with our feelings of humility as we paused in tribute to our war dead were the ones of frustration The futility of raising another generation for the battle fields is felt by every parent Is there never to be an end to this wastage of human life But as we paused in our work day our thoughts not only went back to those who found a resting place in foreign lands but to the who return ed maimed in body and mind Their world has boon confined by the walls of a hospital Monu ments to mans infinite confus ion such buildings as Sunny- brook hospital have been their life for years In them they have seen their youth pass and the years drag by slowly so very slowly November 11 should then not only be a time of remembrance but one of dedication We should remember our valiant dead We should think of those in military hospitals and transform our thoughts into the positive actions of gifts for them at Christmas and other occasions visits to the veterans wards provision of entertainment through the hold ing of concerts or send ing of magazine subscriptions Many veterans are able to leave the hospitals for a Sunday afternoon drive if volunteers are available with their cars These are only a few suggestions There are many ways in which we can show we care that it isnt a lip service we pay them once a year And what of the years to come have done their duty The challenge is there and we are the ones who must prove whether their sacrifice was in vain The way is open It lies in the United Nations the organ ization working for international understanding and tolerance Did the stormy weather on Saturday keep you at home so that you didnt buy your Poppy Your donations may still be sent to the local branch of the Cana dian Legion Proceeds from the sale of popples is used to assist needy veterans and their famil ies in the district MEETING The TJ November meeting was held at the home of Mrs A Winn with the presi dent Mrs
