i Rang Through Arena Rafters We were one of 294 adults who paid 65 cents for an evening- entertainment at the Aurora Memorial arena on Monday night September Besides the adults students paid their cents admission fee The students were we understand of public school age Besides these and a large number of children were preent The entertainment was de- money they were paid They scribed as matches were a game pair under the auspices of the Aurora arena board The onlookers Were composed of many pretty teenage girls in summer frocks young mothers with children at their side youths and men in various agegroups ranging up to septuagenarians and perhaps an here and there We wondered if the girls were hardboiled students of physical prowess and the subtler com- of the science of wrest ling or were attracted to the scene by what psychologists de scribe as inhibited impulses As for the old men they were un doubtedly in search of the en chantment known as the restor ation of lost youth For ourselves we were on va cation and in search of confirma tion or otherwise of the con demnation which members of the Recreation Commission had expressed of the goingson at the arena Wo had a stomachfull before we left Hie Bell It must be put to the credit of the organizers that before the Veal thing started a few mo ments were given over to the sinking of the National Anthem After this was over the lights put out leaving only the ring illuminated Into the ring Him Joe The bell rang again the audi torium lights were dimmed and the spotlight played on the ring A massive figure in red shorts came from the dressing room and climbed through the iopes to be followed by one whose name was hailed as Joe With an impressive gesture which sug gested contempt he discarded a brilliant blue robe and entered into conference with his oppon ent and the ref Joe appeared to be protesting something or other Then the battle raged There was a clutching of heads and all of a sudden Joe was down and looked as though his body was being squeezed to size sixteen by the powerful strangulating limbs of the man in red shorts Come on Joe shouted the onlookers in unison With what looked like a terrific jab on the face of his opponent Joe freed himself from the limbs that had locked him to the floor was on top of his man bending up his legs The chant of the crowd rose louder and louder In calls of Kill him Joe Tie him up Joe But the protagonist on the floor was not to be tied up for came two young men variously long Ho was free again and named as darky and red head both With them in the ring was the ref The ref came in for a lot of ribbing Cant you count Wake up Shut up The two young fellows were at each other One would be down on the floor of the ring whllo his opponent jabbed at his head and nose whenever he struggled to get free He would get and then he leapt at his tormen tor and in a moment was giving him the same medicine As fury of struggle increased shouts of the spectators ga thered tempo Yelling whist ling wake up resounded through the rafters There were some physical contortions taking place One or the other of tho would ring after a jab or a kick in the abdomen Thuds on the floor attested to a body having been thrown over the shoulders of an opponent and sometimes a head of hair would be seized and crack bang a few more thuds on floor from a tumbling body As body went down and stayed there for a few sec onds there were loud calls of wake up Cant you count Shut Up ref These twining jab on the face and nose thuds on floor pulling of hair and heads with what look ed sometimes tike a real nock to Jaw from a clenched fist continued for half an hour with out rest or letup contest ants looked weary before end were groping for each others heads and bodies sleepwalkers finding their way Joe was obviously having a bad time of it Then the crowd ap peared to lose sympathy with Joe and there were loud calls of dirty dirty The ref received chants of censure calls of wake up ref Count him out ref The tempo of the onlookers had ft lot of mercury in it Two bouts had been ended and the third was in progress It oc curred to us that group of cannibals or less carnivorous na tives from the jungle would have fled in terror from this tremendous scene of swinging and clutching limbs Then the bout came to an end and Joe wasnt winner Tile victor offered a handshake which was accepted But in an Instant Joe flicked the victor on the jaw and this started off a brief bout with naked fists Suddenly Joe was given what looked like a knock out and he lay prone by tho In a few moments he got to his feet picked up his robe and dived into it The crowd booed him in return he stamped his feet and shook his fist at his tormentors Then lie climbed back through the ropca and strode majestically in direct lion of the dressing- room Hauls Par Excellence Wo were advised that tho last bouts would be the best Might be a bit gory but still It would ho good In any ease the cele brated Big Jim who In his official life is Constable Jim and a fine fellow would be in the ring With him would be Black Panther There would also be a real Wo baron ami black man had had our fill i Off ICE HALL AURORA TELEPHONE PAGE NINE m THURSDAY THE SEVENTEENTH DAY OF SEPTEMBER NINETEEN AND FIFTYTHREE EDITORIALS THANK YOU It gives us pleasure to express sincere thanks to Councillors William Davidson Dale King and J Murray for their support of this newspaper at the last meeting of council It takes moral courage to reverse a stand taken on a former motion and both Mr David son and Mr King have exhibited the possession of that all too rare quality in public life Councillor J Murray defended the right of the Era and Express to equality with its opposition from the start While it would have redounded to the credit of the mayor reeve and deputyreeve to have made a similar reversal we were not surprised at their obdur acy A surgical operation would not rid some mentali ties of crass prejudice DESERVING OF CENSURE Apparently there is no supervision over the attend ance at what are described as wrestling matches at Aurora Memorial arena If there were it seems unlikely that young children would be admitted to such orgies as we witnessed at the arena on Monday night Sept when a series of stomachsickening encounters took place under the spotlight It was because of the criticisms of these shows that were voiced at a recreation commission meeting that we went to the arena to see for ourselves what went on When the chairman of the commission Mr J Buchanan said he shuddered to think of the affect of these socalled wrestling matches on the minds of young children his language was not an exaggeration Yet there were many young children present in the company of their young mothers It is ironical to think that the recreation commission prides itself on the good behavior of the children who use playgrounds at tho same time a kindred or ganization permits youngsters to witness gory exhibitions remindful of the lusty stories of the cave man One elderly spectator remarked to us that what ever it was It wasnt wrestling It is claimed that the more colorful encounters are put on just for show manship to draw the crowds Whoever is responsible for admission of chil dren of lender age to those shows is deserving of censure There should be more regard shown for the future of children than to allow them to such scenes What took was more convincing argument that all sport should be placed within the control of recreation commission SUPPORTS CLEAN WRESTLING on our editorial entitled Clean Sport in last weeks issue Mr Bob Mcleod coach of the King City wrestling club says I desire to commend you about your editorial I do not want to be concerned about matter in another municipality but being neigh bors in the same district and reading the local we have to keep our houses in order for our mutual interest I fl that some people have at had the courage to have their thoughts of socalled shows printed am an amateur wrestling coach and that wrestling as taught In most places In the world is of Iho cleanest arid moat beneficial of sports We have proven it in our annual field- days in King City It is difficult to enroll students lh on wrestling class they and their form their opinions of wrestling from pro exhibitions of wrestling in local situation will only be cleaned up when Lite public demands It or they quit patronizing wrestling farces We surtf our venders will find Mr comments on the topical subject of wrestling of groat interest WONT DEFEND BYLAWS Councillor Will lam Davidson ft man with of his convictions introduced a motion which mount that all town bylaws should bo strictly observed lie said what a many people In Aurora have said namely that die town bylaws have not boon observed fa all cases On more than one occasion ho has asked council what use was served by bringing In bylaws unless they were carried out It does seem farcical to spend money and time on the preparation of bylaws and the further and spent on passing them through If they rtrri to bo broken soon as some crops up It seems to us that Davidsons motion was intended to give stability to and respoct for town bylaws his motion did not oven win a seconder chair man of bylaws Councillor Moffat ignored It and finally It was withdrawn Presumably therefore council will go on passing bylaws to apply in some cases and not in others if precedents followed No wonder a of council recently remarked that In Aurorabylaws are a town Joke COUNCIL SIDELIGHTS Animosity Charges has been talking again When the mayor talks he often says things Sometimes lie con demns others But at the last meeting of council he condemned himself If the mayor has ever been taught to be cautious he forgets his lessons The mayor should remember that nothing is opened more frequently by mistake than the mouth We did not attend tho last council meeting held on Septem ber Our coUeague J Slruthers managing editor of the Era and Express very kindly offered to fill our place and it was a very interesting report that ho gave on the front page It was extremely interesting to us to read a report by another hand of the proceedings of a council which wo have attended for nearly four years In the course of the discussion on a motion to rescind the adver tising ban on the Era and Ex press the mayor directed his at tention to Mr Sir said the mayor there is no ani mosity against the Era and Ex press but there is very much ani In the course of his tirade which is on record lie made damaging untruthful statements concerning ourselves and the part we nave taken In lhe public affairs of this town We suggest that in the case of
