On Boulevard The publicity that has been given to Bill MandeU recreation director has brought him into the Aurora limelight Such publicity was certainly not originated in these columns It is what has arisen out of it that has provoked a good deal of discussion Is Bill overworked say the least He stopped only long enough to take a Jab at us for a difference of opinion we had had with him on a matter of public interest Then he walked on in a pettish attitude We confess we were rather depressed at the In cident though we should have known better A wellknown publisher remarked to us some years ago As long as you write paragraphs praising people theyll like you But just criti cize them a bit however Justi fied it is and theyll soon turn on you Of course we have proved this over and over again But we shall not alter our ways If we think an Is good well praise it If we think it isnt good well condemn It always giving the other fellow a chance to reply But we hope well never become so childish as to turn away from anybody who happens to differ from us That attitude seems to us to indicate mental decay Our huffy friend can have it his way After we had thought over the matter for a few minutes our disappointment passed and we felt amused at the incident Some people are funny we concluded Police Dance We never learned to dance and dont Intend to learn now But it did give us pleasure the other day to hand Constable William SI for a ticket for a dance being put on by the York County Police Association This is to take place on Wednesday night September at the New pavilion at lake Cecil and his Glendale orchestra will pro vide the music We hope the police will have and enjoyable evening They de serve It If you meet Constable on the street hell probably have a few tickets for sale lie has a very nice way of selling a ticket Try him out and see Our regrets and apologies to customers of the Hess Drug Store who called for their copies of the Era and Express on Fri day afternoon and Saturday of last week and found there were none left Owing to an error only about half of the usual quantity of Eras were left with Mr Hess and Friday noon all had been disposed of Unfortun ately we did not learn of this situation until Saturday evening when It was too late to do any thing about it There will lie an adequate supply of copies of the In this weeks issue we publish the work sheet submitted by Bill to the recreation commis sion meeting held on August A study of It would show that he had few idle moments So im pressed was William Davidson by what he heard that he said it sounded to him like slavery Then one speaker piously pro tested that if Bill liked doing so much work that it was not up to the commission to tell him not to do it This sounded rather cheap to us It could be that the work had to be done and there was no one else to do it It is a problem we think that will have to be further consider ed hy the commission Doing Fine Work It should be made quite clear that we have no criticism to of fer of the recreation commission as such It has done and doing a fine Job of work It is all voluntary work with the ex ception of the secretarytreasur er who receives a fee for his duties Meetings are held twice In each month and besides these there are committee and special committee meetings The Aurora Recreation Com mission has gained a rating as being one of the best organiza tions in Canada Meetings start punctually at 8 oclock and at tendance of members is excellent so much so that any elected member who does not attend reg ularly Is quickly replaced For three years the commiss ion was most ably chaired by Mr Don Glass It was not his wish to carry on so long as chairman on the grounds that such duties should be divided up However he was pressed Into service but in his last year stipulated that the job would have to be filled another This task fell to Mr J Buchanan one of the origina tors of the commission and he has done an excellent Job He is ably assisted his vicechair man Mrs Mr is a good speak er who knows what he wants can state his case In clear words never hesitates to do so He has often stirred an argument through speaking his mind He never takes exception to criti cism from others and Is as good a friend at the end of an argu ment as at its beginning He always ready to admit an error of judgment One or twice over the past few years he has crossed words with us We like him for the fact that he can give take I Express for customers that Is how It should be He Hess Store from now on likes handing out praise where- he thinks it is due Incidentally Mr Is keen on the arts and cultural activities Miss Dorothy a recent en at the Legion carnival Ik cousin Home People Are Fanny We met man on the street the other day for whom we have held a high opinion In the past we have given him a full share of publicity We hailed him with pleasure on our part But wo Instantly noticed that his man ner was huffy offhand to new Worms Seeing a flashlight playing around a boulevard adjoining ones home after the midnight hour arouses wonder That happened to us the other early morning we called out to Its owner asking If he had lost something No ho replied Just looking for dew worms Descending from our apartment to see the process In action we found the searcher with a ful of wriggling worms Going fishing next week he said Assured we then went to bed WORK SHEET Of Duties Performed By Bill Mundell Considerable controversy was aroused by a report carried by the Aurora Banner concerning the nature of the duties performed by the recreation director and his assistant Bill At the meeting of the Rec reation Commission held on August Mr sub a work sheet contents of which are given bore- under Monday am FIFTYTHREE EDITORIALS JIM BROAD BACKl Some time back there was a meeting of the Social Credit party held in the town park The washrooms were locked up and after considerable difficulty a key was located and the facilities made available And what kind of facilities did the visitors to our town enjoy The mayor told council that he had received a report that their condition was disgraceful- The mayor quite properly deplored the fact that visitors should get so unfavorable an impression of Aurora And what was the upshot It was resolved by council that the of the town parks public rooms town hall clerks office and other public build ings be supervised by Mr the town foreman At the same meeting it was resolved that a man be hired in connection with the operation of the disposal plant and procedure supervised by the town foreman Mr At the August meeting of council DeputyReeve Murray failed to place before council a recommendation arrived at at a meeting of organizations that the Parks Board be responsible for the of the parks and playgrounds Instead of which he proposed a motion that was carried that Mr- Goulding be instructed to cut the grass and weeds on the streets and in the parks and to keep the weeds fully under control- Is it any wonder that in our Council Sidelights of last week we were moved to say that we were feeling sorry for Jim He is asked to do this and to do that until there seems no end to his duties His broad back must at last be bending under the weight of his increasing responsibilities If this sort of thing con- tinues hell soon need a pair of crutches to keep himself on the perpendicular BILL WORKING WEEK At a meeting which lasted from shortly after 8 pm to 1130 a lot of words were spoken Thous ands of them All this happened at the last meeting of the Recreation Commission with five prominent mem bers absent Since so many spoken words would have filled probably eight columns of the Era and Express our only alternative was to give a condensed version of what happened and leave it at that The major substance of the discussions had to do with the duties of the recreation director and his assis tant The recreation director did not furnish a per sonal report on his activities- The assistant Bill Mun- did After it was concluded Councillor Davidson said that it sounded like slavery It did It was extremely ironical that any man engaged on recrea tional work should put in so many hours It was made clear that the Recreation Commission itself did not impose such long hours on the assistant The chairman Mr Buchanan made that fact quite clear It would appear therefore that there is some fault in the allocation of duties and the time involved in them It would seem that if such duties were evened up between the director and assistant both men could enjoy a fair working day The problem is one for the Commission itself THEY ARENT NEEDED There is considerable adverse comment on the nar row sidewalk on the west side of Yonge and the meters installed there to which we have drawn atten tion So that our readers may understand the position wo measured the sidewalk from the retaining wall to the meters and it varies from to inches There never was any need for meters north of the Wellington street stop lights Their presence suggests a barricaded town CRITICISM EXPRESSED We have heard some criticism of three members of the Aurora town council because of action in signing their names as councillors to a letter advocating the election of their favorite candidate in the- North York campaign It may be that thay wore too ardent in adding their municipal status to their appeal but in that they were preceded by the reeve and another mem ber of council whose status was given to an appeal for the election of the opposite candidate It will be a bad clay for democracy when men and women arc barred from expressing Ihoir political opin ions in a federal election because they are members of municipal council It might perhaps have been better If all the signatories had omitted their municipal on the documents Maybe in instance it a tit for tat A MODEL CAMPAIGN The political campaign in North York was con ducted in the best tradition No personalities wore in troduced and there was no mud si I aging The ease of each candidate was Hinted In circulars and other liter ature The appeal was made to reason not to passion It would be hard to envisage a more decorous campaign in the whole of Canada Moth candidates were men whoso private filia tions belong to the ancient order of Freemasonry the modern order of both of which tench the highest codes of citizenship and ethics In the case of both candidates such principles were given practical application Tip defeated as well as the successful can didate may lake pride in having fought a model cam paign COUNCIL REPORT Express Opposition To Meters In a short session which concluded its business shortly after 10 pm several matters of outstanding im portance were dealt with at a regular meeting of the town council held on Monday night Aug Among them was the subject of the meters on the west side of St which have come under review in Aurora News Page Mr Snaith of Ave responded to the invitation given to him at the previous meeting of council and made a personal appearance He pointed out that he was asking only for his costs to be covered in regard to his property which council wished to take over as previously re ported in these columns He said he did not know at the present time what his lawyers expenses would amount to as he had not received the account It was finally agreed to give the matter further consideration when the legal fees were submit ted to Mr Snaith the mayor pointing out that the same would have to be approved by the town solicitor before council did any thing in the matter Arena Repairs Mr chairman of the arena board and Mr J Of ford appeared as a delegation and presented proposals for the installation of a cement wall at the east end of the arena The length of the wall would be 101 feet feet deep and inches wide and the approximate cost would be 1500 When the sub ject came up under new business a motion approving the propos als was carried Disposal Plant The deputyreeve presented a verbal committee report in con nection with the disposal plant the hiring of a fulltime man working under the supervision of the town foreman as agreed upon at a meeting of council held some weeks ago It emerged that the hiring of the attendant had not yet been done Considerable comment was made on the odor problem Coun cillor Davis pointing out that he knew of a case of a business man the north end of the town who had to close up earlier than was his custom as a result of the smells Councillor Jones said the rec ommendations of the board of health had not so for been car ried out and he was in favor of such recommendations being car ried out Councillor J Mur ray said it was a hour job and one man could not undertake the required supervision Councillor Davidson supported the opinions of Councillor Jones and the mo tion to hire a man was carried advertisement to be placed accordingly Steps In Driveway A letter from Mr W Cowling was considered in which the leading up from the street had partly been placed in his driveway during the recent en gineering work that had been carried out He requested that this mistake be corrected Councillor J Murray point ed out that Mr Cowling was very dissatisfied with the present set up Councillor Jones said it was a very poor job The matter then gave rise to considerable dis- cussion on the installation of meters on the narrow sidewalk when it was claimed that the by law enabled meters to be placed on the sidewalk as far north as Snow and Bests premises Councillor Davidson said he saw no reason why meters should be put in where the sidewalk was so narrow Councillor Moffat said the meters just looked silly there It was resolved to place the matter in the hands of the chair man of the streets committee Councillor Davis to meet with Mr Cowling in regard to his com plaints Zoning ByLaw A letter from the planning board requested information on what council was going to do about the zoning bylaw and map and when it was suggested that a further special meeting be held to discuss it Councillor Jones re marked that a special meeting had already taken place and they had gotten nowhere Councillor Moffat said she was very concerned that the Zimmer man and Slater subdivisions were hold up in consequence of the restrictions Its too bad re marked Mrs Moffat It was finally agreed to hold another special meeting to dis cuss the zoning bylaw Other Business The deputyreeve said he had been so tied op with other mut ters that he had no report on the land the back of the stores on west In regard to the question of responsibility for the parks and playgrounds he said there should be special meeting of council to consider it He re commended that the old public school be used for the housing of recreation commission playground equipment and this was agreed to In brief fire and water com mittee report Councillor J Murray recommended that an al lowance of weekly be paid to firemen their families who would curry out fulltime alarm duties when the new system came into force The report was op- AURORA Social News Mr and
