Recreation Commission reported in other columns of this issue on a point of press procedure which we regard as of the most vital interest to the public In our understanding of Mr Swindles observations we deduc ed that he suggested reports of meetings but that indi viduals taking part in the discussions should not be named Such ah omission would nullify the fundamen tal importance of whatever was said We have always had a high regard for Mr Swindles forthright and fearless expressions of opinions embraced in what some people regard as overlengthy utterances But if we understood him correctly we certainly cannot go along with him in suggesting censored or clipped reports that might have some emaciated body but no soul at all The names of speakers provide the souls of any press reports and without names reports are as meaningless as anonymous letters The Era and Express will never become the carrier of readymade reports It is an independent newspaper that carries reports from its own independ ent reporters If we make errors we will repair them with corrections But we will not submit to outside dictation in the form of releases prepared for cation We were glad to hear Mr Don Glass and Mr Steadman and others maintain the right of the press to make its own reports A GOOD CHAIRMAN The commendation from Mr Don Glass of the chairmanship of Mr J Dick Buchanan was well- deserved He has proved himself a good chairman in difficult situations when contentious subjects have arisen at the recent Recreation Commission meetings Mr Buchanan has at all times been fair and impartial giving every speaker an equal chance and favoring no one That is good chairmanship The last meeting of the Commission was contentious but it was carried through with good feeling and sports manship Mr waa right when he claimed that such open discussions were good for the Commis sion VETERANS LOTS The idea of providing lots for veterans on payment of a fee of was to do something for men who had served their country but were unable to build a home without assistance Such assistance was in no sense a charity but a form of repayment for services rendered A condition of the grant of a lot was that if a veteran built a home within a period of two years the land was deeded to him A new situation has recently arisen where home owners and former veterans have applied for lots The original of offering lots to veterans just returned from service is thus being defeated It was not the in that exservicemen who became and later sold their properties should compete for land at a fee The whole idea of the original plan was to provide opportunities for veterans without other means to ac quire land at a fee to enable them to build homes It was pointed out at council that this new version of ac quiring veterans lots by homeowners who were selling their properties was a form of real estate business Homeowners selling their properties should not in or dinary fairness be applying for veterans lots BEAUTIFUL HOMES Councillor William Davidson often states a truth in blunt terms At council ho derided the notion that a foot frontage is needed for the building of a beau tiful home Ho said that he knew of many beautiful homes on and foot lots There are special reserves where building is restricted to a foot frontage on an acre of land But in our opinion not all of the homes built on these special reserves are beautiful Some of them look to us repellent and bizarre There are a large of very beautiful homes in Aurora built on small lots The of tenor walk the streets of Aurora the more we are impressed with the beauty of homes and the general layout of the town The town was built up years before planning boards were originated so it is apparent that town is not the new craze some enthusiasts would have us believe or that a board of amateur planners of more steal than adorn is a good substitute for practical common sense ULTIMATUMS A good friend of ours says that ultimatums are bad because they leave no way out While that of course is true it should be borne in mind that the very meaning of an ultimatum is finality in delivered an ultimatum to France and there was war Sometimes an ultimatum can bring peace Somotimes it can allow the grass to grow where seeding has been done Keep Off Is an ultimatum Our friend however was thinking in terms of im mediate human relationships To issue an ultimatum loaves no way out except that of insistence or with drawal Good diplomacy loaves a way out without the need for any humiliating facesaving To suggest wafer and smoother than bald insertions The angry man thumps the table and exclaims got to take it or leave it The diplomatic man Dont you think and would be better He usually get his way RECREATION COMMISSION Playgrounds And The Press Excite Contentious Debate Sparked by a report on the state of the playgrounds from Councillor J Murray some unusually hard hit ting occurred at a meeting of the Recreation Commission held on Thursday evening July 16 In the course of the discussion press reporting received attention Initiating what proved to beof the Commission and the town the major topic of the evening Mr Murray charged that the playgrounds were in bad shape He said that what had appeared in the Banner to the effect that the playgrounds were in good shape was not true He charged that the avenue play ground was In terrible shape The next speaker to voice in dignant criticism of the existing situation was Mr T Swindle who at one point said the con dition of the playgrounds was a damned shame Conditions Described Mr Swindle said the entrance and spent the weekend at Camp where their Ron Bob is holidaying Mr and Mrs Frank have returned from a two week vacation to Lake Mills Wiscon sin injustice Determine Authority Mr Swindle said the council should be asked to call a meet ing of the representatives of the various boards and determine who actually was responsible for keeping the town park and playgrounds in order He asked what part the Parks Board play ed in these matters It was finally agreed to adopt ft Westing council to blocked with the haz- such feting to determine such authority and on a further in avenue play ground with an old wire fence broken down and lying in the grass could rip the hide off the toughest children in town and in the town park there was a lot of broken glass lying around Chairman J E Buchanan said the playgrounds were the re sponsibility of the Commission He wondered however how many masters the recreation di rector had to He should said Mr Buchanan be respon sible to one member only of their body Mr Steadman vicechair man agreed that the play grounds were in poor condition At this point a motion was car ried to the effect that the play grounds committee should be empowered to hire a man if nec essary to help put the in proper shape Press Reports In the course the debate Mr Swindle expressed the view that the press should refrain from mentioning the names of Indi vidual members of the Commis sion taking part In discussion and report only general conclu sions Some members he sug gested were afraid to speak be cause of being or misrepresented At this stage Mr Mundell assistant director took strong I exception to what had been re ported in the Banner about him self He said he had had to take a slam which had got him into trouble with many people Mr and Mr Buchanan dis claimed any intention of criti cising their assistant director who they knew was doing good work Frew Alwe The editor of Aurora News Page on receiving permission to speak charged that If Mr Swindles suggestions were im proved a form of press flhlp would be established and that would be bad Mr Sinclair said that unless ho were free to make his own reports of Com mission meetings for his read ers he only decline to make further reports He would refuse to accept readymade re ports for his paper Mr Don Glass said they Ifo along with the press and wel come it They should not at tempt to restrain the press but leave reporting to ita He described Mr Sinclair be ing too stubborn to change him now Mr said they hod had good support from the press they had no right to ask the press to be present and then try and it Their press relatlona had been good and thoy should leave matters as they were Mr Swindle said he had no intention of suggesting that they curb the which had done a lot for the good of their organization In the course of a lengthy re port Mr R Porrymcnt recre ation director If headlines got Into the paper about been said of the playgrounds the public would not give them Ho said there had been plenty of criticism but not praise for work done He ho got a pat on the adding that ho hated to brag hut he to defend himself e Bold ho had work ed well with Murray year and wondered why the thing thing not hap pening year Ho didnt feel ho bo at meeting Councillor J Murray he had been disappointed with promises made and not kept and waa fed up He he had a solution the chairman want ed to hear It Lets have It rejoined Mr Buchanan well then said Mr Murray take the typewriter away from htm and lock office up and might then get work Mr that what writing did waa ttg question by Mr Swindle on the blocked entrance to the Mills St playground Mr Murray said he would have the entrance cleared Before the meeting closed Mr Steadman said that in spite of criticism it should not be forgot ten that the Commission was do ing a good job He thought the criticism expressed would prove helpful to their work and Mr Glass commended the chairman Mr Buchanan on the able man ner in which he had conducted business especially during the past three meetings during which contentious matters had come up for discussion The Anglican church
