combined rain wind Strawberry patches were hit by the weather Some with fruit ripe for the picking lay there without attention because of the wetness Weather condi tions can change what looked like a bumper crop into a sad failure in only a few days with such perishable crops as straw berries Haying was delayed as well by the rains Many farmers in the district had fields cut They had to watch them browning over because of the unwanted rains The high rainfall of May and June caused a lush growth in the foliage of all plants One could almost watch the trees and shrubs stretching out in new growth The grass continued its constant relentless growth Probably in no season before has there been such a rise in popu larity of power mowers as this year Also in bounteous supply this season are garden Imaginative people could see a monster affair with carnivals rides fireworks wide open stores and even com munity organizations such as the WI and the handcraft group having exhibits and booths on the Main St It could be a communitywide affair with something going on in all the parks some felt One particularly thoughtful Individual suggested that the mayor roll a marble from the top of the Main St of the ProgressiveConservative Party to softpedal the George Drew leadership It is significant said Mr Smith that the Conservative advertising and special literature prepared in many ridings while praising the Conservative party and its policies does not so much as make a single word of men tion of the official party leader Col George Drew This apparent softpedalling of the Drew leadership will not fool the electors said the can didate as leadership is one of the vital issues of the campaign I find among people of all politi cal parties in North York a seri ous reluctance to exchange the
