Elizabeth is now fast fading into history we were pleased to receive from Miss Maude Driver a letter telling of her impressions on her arrival by air to attend the historic occa sion and a number of receptions connected with it Miss Driver vividly describes the excitement and enthusiasm of the English people at the ap proach of Coronation of their Queen and the Queen of Can ada The Canadian Mounted Po lice she states were the centre of attraction among Londoners with many comments on their horses Miss Driver attended the Cor onation rehearsal in Westmin ster Abbey A granddaughter of her friend Lady Jane Vane- TempestStewart was one of the Queens train bearers Of her Majesty Miss Driver wrote She looked beautiful relaxed happy full of loving Let Down Coronation Day in Aurora was merely incidental as a man who has done great service to the town remarked to us Noth ing was done to make it a day to be remembered apart from the service at the high school There was however one bright spot in this gloomy pic ture In the evening of Coron ation Day fireworks were set off at St Andrews college and at the conclusion of this display three loud cheers were given by masters and students for Her Majesty Recreation Commission A meeting of the Recreation Commission was held on Thurs day night June when the fol lowing were present J Bu chanan chairman Stead- man vicechairman Councillor Davidson Jones and Murray and Don Glass Cliff Corbett John Rev George Pur chase Also present were Bell secretarytreasurer and P E recreation direc tor High tribute was paid to St Andrews college for their operation with the commission Mr Don Glass paid tribute to the work of the Youth for Christ movement when reference was made to a renewal of the service in the town park Sunday even ings Councillor J Murray formed the commission that a renewed agreement had been concluded with Mrs Charles Webster for the use of her pro perty at avenue for a playground for the children The chairman complimented Mr Murray for his services in get ting the agreement completed Mr presented reports on the weekly dances and square dance club and Mr Steadman reported that the swimming held at St Andrews col lege had proved a great success The corhrnission passed a vote of thanks to Taylor Electric for providing television recordings of the Coronation at the Lions hall and it was directed that a letter of be sent also to 1 the York Rangers The recrea tion director gave his iwual re port Councillor Murray expressed strong resentment at a report of a discussion at the commission meeting of May which he had not attended owing to a special meeting of council on the same evening The report had appear ed in the Banner and he refused to be kicked around by it said Mr Murray The discussion had centred around the question of the allot ment of time in the town park for various sports and also the question of whether the town council or the Field Athletic board of which Mr Murray is chairman had authority over the In last weeks issue of the Au rora Banner a very mean charge was made against Councillor J Murray in a report dealing with his exposure of a letter that had been sent to the editor of the Sutton Reporter on the in structions of the mayor without either the knowledge or consent of council The letter apparent ly indicated that legal proceed ings against the Sutton Reporter were under consideration in cer tain circumstances In the second paragraph of the Banner report concerning Mr Murray the following words ap pear The councillor bided his time for asking the question un til Mayor Crawford Rose had left the council chamber on a professional engagement and had left Deputy Reeve James Murray in the chair Actually these words repre sent not only a mean but an un truthful version of the circum stances concerned for Mr Mur ray could only ask his question on the mayors letter when the New Business of councils agenda had been reached The mayor had been absent from council for about an hour and a half before New Business was reached Bound by rules of pro cedure Councillor Murray asked his question when the rules per mitted him to do so A Public Service The suggestion contained in the Banner comment in its re port is that Mr Murray would not have asked the question if the mayor had been present To this we have to say that if a few more members of council had what the mayor calls guts to the extent that Councillor D- J Murray has on many occasions demonstrated it would be a bet ter as it would be a more inde pendent council Councillor Murray has shown that he is in fear of no one In disclosing his knowledge of the existence of the suggestion of possible legal action against the Sutton Reporter he was do ing a public service to the citi zens of Aurora It was open to the mayor to have told council on Monday night June l that he had sent the letter He was in the chair for a couple of hours But he left the meeting without saying on word about the letter Does this reticence suggest that he wished to keep it secret from council After Councillor Murray had brought it to light the mayor gave a statement to the Banner in which he admitted that he had discussed it with Mr Ross Linton If the mayor found it necessary to discuss the matter with Mr Linton surely he could have condescended to have in formed his council while it was in session on the steps he had taken without their knowledge or consent He did not do so Banner Should Retract It would appear that a retrac tion is due from the Banner to Mr Murray with regard to its charge that he bided his time for asking the question until Mayor Crawford Rose had left the council chamber Such a comment incorporated into what is offered as a news re port is a plain and serious re flection on Mr Murrays probity suggesting that if the mayor not left the council chamber the question would not have been asked To Visit Inn The Aurora Junior choir un der the of Mr tyd Harris will be presenting a Twilight Recital at the National convention of the Junior Cham bers of Commerce which con venes at the Inn The recital will be given on Sunday night June at 8 pm A i Mr Murray said then was no problem at an Ha pointed out that the town council and the Board ha represented could together amicably an opinion that was corroborated by Jon Councillor Social News Congratulations are extended to Charles Marston son of Mr and Mrs Marston Cather ine Ave on having passed his first year exams in Civil Engin eering at the University of To ronto Mrs Roddick King has been elected president of the Centre York District Womens Institute She succeeds Mrs Baycroft who has been presi dent for three years The dist rict meeting took place in Presbyterian church Mr and Mrs Corden and family and Dr and Mrs Toronto were weekend guests of Mr and Mrs Jim Marshall Mr and Mrs Albert Collins and family motored to nils on Sunday Mr Murray Oliver son of Mr and Mrs Oliver Is leaving on Friday for Europe Miss Vara Clarke graduated on Monday from the Unhrtratty of DOAN HALL PAGE THURSDAY THE ELEVENTH DAY OF JUNE NINETEEN HUNDRED AND FIFTY- THREE a j EDITORIAL THE HORSE SHOW What has been correctly claimed as North Yorks biggest annual event the Horse Show held under the auspices of the Aurora Agricultural Society will again take place in the town park Aurora on Saturday June 13 This will be the year of the show Last year was a record both financially and for a variety of feat ures This year new features will be introduced that should fine weather permitting establish another rec ord We are pleased to draw the attention of our thous ands of readers to the fine support given by so many of our leading merchants and storekeepers to the Horse Show in sponsoring a full Aurora News Page These wellknown Aurora business houses gladly renewed their former support of the Horse Show through our news paper We wish the show on Saturday every success THE BLUNDER PROVED Last week we said it was a blunder not to have held the Coronation service at the United church Events proved our opinion The highest estimate we have heard of the attendance at the high school auditorium was around 200 persons On such a day and for such an occasion this small number was most regrettable The distance for people to walk who did not own cars was too far That is one consideration Another is the inevitable lack of religious atmosphere in a build ing not used or adapted for such a purpose The acous tics in the auditorium were not conditioned for the pur pose for which they were used on Coronation Day It is to be hoped that the lesson of the blunder will be remembered It is more ardently hoped that a few decades will pass before another Coronation service will need to be held A queen of incomparable qualities and qualifications was crowned on June 2 But apart from the poorlyattended religious service and the skeleton parade that preceded it no celebrations were put on in Aurora to remember it by Owing to lack of plans made for them the citizens of Aurora had no jus tification for taking pride in their town on Coronation Day CONTROL NOT REMOVED Although for financial reasons the contract with the North York Humane Society for dog control was terminated the yearround control of dogs under the recentlypassed bylaw has not been removed The by law enforces the leashing of dogs not in the care of their owners or other guardians It is understood that arrangements will be entered into with the local police for the control of dogs under the enabling bylaw A great improvement has recently taken place in regard to wandering dogs It is hoped that this will be maintained and the work of the police kept down to a minimum Meanwhile as stated the yearround bylaw is still effective SOME QUESTIONS By writing a letter to the mayor asking for a resolution from the town council to officially designate what is called the broiler festival managing director J Picking has exposed the organization he represents to a few questions Why for example should the town of Aurora be asked to give its official blessing to what appears to be a purely commercial enterprize On such a premise all businesses are entitled to official A service club we understand was informed that the revenue from the sale of the first tickets would be set aside for expenses the revenue from the sale of the next two or three thousand tickets would be put aside us a fund for next years festival and the revenue from the subsequent sale of tickets would be shared among the service clubs If this is so who will benefit most the chicken mer chants or the service clubs We cannot see that the storekeepers will benefit They are likely to lose if there is an exodus of customers from Main street to the chicken at 1B0 a plate Somewhere the festival seems to smell a bit And we dont mean chicken smell Toronto Vera has been taking a in for the past two years Her mother A Clarke and Joe attended the graduation Mr Copland attended the Hydro convention at Bigwin Inn last week Women MUiianary So ciety of the Presbyterian church held its June meeting at home of Mr Frank Dove Ken nedy St on Wednesday af ternoon Miss Lois Ann If cele brated her ninth birthday at bar on Tuesday ladles Afternoon A of the United church held their June meeting in the form of a luncheon on Thursday Mrs president of Centre Presbytery was the guest The beautiful bouquet of flowers placed in th sanctuary of tha United church on Sunday rooming in memory of tha late P Thompson We art pleased to hear that Miss June progress ing favorably after having flergonc an emergency in Josephs Toronto class of COUNCIL SIDELIGHTS Enough Mayor Tells His Council to Vote Lifts Lid Off Letter The regular meeting of council heard some sharp words and like the famous symphony of Haydn one surprise Our temperamental mayor suddenly let himself go again to bring upon himself a rebuke from a member of council Around 1015 pm the mayor withdrew from council for the undoubted reason that babies are still being born One such needed his ser vices All members were present ex cept Reeve Cook It was during the correspondence stage of busi ness that the mayor let his hair down and called on members of council to show that they had guts We felt somewhat em barrassed by the appeal of the mayor for council to prove its guts while a lady councillor sat opposite to him at the other end of the table It all happened as a result of a letter sent to the mayor by promoter Picking on behalf of the broiler festival of which it emerged that he is managing director Managing director Pick ing requested that council would by resolution designate official ly a broiler festival day for the municipality His letter indicated that he was not asking for such a day to be declared a holiday which it was remarked was kind of him Broiler Boils Over With suitable eloquence the mayor recommended the sugges tion made by managing director Picking In his enthusiasm he forecast that in five years time Aurora would look back with pride on the broiler festival He waved managing director Pickings letter in front of him self recommending its contents to council Murray expressed the wish that the Banner would on this occasion make the retraction in a gentle manly manner Mr Back Again Mr Seston president of the board of trade was back again to council with a lengthy brief on the need for the setting up of what was described as an indus trial commission directed to wards the locating of new indus tries in town Considerable time was taken up on what seemed to us a further building of castles in the air having regard to the situation as it exists in Aurora today Mr however appeared to be pleased with his further ad dress to council The mayor thanked him for his attendance at council and Mr recip rocated in turn Possible Lawsuit The mayor having left council to attend to professional de mands the chair was occupied by Deputyreeve Murray in the absence of Reeve Cook It was at the new business stage of the session when Councillor J rose to ask members of council if they were aware that they might soon have a lawsuit on their hands It was apparent that members Councillor D J Murray rose of council were startled by this and informed the mayor that he was opposed to the recommenda tion and would not vote for it He said the broiler festival was a commercial proposition and as such council was not called on to officially endorse it Councillor William Davidson also opposed He said the fes tival was not one of national importance and he did not think it was a matter that concerned the council We surmized a tinge of sarcasm in the reference to national importance It was at this point of resist ance that the mayor again blew his top by exclaiming that he hoped council would have enough guts to pass the resolu tion This brought forth a sharp retort from Mr Murray to the effect that he resented the mayors remark and that he did not lack guts Then Deputyreeve Murray said the discussion was damned small potatoes Following this the mayor called for a vote With only Mr Murray and Mr David son in opposition managing dir ector Picking got the OK for his request Honorary Chairman It appears from the broiler festival that manag ing director Picking has got the mayor where apparently he wants him namely at the top of the page where he is desig nated as Hon Chairman Among other names are those of Lome Cousins and brother Ar chie and Ray Marshall and of course managing director P J Picking Was It Dignified Presumably the mayor would have been happy had there been a unanimous vote endorsing man aging director Pickings request But when opposition took the place of unanimity the mayor called on members of council to show guts The use of such an expression shows a lamentable lack of mayoral dignity and to say the least is not an inspiring or courteous disposition towards fellowcouncillors We were rather surprised that Councillor Murrays resentment was not supported by other mem bers of council who had to take it Crack a Dawn On Banner Mr a letter to council in connection with the dispute over the onefoot reser vation issue which it had been maintained was not in the original draft plan The letter was couched in amenable terms which were commended by coun cil and it appears that a satis factory conclusion or will be reached Councillor Murray that the Banner had in report of the words to him which he had not and for a retraction In doing to Mr question Mr Murray explained that he had knowledge that the town solicitor had sent a letter to the editor of the Sutton Repor ter informing him that unless a retraction were made of a state ment which that paper had pub lished in regard to the old pub lic school an action would be considered The paper had re ferred to the old school as having been condemned in comment ing on the county seat competi tion When questions were asked on whose authority the town solici tor had acted a telephone enquiry was put through to Mr Lee The town clerk who made the tele phone enquiry from Mr Lee advised council that the town solicitor stated that the letter been sent on the instructions of the mayor Was It In Order While we reserve an opinion on the Tightness or of the Sutton Reporters use of the word condemned having re gard to the circumstances in which the public school board found reasons for abandoning the old school for new premises and the expressions of opinion voked by the public school board chair man at his original and subse quent appearances before coun cil for a grant of later increased to we question the mayors right to pursue a course of action that could pos sibly result in a lawsuit on behalf of the town without obtaining as a condition precedent the con currence of members of council over whom he presides The letter to the Sutton Report- er was sent on the mayors in structions so the town solicitor informed council through the town clerk Mr Lee sent no in formation to council through the town clerk that he either agreed or disagreed with the instructions he had received He merely re ported that he had sent the let ter on the mayors instructions In the circumstances as des cribed to council the question arises as to what extent the may or of the town may act without the knowledge or approval of the council over whom he presides At this writing we have no know ledge of whether the Sutton Re porter will accede to or ignore the reported demand of the may or for a retraction of the state ment to which exception has been taken If and when a law suit were to be instigated by the town it would require the concurrence of council to the extent of at least a majority of its members If the mayor did in fact in the let ter sent on his personal instruc tions to the Sutton Reporter threaten legal action in certain in that event he assumed an authority that had not been invested in him by a vote of council More no doubt will be heard of the circumstan ces of the letter Sardines herring and cod are among the most important pro ducts of New Brunswick fish eries
