think in the interest of all concerned that this matter should be brought to your attention In paragraph three you men tion Councillor said that he was forced to resign be cause reports of committees were not requested by the mayor However if you will recall my statement was to the effect that important reports were not being presented by the chairman of committees in which I was in volved It was likely the last ses sion before a general election which Is expected to be called sometime before the snow flies The world situation is still in a troubled state and there are some danger Richmond Hill and the telephone Is The Prime Minister and delegation are preparing to go overseas for the Coronation and plan to return to Canada in early June Canada will occupy an important place in the Coron ation proceedings and our offic ial delegation as well as our de tachments of Army Navy Air- Force and Royal Canadian Mounted Police will I am sure make a favorable impression in London and in every way he a credit to Canada For example I am sure it will be a source of pride to all Cana dians that when on June off England one of hist orys greatest assemblages of ships sail past Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth in the tradit ional Coronation Review of the Fleet Canada will he well rep resented Proudly taking their stations in this array will be six ships of the Royal Canadian Navy a crosssection of Canadas rela tively small but expanding sea forces Canadas Coronation squadron will be headed by the aircraft carrier Magnificent The cruis ers Ontario and Quebec will be en hand The destroyer Sioux tested in the Korean war will be there The frigates Swansea and La will represent Canadas World War naval construction effort that helped turn the tide In the Battle of the Atlantic Our countrys peacetime skills will be on view too in the De partment of Transports new ice breaker designed and built in Canada and which in time of war could be used for defence purposes Canadas contingent may not loom large numerically in the armada of 200 ships But it will serve as a reminder that as our country moves up the scale of world powers she takes her place beside Britain and other freedomloving countries whose naval forces stand as a harrier against world enslavement History was made in the clos ing days of the session when the Prime Minister announced the appointment of Opposition Lead er George Drew as a member of the Privy Council of Canada This is the first time in history an appointment has been made and is was applauded as a gracious act members in all foci Ions of the House Speakers of the House of Commons and the Senate similarly honored along with the Opposition Lead er will be members of Canadas official delegation to the Corona tion The Seaway The government is losing any time or sparing any effort In pushing the St Lawrence sea way development This great project which will mean so much to the future development Canada and to the power supply of industrial Ontario lias top priority here and there Is real optimism that despite red tape and tardy cooperation from the that work will start on the big development this fall Prime Minister St Laurent and all members of the government are giving it full and all out port British Markets Canadian goods continue to roll heavily In the British mark et although in recent years there have been changes in the kind of goods sold Last year Canada was the biggest supplier Britain had in the world Britain took Can adian goods to the value of million according to British fig That meant Canadian exports increased per cent over and set a new peacetime record The United States was Britains second largest supplier and Australia came In third place Canadian shipments amount to per cent of all Britains Im ports compared to eight per cent in Commenting on the situation the magazine Foreign Trade says Obviously Canada Is re taining her hold on this market taxpayers Reasonable and thinking people appreciate that it Is not sensible to criticize the adminis tration for the present level of taxation and in the next breath suggest Increasing expenditures by many millions of dollars In this session the government has listened to the opposition make suggestions which if adopted would have increased expenditures by some billion Your governments policy has been to extend social services in keeping with the economy of our country We have ever kept in mind and endeavored to strike a fair balance between the needs of the people and the ability of the people to bear the resulting levy of taxation Sometimes op position members in an effort to make appeals to sections or groups seem to forget that the governments only source of rev enue Is taxation May 30 On Saturday May York County in Emmanuel church King on June and at St An drews Presbyterian church on June 21 Work on the site of King Citys first industrial plant com mences this week Stanley Wat sons potato chip factory which will be located on the west side of Keele St south near the railway track will be built by William and Son King City The lot measures by 218 feet and will provide ample space for the one storey building which will house the Salvo au tomatic machinery worth more than It is the most modern machinery of its kind that can be found and will be the most efficient of any in Toronto and equal to any in operation in the United States Its capacity is approximately lbs of fried potatoes per hour This is pack aged automatically in the plant and ready for the market Mr Watson hopes to have the building at a sufficiently ad vanced stage to bring the new machinery from the United States by July It has been ready for shipment for some time The capacity of the ma chinery will determine the num ber of employees In compari son to his Toronto plant there will be a vast difference There 300 pounds of potatoes can be peeled and cooked in an hour The building itself will be equal in appearance to the fin est dwelling in the neighborhood The property will be landscaped in time and everything will be done to make it a credit to the community and an industry that will employ local people states Mr Watson John the late Charles and Stan ley started the potato chip busi ness in it was on a very small scale Stanley had been delivering potatoes from the home farm on the King and Vaughan and saw an opportunity to experiment hi the business They rented a build and the only equipment they had was one potato pot measur ing inches across and about four feet deep It was heated over a gas lamp They changed to two oil lamps which cost to operate If they sold half a dozen packages of chips a day they were doing well When they received an order for a four pound carton it was good business Finally Mr Watson bought a building at a good price and in he renovated it at a cost of 23000 From then on business expanded rapidly The brothers went out of partnership and Stanley took over himself sev eral years ago He believes In happy relations between em ployer and employees if you cant live like a family you might as well give up he de clares LAST MEETING live and grading services and to all of us as consumers of agricul tural products All farmers therefore are ask ed to cooperate in making this survey as complete and accurate as possible It is in the farmers interest to assist in providing these assessments on Canadian production for national and in ternational use Although it is presently a branch of the Toronto plant in time it will he the major factory It will be much larger than the parent plant and will allow for expansion to the west side Mr Watsons reason for constructing a second factory is because de mands cannot be met by pro duction the Toronto plant Last year the turnover in potato chips was over 55000 and he is not able to handle any expansion in trade His employees arc forced to work overtime at peak seasons and there is no means of enlarging his building there When the Watson Brothers i The last meeting of the seas of the Evening branch Pauls Anglican market will May 25 The group packed bale for the Indian school at Its last meeting and prepared shipment of good
