i Originality must be the middle for many local youngsters t of suitable Me iers Day gifts there were some who stuck to such old reliables as flowers cosmetics or lingerie- tut many didnt- One Newmarket mother a bag of firecrackers sparklers flares and even a We can almost hear her tying as she thanked her young how did you ever of firecrackers They are just what need That originality was lacking in two recent public addresses we heard In his introduction a visitor to the district began his remarks by saying he wasnt an expert but only an ordinary Joe An expert is someone who is more than 50 miles away from home he explained The fol lowing week we heard someone another out of town guest speaker use the same joke in his introduction It wasnt quite so funny Dales Conies On Short As Turtle Steals His Catch Local Observer operating I within the confines of the home community certainly fails to qualify as an expert according to the above definition But it doesnt take an expert to realize that the back streets town now being used as detour routes during the relaying of Main St need some attention The towns workmen have a I big job on their hands with the Main St work But the other streets in shouldnt be neg lected particularly this year when many will carry much heavier traffic Perhaps this might be an op portune time to suggest the oil ing of the roads in the community It is a further irritation to taxpayers to have clouds of dust blowing with each passing car While the children are in school it would seem to be a logical time to do the job for fresh tar has strange powers and draws little boys and girls like pins to a magnet When Edgar Bergen and his pal Charlie were in Toronto last week several Newmarket residents had an opportunity to meet him fie was the guest artist at the annual banquet of the Drug Trading company which held at the Royal York hotel Toronto on Wednes day May Some of the local druggists and their wives attended the banquet and brought back glow- accounts of Mr Bergens tal ents and personality Some of the druggists children are treas uring Edgars autograph this week as their prize exhibit This next item could be en titled Count ten first or Further problems of Main St One day this week we watched a Newmarket man park his car under a No Parking sign on Park Ave and directly in front of a hydrant A congested sec tion at most times the Main and Park Sts intersection is busier now with the handling of the detour traffic Leaving his car within feet of the busy corner the driver went into the post office and then did some shopping before he leisurely sauntered back to his car The following day a Main St merchant about to drive his car from his garage found a trench had been dug on Main St oppo site the entrance to the drive Well over a halfhour was re quired for the crew of town workmen to construct a tempor ary bridge so that he could drive the car from the lane Work has been progressing steadily along Main St in the modernizing of the services the laying of the new road bed This merchant failed to realize that the work breached his premise or haps he didnt know he would need his car before theyd be finished These are only two isolated stances but they are five of the extra work and which can and is being I caused on the project because of lack of foresight It is an inconvenience to shop pers to have to park away from Main St Their is slight however in with that caused the One of the strangest fish stories In many seasons was reported by a well known fisherman this week The story involves two promin ent fishermen J Dales and J Watson who claim there is a speckled trout thief between Newmarket and Mount Albert JLast weekend Watson ask ed Dales to accompany him for a few hours of speckled trout fishing east of New market At first Dales re fused and declared that he knew where to catch his own fish alone but finally con sented A speckled trout fisherman never discloses the source of his bounty but somewhere east of town the two caught three speckles in an unknown East stream They decided to try another stream on another concession road and to keep their catch fresh they removed the gills strung the trout on a wire and tied them to a branch under the surface of the cool stream water while they made the side trip No matter what catch now you can have those GUERNSEY COW AT CROSSLANDS HIGH casters re turned to the spot for their first catch Unfortunately all that remained on the end of he wire was the head of one fish Watson returned with his two and Dales returned with his head Fisherman Dales still ponders about the incident Why didnt the snapping turtle or the eat everything asks Fisherman Dales And we thought we were the only fishermen out that day Who says a turtle hasnt turned down a suggestion by the newly formed Chamber of Com merce to alleviate the parking problem in municipal parking lots Monday night Last week the Chamber was asked by the council parking committee to give its opinion on Chief Constable Byron recommendation The chief had suggested that all parking meters be moved tem porarily from Main St to the parking lots and that a charge of one cent an hour be made on the meters In this way the police hoped that allday parking would be prevented in the parking lots and as many motorists as pos sible would ho able to find a place to park in the crowded business section Council decid ed to move the meters into the j municipal parking on signs at parking lots hut to maintain the Eagle St and at Water St Mo lt did not follow the chiefs sug gestion to purchase additional meters so that every space in the three parking lots would have a meter Chief had said in his report that some meters should be left in the parking lots in after the reconstruction of Main St was completed and that revenue from them would pay for the original cost Special Meeting Since council has turned down the Chamber of Commerce sug gestion a meeting has been called for all Chamber members next week The chief constable has been asked to attend and speak on the parking problem in Newmarket Councillor Charles VanZant was opposed to putting meters in the appeared at the Monday night meeting that would authorize an annual subsidy up to Council may decide at its next meeting a week from next Monday In the bus line lost on its operation five cents per hour charge who come to Newmarket The executive of the Chamber to shop have been pleased to see of Commerce decided that it that we offer them free parking would be cheaper to enforce a twohour parking limit without using meters and suggested that a further survey to find the general opinion of merchants be made Meter Parking Lots At the Monday meeting the chief constable said that it would Now they are going to drive to the parking lots and find they must put money in meters I dont think it i a good thing he said Councillor VanZant pointed out that the Ontario Municipal Act prohibits municipally owned free parking lots He said that be impossible to enforce two- the act states that where public hour parking in the townowned funds are used to improve without hiring an extra man full time Council decided to hold to its original decision to move the meters into the lots and charge the five cent rate imp parking lots the munici pality must obtain revenue from them In spite of this fact he said he thought there should be no charge for parking A special committee headed by DeputyReeve Herbert Glad- man has been investigating the financial condition with the au ditor of the Newmarket Bus Lines The ownermanager Lar ry Needier recently requested the town to subsidize the town bus route which has been oper ating at a loss The subsidy would be made for one year from June 1 to May 31 Mayor Vale said that he was under the Im pression that the management is asking the town to make up the loss up to a maximum of Mr Gladman said that he understood that the manage ment was asking for a flat sub sidy of the full amount The bus line has been operat ing in Newmarket for live years and serves outlying subdivisions Said Unfortunately Newmarket needs a bus line in a geographic sense but in a population sense it doesnt Because the town is spread out there are long dis tances for housewives to walk to the shopping district and for workers to their place of employ ment Council spent considerable time discussing the subject coun cillor Eddie said The Newmarket Bus Lines recently bought a new bus Its maintenance costs may well go down but the depreciation costs will go up A bus service is an inducement for a prospective in dustry to locate here and en courages the development of out lying districts DeputyReeve Gladman said that if the town approved of the subsidy a company would be set with a board of five directors two appointed by the town council two by the owner and one other appointment would be made by some other body Councillor said that the bus service is important to the growth of Newmarket If I were going to build on the out skirts of town the first thing I would look for would be sewer and water services would look for transportation Main St re quires not only dozens of busy workmen but all types of mach inery which will beyond a doubt be of great interest to children Regardless of their interest the children must be made to realize that there is a hazard on the street The men working on the pro ject have tasks which require their full attention Children running around the street only produce nervous tension and they
